  1. We do! We use the KJV Bible to read each lesson, since it can be a few chapters, we spread each lesson over a week. The guide tells you at the top where in the Bible to find the story. It works great, I just ignore the parts that talk about looking at and discussing the pictures in the Golden Children's Bible. You can easily do the questions orally, which we do because I think it is a lot of writing, but I do have my dd8 do the review worksheets and test herself.

    Thank you :001_smile:

  2. The maps are in the MP material. Quite a bit of writing. I think you could use it with any Bible.

    Thank you.

I thought I remembered a post at one time where someone actually said they used another bible. Maybe I am imagining it as I can't seem to find it now.

  3. Truly there is something precious to enjoy at every stage of their growing up. Even parenting adults! I became a grandparent for a 2nd time over the weekend and knowing that my ds has a dd and ds of his own is just an incredibly emotional experience.

Aww, congrats to you and your ds.

  4. :iagree:

My dd keeps reminding me, "This time next year, I'll be getting ready to go off to college."

Yes, my DD keeps talking more and more about college now.

Wait til they move into their dorm and you don't get to hug them every morning. :crying: Mandy

:crying: Ok, this makes me want to cry already.

Wait til they are going into their junior year of college and start talking about getting married to the young person they started dating as a freshman.

    Mandy

And I don't even want to think about this one yet.:svengo:

  5. Has anyone ever used this with a regular bible and not the Golden Children's Bible? My son loves to read straight from his NIrV Adventures bible. Would it be too hard to line up? I see in the Teacher's guide samples that some of the activity questions focus on the pictures in the Golden Children's Bible. Is it like this throughout the study? Also are the maps in the MP materials or in the Golden Children's Bible? ANd one last questions....MP has Christian Studies listed for 3-7 grades. Those that have done it with a 3td grader, was it a bit much? Do you wish you would have waited longer?

Sorry for all of the questions so early this morning. TIA!!

  6. an ed psych or neuropsych (there are phds and there are MDs; our psych has a PhD and has been called a neuropsych, but she advertises herself as a psychologist)

I'm quite surprised and disappointed that your psych did not do IQ testing before diagnosing the ADD. I would be reluctant to accept such a diagnosis without IQ and achievment testing to rule out other possible LDs. A lot of other issues have symptoms that overlap with ADD.

To find someone, you can call the neuropsych department at your local university. (Also, around here, the psychs who test for giftedness also tend to be experienced at testing for LDs; you can find a list by state on Hoagies or check the websites of any gifted schools in your area under their admissions tab for their list of approved testers.) Another alternative might be googling for psychs who do dyslexia testing.

I will be asking her at our next appt about the IQ testing. She did have me bring in tons of his work and examples of stuff he reads. They also administered the IVA (Integrated Visual and Auditory Performance) computerized test, which he bombed.

  7. No he has not had IQ testing? Where is the best direction to go for that? I am so new to all of this.

I will ask about the evaluation by an SLP. I did find an audiologist through the University of Florida (about 45 minutes from us) that does APD testing. I really need to find the best route to take in all this as we are paying for all of this out of pocket.

  8. My son was recently diagnosed by a psych for ADD and Childhood Anxiety Disorder. I have also thought for a while now that we may have some AP issues going on. The psych agrees, but she of course can't test for that as she is not a NP. I am looking into getting him evaluated somewhere. There is only one NP in our area covered by DS's insurance and well, he doesn't get great reviews. (some suit even filed against him for fraud) I am going to look into our school system to see if that is an option. Why does it have to be so hard to get help!? :banghead:

So... until I can get him evaluated, I would like to learn all I can. Do you have any great books/websites to recommend? DS does have an appt with her next week for play therapy for his CAD. I will ask her about books then, but I really wanted the opinion and recommendations of the hive. Those that have BTDT. :001_smile:

  9. We will be using the book that Kleine Hexe linked in addition to this one that I picked up on a bargain table at Barnes and Noble. We also have several DK books on the specific wars. Most libraries carry them. They will have all of the weapons, vehicles etc used during each. When we study the civil war we will also be using this playset.

These books are not on just weapons but a great fun addition to American History. My son is also enjoying watching the Liberty Kids DVDs on the American Revolution.

Oh yeah..here is a thread I started a while back about some resources having to do with weapons, spies and military vehicles.

  10. :iagree: I'm pondering the "good enough" plan right now as I'm weighing everything.

    And I need more coffee!

Anytime I seem to be going round and round about what to use/plan and I feel like my head is spinning, I take a break for a few days. I simply walk away from all planning and decisions. (and shhhh - even the boards :svengo:) I get a book (or 2 or 3) from the library. One that is easy to read, no thought involved, has a good story line, the kind a call "brain candy." I take extra time to play some games with the kids and just take it easy and think nothing about curriculum.

  11. I'll just stick my wizened nose in for one minute and suggest that sometimes the answer depends on the reason(s) the things last year flopped. If they flopped last year because of issues on your end (too intimidating, not practical for your number of kids, too much prep, whatever), then that's what you have to be mindful of and solve. If they flopped because of things on your kids' end (unidentified SN, not feeling well, too busy with co-op to actually get done the things you planned, etc. etc.), then THAT'S what you have to solve. Make sure you're solving the right problem.

You bought IEW for a reason. You might want to say out loud to yourself what that reason was. Sometimes what skews our judgment when we get into all this is perfectionism. 4th grade (what you're hitting up on?) is an awful age. They're more independent and you're trying harder but you're busy with more kids. So you try really, really hard, right at the time when it would REALLY BE OKAY to back off, plow quietly and solidly, and have fun. Yes you have things to do, but the amount a 4th grader NEEDS to do is still SO small (compared to junior high), it's really ok to make that list, get it done in a peaceful way, and let it be good enough. Make a good enough plan, kwim? Don't try for a perfect plan. Make up a "this would be good enough if I got this done" list in your mind and then have a couple extra bonus things if there's time. Give yourself some peace. You still have years ahead to burn yourself out with stress over trying hard. This is not the year to try hard. Honest. :)

    Very wise and excellent advice!

  12. Holy Garbanzo Beans, Batman! That's awesome! Thanks so much for posting this. You win the prize!

Check out her lesson on shades of meaning, pages 131-132. It was close to last and it was one of my favorites!

People who own a variety of resources (me, for sure ) will notice a synthesis of a lot of different concepts written about elsewhere. I saw shades of Killgallon here and there, lots of TWJ...

The power of Google. Gotta love it. :D I can't wait to sit down and read through this later. Right now I am in the middle of cleaning bathrooms and washing clothes. Of course with the occasional WTM board break thrown in. It makes cleaning bearable.
