  1. Not to sound nasty, but in this economy I wouldn't expect what the realtor told you. Why they tell people these things I have no idea.

My sister put hers on the market in Jan and has only had 3 showings so far and it's June. And her price is at rock bottom. She's hoping to break even!

This is a really tough market in many places. People are hoping for a steal so you'll get calls asking prices and no one comes. Doesn't mean your house won't sell, but I believe the average wait now is 8 months!

Best wishes and hope yours isn't that long of a wait!

    Kim

After 3 months of grueling and expensive work to our house, we finally got it on the market early yesterday morning. Our realtor said that we'll be notified of showings by phone through a listing service, and said yesterday that we should "expect to be getting phone calls any time now." She said the first few days or couple of weeks would likely be high traffic. That was yesterday morning. It's been a day and a half. Not one call to schedule a showing. Am I prematurely discouraged? I've never sold a house. I know the market's not great right now, but I thought that when new homes pop up on the MLS or realtor.com that folks are usually clamoring to take a peek. What's your experience?
  2. She's very good for her age and never even liked coloring books--rather draw her own pics and color them as a little kid. She definitely marches to the beat of her own drum when it comes to art.

However, she'd also watch veggie tales and use the drawing programs included...so I was hoping to do a video/dvd program but they're incredibly expensive, IMHO.

    Kim

Depends on your kid. Mine is extremely artistic and doesn't want to be told what to do. She goes to watercolour classes but other than that, is self taught. I tried AP twice- including the Junior High- and she just rebelled.

I do think its a good program, and I wanted it to work for us, but after trying twice, don't think I will try again.

  3. Hi all,

I'm thinking of doing an art class on the side for my budding artist. I think she'd prefer watching a DVD for instruction.

Any ideas? I want one that covers landscape, people, animals, etc.

Please, not just shading, lines, etc which she finds quite boring. She had a class on this before and because the class moved at a snails pace (the instructor's pace) she was really bored with it. With a DVD, I'm hoping that she can learn techniques and move on quickly through the dry parts.

    Kim

PS: Forgot to add--she's a pretty good little artist and would make a great cartoonist someday. Even one that gets into cartooning would be great, too.

  4. I'd save it for HS. You'll need it for Science equipment or college classes, IMHO.

Forget the glitz. I have a nice school room and the kid hangs out on the family room couch, instead. Books are all over the house, etc.

The school room has ended up a storage room, basically. She couldn't care less about it.

But then, when you think about it....why mimick a school classroom, anyway? Why in the world are we homeschooling for if it ends up not feelling like home?

    Kim

    Purely hypothetical, of course :D

Already has a white board ("large") and a "world rug" for the floor. Located in the basement (I think it's a walk-out).

  5. Great example.

I remember how frustrating it was too be living in suburbia, and looking at rural real estate listings.

Our old house was bought by the county, so that meant years of red tape, waiting for everything to be approved. I knew that I was not going to be able to find the right house on short notice, and we kept being assured that our package would go through, "next week". If you were on the old boards, you will remember my posting listings and asking for advice.

I looked for houses for a year and a half. During that time, we really cleaned up our credit, and put the family on a financial diet. We put every spare dollar into savings for a down payment.

We found a house we were in love with. Made an offer that was accepted. then we found out there would be another delay selling our house. I still remember how despondent I felt. We ended up losing the contract. Then months went by, and nothing else became available in the area where we were looking. My Dh was so depressed that he would not even look at other houses.

All of the delays meant that we had more in savings than we expected. When it was really time to buy, we found a bigger house in a much better neighborhood, with a pool and a beautiful barn on a very quiet street with huge trees.

It was a frustrating time, but It is really true that every house we missed out on was because God had something even better in store for us.

Hang in there. I know it is hard.

  6. Where do I sign up? I'm ready...

The longer I homeschool, the more I think that asylums may be under-rated. Think about it... when was the last time someone served you three meals a day, cleaned up after you, let you wander aimlessly around the yard, and had you take naps in the afternoon? And that's not even mentioning the happy, mind-altering drugs they give you.

The whole asylum thing is starting to sound better and better... ;)

  7. Here's what my advisor (ex-Sci teacher, now homeschool parent and reviewer) said about Elementary Science.

Don't worry about it too much. You can do pretty much whatever you want at that level and it's okay. Library books, help mom plant a garden, study bugs; whatever. You really don't need anything formal until Middle School when you should consider a general sci or physical sci course.

This all depends upon your state, of course.

Most Elementary Sci courses are all about pretty pics and fun facts, etc. But real science is about math. I'd focus on math more than Sci in Ele level and do Science anyway you want to.

One year we did Astronomy half a year and Earth Sciences half a year and played weather man. Went to the observatory right up the road and learned about stars, and spent long evenings star gazing. Online there are tons of sites on Astronomy for Kids which she went through and we learned so much that year. Loved it. We still go out with our binoculars and gaze, and she still remembers the constellations and their names, etc.

Make it fun. I think the key is to foster a love of Sci at that level and work on the Math. You can't really do *real* science until they have a couple of years of Alg under their belt, anyway. And if they get thru Calculus, all the better! Then you can tackle some serious science coursework.

    Hope this helps some.

    Take care,

    Kim

  8. We were told early on that I'd never have children. 12 years into the marriage we decided to take a vacation to New Mexico, and while there, we went hiking in the Sandias. I slipped and broke a finger...at the time I thought it was just sprained.

When I got back to my nice, professional job I decided to go down to the nurses area and have my hand x-rayed. They asked if I could be pregnant...I just chuckled and said, "that's unlikely." But, they made me take a prego test, anyway...which came back positive.

I called my husband and told him he'd better sit down. I told him I went down to the nurses station to get an x-ray of my hand and I found out I was pregnant.

There was this reallllly long pause and then he says, "What kind of technology do they have now-days that you can tell someone's pregnant from a hand x-ray?"

    What a goof ball.

Anyway, obviously God had other plans.

  9. Hi again, your comment sparked a memory.

My husband lived out in the country when he was young and said that it was a hard transition from living in the city. Most of the people he knew that moved out into the country for the same reasons you site ended up moving back into town when they found out how much work and expense it was to live in the country, and that they had to drive long distances to get anything they needed. It became a real hassle for many of them and they just quit the country life. It's often more expensive to live in the country, believe it or not...esp if you have animals, etc.

I live in rural WV, now. Before we lived in town between 2 cities (Wash DC and Balt). I thought it was going to be much cheaper out in rural WV. Wrong. The houses are less expensive, true, and the property taxes are less....

But, WV nickels and dimes you TO DEATH because they tax everything. Plus, you drive all the time to get to anything. Also, there's really nothing here. Even the library system is poor, so we drive to MD to get books and shop. After all the gas money, it's cheaper to just order stuff online and wait for it.

Plus, the culture is completely different. So finding a church has been difficult. They're not into change and the teaching, here, isn't the greatest IMHO.

Not to discourage, just to give you the big picture. Again, everything has it's downside. If space is what you want, prepare to sacrifice other things you want just as much.

    :)

  10. and I'm still not out West like I dreamed of being when I was younger. ;)

I'm not writing this to discourage you. Believe me, I'm just as female as you are and where my nest is makes a big difference.

But I have learned over the years that God is good and He really does know what's best. He's taken really good care of us over the years.

Now I have Psoriatic Arthritis in 6 joints and have to exercise at the gym every day to stay off the meds, which destroy your liver over time. Sigh.

But now that I'm working out at the gym with the family, we've never felt better. Losing weight and doing great without the drugs.

But I prayed to be healed. . .

The point is, sometimes God has a way of working things out for us that isn't what we expect but ends up just what we really want and need and didn't know it.

Hang in there. I joke with people that, while I was in Maryland I prayed that God would let us move out West....so He sends me to West Virginia, which proves He has a sense of humor. Do you realize that WV is the only state that has the word, "West" in it?

I, too, hate the cold because of my joints. But I've learned over time that what we think will be better isn't always the case. WHo knows if living in a warmer place would actually be better? God does; we don't. I mean, there is a downside to leaving in a warm climate, just as there's a downside to living in the cold. No place is perfect.

...and now my sister has just moved out West. Sigh.

I really don't agonize over it anymore. I'm at peace with where I'm living, now. If He never lets me move out West, so be it.

I've learned that God usually waits until we put down whatever it is we're coveting before He'll give it to us. He doesn't want us to be OWNED by things(which I know you know already), but to learn to be content. I can honestly say that I'm content for the most part, and I'm happy with the home He's given me and certainly happy that my family is doing well.

I have a feeling that my heavenly home will be a hacienda with a wide veranda wrapping all the way across the front of it so that I can look out over a wide, glorious field of horses...

Maybe He's just saving the best for last?

Take care, focus on the Lord.

  11. I believe MUS works for some kids. I thoroughly enjoyed Steve's demos on the DVD. But because MUS doesn't review old lessons as much as spiral, I found that my daughter was forgetting how to do certain problems and would have to go WAY back into the book to figure it out all over again. We used MUS all the way thru Pre-Alg and toward the end of Pre-Alg it was only getting worse.

I switched to a spiral approach using CLE's math and we love it. This approach constantly reviews things learned so that the student doesn't forget.

No adult forgets how to add and subtract because they use it all the time, but most of us adults not in a math occupation forget how to do the Algebra, because we never use it outside of a school setting.

    Plain and simple.

I love the Spiral approach and wished I'd had it when I was in school.

  12. You can start CLE at any level, but you must take the diagnostic test first to place. CLE is challenging so don't be surprised if you have to start at a lower level than you thought you'd start at.

I did a little 600, for ex, over last summer before beginning mine in 700. I thought there were only a couple of areas my daughter would have to review in 600 before starting in 700...but the LU was SOOO GOOOD that I made her do all of the LUs I picked up for 600.

She's learning so much with this curriculum. I highly recommend it.

    Kim

I love CLE, but I think it might be hard to jump into late in the sequence. I may be wrong though! Another solid choice I will also use is from Christian Liberty Press.

Applications of Grammar (Book 1 starts in 7th grade):

  13. I absolutely love this program. My daughter has learned so much this year! I wish I'd known about it from the beginning. Would have solved many headaches for planning and accomplishing her LA.

I love how they incorporate history into the lessons. Last LU we learned all kinds of things about WWII, this LU we're learning about early American History while diagramming sentences, etc.

Has dictation or copywork, punctuation, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, etc.

We're using 700 level this year. Finished most of 600 last summer and will be moving into 800 next fall.

    I give it 5 stars!

  14. Anyone else? :) I understand that the units are from several levels and cover a certain number of topics, and the units aren't meant to flow into each other, so that doesn't bother me.

As far as drudgery, I've found that if a subj isn't interesting to you, it doesn't matter who wrote the text, it'll be drudgery. We love Astronomy, here, and have an observatory down the road from us.

As long and the entire subj is covered, that's okay by me.

Anyone feel that areas of coverage were missing?

Thanks...actually I picked up a college text the other day and may use it. It was 99 cents, ha!

    Kim

  15. Hi, I'm trying to find out info on the LifePac Selects, which focus on one topic and use several levels of workbooks to cover the subj.

I've combed the Internet and I haven't found any real reviews. But I've used things that no one else has used and loved it, so I'm not ready to quit on this. :)

Has anyone used the Astronomy Select set? What opinions do you have?

    Thanks!

    Kim

  16. Sounds like there's just about everything under the Sun going on out there--good, bad and otherwise. What a mix!

    Gee, I'm so sheltered, ha!

I'm kinda old, but we still had the dope in school, cat fights in the restrooms, bullies, kids trying to out-swear one another, etc etc...

I was beat up/pushed around in the locker room and threatened by a gang that ran around in Middle School.

(In other words, my PS experience was far from innocent.)

Irony is, we didn't have dances. Hmmm....

Fast forward to 2009, I still worry about the young girls out there, these days.

    Best wishes, all!

    Kim

  17. For each light unit you have about 60 words; 20 for each of the 3 sections of the lightunit. The words either cover a topic/theme (like world capitals), or spelling digraphs/trigraphs, homonyms, bible-related, etc.

They ask you to copy them on a separate piece of paper, and within the LU you will be asked to define them (if applicable), or locate them with the appropriate country (if a capital list), or identify the pronunciation from a dictionary, use them in sentences, etc.

That way, the child gets plenty of ways to practice the words before the spelling quiz, which they take when they take the regular lightunit quizzes.

Then there's a final test for the entire LU and a final spelling test for all the words, usually about 30 of the harder-to-spell words from the entire LU.

Sometimes I pick other words than those they suggest for the final test if my daughter had trouble with different ones than those listed.

    Kim

  18. I'm not one for dancing, personally. As a believer I think allowing a child to attend a school dance with blaring, ungodly music and suggestive dancing going on isn't wise or healthy.

Dancing isn't nec wrong, of course; I see nothing wrong with folk dances and waltzes or square dancing, etc where it's a group/community event, for ex.

A lot of things go on in proms that I don't care to go into.

But my question is, can a school legally keep someone from going to a dance on their own time just by getting someone to sign a piece of paper?

I'd think the courts would throw this one out. I can't see how the school got away with this in the first place.

    Kim

What do you think of this news story?

A student at a Baptist school will be suspended if he attends his girlfriend's prom (at a public school.)

I don't have a problem with it, if the school communicated their rules and resulting discipline for breaking the rules up front. Just wondering what others think.
