  1. I've been looking at the curriculum online and I actually think I really might use this next year! I love the fact that it tells me exactly what lessons to review if they get answers wrong! Can I ask how many years you've used this and from what ages?
  2. We have done CC for 3 years now. If memorizing facts seems against your homeschool philosophy, then foundations would not be a good fit. We enjoy CC and I have found the memorization of facts to be helpful as they get older. Foundations can be a full curriculum on its own. You need a phonics program for young children complete math program to add. There are a lot of resources on the web to "fill" out the program too in terms of math and science activities. Remember that with a co-op you will be gone for an entire morning too, so you have to take that into account in planning your week. :)
  3. Moderate parent involvement would be tolerable if I could cover it in 3 days a week, looking at the website. I actually haven't heard of this before. Thanks!
  4. We are on the hunt for new math curriculum again. I was using CTC, but I've found that with one computer we just can't do four kids in online math. I need to go back to a textbook curriculum and I need suggestions. I would prefer something that is low parent involvement, easy to grade and possibly something that lends itself to 3-4 lessons a week. I will be homeschooling a 9th grader (may need to review algebra again), an 8th grader(possibly a pre-algebra) a 6th grader and a 2nd grader. I am willing to consider different curriculum for each child and would consider christian or secular, though a secular curriculum might be nice because we may do charter school and they would pay for it. Thanks for any advice!
  5. We have just started using this curriculum. I have all my kids using it because with my work schedule I just didn't have time to grade math myself from a traditional math program. My kids loved teaching textbooks, but this was more affordable. After using it only a few weeks, I do know that I will have to add in more supplements for my 6 yo so that he can write the numbers. Also it is sometimes hard for him to count larger numbers like 16, 20 because I don't like him touching the computer screen. My husband is logged in also and was going to go through the lessons starting in 7th grade to see how it works so we can get a feel for the higher math lessons before our girls get there. All in all we like it the first few weeks and my kids never complain about doing math, which was not the case before!
  6. I would love the girls to do Latin and have had trouble getting started, mostly because I feel inadequate to teach it and I would love to learn myself, but right now I'm having to educate myself about things at work. My husband is also in the same boat, would like to learn Latin, but also has his own assignments. Did you like site better than the others? Cost value? How much time did you spend grading, helping to understand assignments and such?
  7. I am interested in hearing suggestions for online classes for 7th and 8th graders. We have been doing Classical Conversations, but we have moved to a community that just started this year and most likely won't be offering Challenge classes A or B next year and I'm needing guidance for my junior high girls. I've read a few things about these classes and would like to hear feedback from those who have used them. Both my daughters love to read and my older child (in 8th grade next year) is very good an independent work and very responsible when the expectations are clear and above grade level in Language arts and at grade level in math. My younger daughter is a dreamer who loves animals and reading, also above grade level in reading and slightly below level in math, but less independent. My husband is in school and at home during the day, doing classes online, and I work nights as a nurse 3 days a week. Which of these classes would work well with our situation? I really desire a classical education for our girls but I'm having trouble being organized enough to make it happen and believe that we need to outsource some things. My husband and I have a lot of time to work with the kids, but not necessarily all during traditional school hours. Thank you in advance for any advice and insights.
  8. Hi, we are new to homeschooling and new to Portland. Excited about getting started!
  9. We are moving to another state, pulling the kids out of school and starting to homeschool with 3 kids. They have been using Saxon in their Charter school and all seem to be doing well, except I'm worried about DS. We put him on school early.. He is now 7.5 finishing 2nd grade and Saxon 3, the school starts Saxon 1 after first 2 months of kinder. My DS is very active and has difficulty concentrating. I'm afraid that Saxon 5/4 will be way too much for him, especially copying problems... I saw they have intermediate 3, so I could try that. Math is not difficult for him mind you, he just doesn't sit well, and has trouble with copying, writing. Need some ideas for an average Math student with concentration/ sitting issues :)
