  1. We pay during the school year and contribute in the summer months. Dd does a lot of driving her siblings around and her having a vehicle often saves me driving her to town, dropping her off and driving back in to get her. So long as her grades are high, she is dedicated in her athletics and not in trouble we pay. We do not allow her to work during the school year, so when summer hits we do have her contribute to the gas tank.

  2. My dd has asked me to find her some thorough online courses this summer to prep her for AP English 11 and something else for Govt/politics AP. We just got her PSAT scores back and although she did just fine, she does not feel this years Honors english has challenged her enough to be successful next year.

She knows she can work through Khan academy, but wants more structure. Everything I am finding is more semester or year in length. Any ideas? Thanks! Simka.

  4. okay this is my favorite post in this thread so far.  Now you are giving me IDEAS, :(

I have already raised chickens and plan to try quail this year.  How much harder are rabbits?

Bunnies are a blast. You have to watch the heat a bit, but frozen 2 liters and good grooming habit go along ways. There are quite a few angora clubs down your way. :)

  5. More farming than crafting, but this year I am working with a group of angora rabbit breeders to increase the micron count of our herds. We have to send in samples to a lab 4 times a years and see how big a difference we can make in a year.

Beyond that I am doing a lot of spinning and dyeing of my own 100% angora.

I taught myself tunisian crochet a few days ago and love it! I have tried to knit so many times and just can't do it well. Tunisian crochet gives me the look, but in a way in can handle. :)

  6. Angie, I have done the same thing!  And I'm EO and use EOs.  Sigh.

    :0)

When I worked at a software company, it seemed like all we did was talk in acronyms.  It got so bad that I couldn't read license plates without trying to figure out what the "acronym" was for.  :0)

Back to your regularly scheduled programming...

January, I am no help at all.  We never did keep a good schedule, but we did say morning prayers in the car when we took our son to school, and our family said evening prayers together in my son's room right before we tucked him in.

Hey, I appreciate knowing that. :)

  7. I did not leave Christianity, but I did leave the "Protestant Church" (in quotes because someone always wants to debate what I actually mean, just take it in its broadest sense) for some, but not all, of the reasons you mention. I was just reading an article a few moments ago where one of our Priests mentions exactly what you did....becoming more judgmental. Here is the article http://www.pravmir.com/which-came-first-the-church-or-the-new-testament/

With that I will let this go back to others. :)

  8. I wanted to ask this here in case we have any newbies or lurkers who have not made it to the sub group. ;)

I was curious what everyone daily schedules look like (or looked like) with kids in the home? I know this is uber domestic, but I love seeing what others are doing. Heck, i would love to see what you hope to be doing! ;)

What time to do you get up? Prayers? Alone? With kids? Things of that nature.

Mornings and evenings are my primary focus right now.

Fall is coming (here it seems like we have not gotten summer) and is when I love to tweak these things. :)

  9. Just wanted to give this a little bump in case there are new opinions. I will be honest, the authors alone have me feeling anxious. Is the religious theory stuff as bad as I have heard?

Ugh, i want something that works and has a decent support base. Pretty pictures on pinterest are a plus.....and how I got lured in in the first place. :)

  10. I have a question for us in general. :) it is my understanding that we primarily use the Septuagint as our "Old Testament." Can someone explain the why of that or provide a link? Also, should we use other versions of the OT? If we do, how do we handle verses that are in those other versions, but are not in the Septuagint?

  11. Kabbalah is the 'hidden' part of the Oral Torah. The word itself comes from the shoresh meaning 'to accept'.

The actual study of Kabbalah is reserved those who have spent their lives immersed in the study of Torah and Halacha, and Gemara, who are over 40, and who are accepted by a mentor/teacher who is an expert in this topic.

There are references to Kabbalah and Kabbalistic insights in the Gemara and in many traditional commentaries and in discussions of minhagim (customs), some of which have their roots in kabbalistic ideas, some parts of Tanakh are allusions to kabbalistic concepts, and there are now written texts (Sefer Yetzirah is, I believe the oldest - from the 2nd century CE), the Zohar was published in the 13th century, as I recall.), but they are more like notes that only one who understands the topic very, very well can properly understand. ...and without that understanding they can be not only confusing by very misleading.

The Zohar, as I understand it from sources referencing it has Torah commentary/explanation & explanation/discussion of cosmological issues.

I have read that it is primarily men who study the Gemara. What is the reasoning behind this? Are there exceptions made? :)

  12. Why cant you control what he does at school? I packed yummy gluten-free/dairy-free meals for my kids, including treats, and always brought in alternative treats for when there were parties.

I loved this website's 'how to start' section, tho I didnt end up liking her recipes

This was the first book I got, and it helped me a lot. She also has a bread-machine version, but I was able to convert her sandwich bread for my bread machine pretty easily.

I spent a fair amount of time on the celiac.com message boards - they are open to anyone trying to eat gluten free.

And honestly, you can google to find gluten free recipes for anything you could want. Its become very common.

Our favorite store-bought bread is Udis.

I could have phrased that better. The child I had in mind is very sensitive to being perceived as different. He will eat what I pack, but I seriously doubt he would refuse anything offered by someone else. This child will throw away his meds if I don't watch and fully acknowledge his day goes better when he takes them. When asked, all he can tell us is that he just does not want to take meds. :( his doctor had a long talk with him and he understands why he on them, but in the AM before they kick in I still am faced with a defiant, sullen, obstinate 12 yr old whom I love. I want to give this a try and see if it helps us during these times.

We have other reason to suspect some intolerance/inflammation issues. At 12 he and his twin are still in the 0% for weight and barely on for height. There also seems to be quite a bit of gastro distress when he eats things like waffles and bread. Recently I noticed his older sister (ADHD as well) has refused to eat pasta and most breads. She is a runner so I tried to force her for awhile, but you can only force so much and I am choosing to listen to what their bodies are telling them. The other twin is a good eater, but still extremely under weight and suffers extreme constipation issues.

All in all, I am just trying to see if this helps a bit. Whatever tools I can give them in life is a plus in my book ;)

  13. Cookbooks? How to's? Things like that.

Ds is doing well on his new meds for adhd, but I can definitely see some other issues going on. We discussed things with his Dr and based on family history/symptoms feel this is the next step.

I am totally intimidated at trying to switch to this kind of lifestyle when the kids are this old. :( Also, I am realistic that I cannot control him at school.

I think I had to get to point where both dh and I were ready and willing to take the plunge.

    TIA!
