  1. Arrrghhh, this still -after 27 years- hits a nerve with me. I have SIL who told me this in no uncertain terms. I'd be interested in other people's responses.

I'll take a stab at this ;). If you've accepted Jesus you have the Holy Spirit, but (from my AG background) tongues is the initial physical evidence of being "filled/baptized" in the Holy Spirit as found in the book of Acts.
  2. We did Beyond then switched back to Sonlight then decided to try Preparing since there was a lot more independence in the guide. I am loving Preparing. For us I've noticed the guides get better the higher you get :) We also used SOTW for history and was great with the AG, but I'm not good at getting to the library to get all the extra books :)

  3. I like Sonlight. I have a hard time following the IG though. When we did Core C I ended up dropping the IG and then using SOTW with the activity guide. Almost all the history books from Sonlight are recommended in the SOTW AG so we used them then and just read the read alouds at our own pace. I feel we got more out of using that SOTW activity guide with their questions and Mapwork than using the sunlight IG.

  4. I'm an ADD mom with 1 ADHD kid and we have done SL and HOD. It is easier for me to complete and stick with HOD because of the layout of the guide, I just have 1 day before me and when it's done I don't have to see it again. I want to love SL and do but there are so many flipping of pages in the guide and books and it has the whole week ahead of me that I tend to struggle with it. HOD truthfully has a lot of the great books SL carries also so we don't feel like we are missing out on that too much :)

  5. Thank you all for your advice :)

While the Dr mentioned talking to her other Dr about ways to cope with anxiety.

I would rather suggest that ways to cope with new situations, is the real issue?

Where you also said that she has SPD, which is often associated being overwhelmed with sensory information?

Which is highlighted in new situations.

So that when you wrote that: 'After about 45 minutes she finally felt comfortable...'

Perhaps this could be restated as taking about 45 minutes, to make sense of her new situation?

An important distinction is between a new situation, where we are either a passive observer, or active participant?

I think you actually nailed this one on the head. I hadn't thought about her anxiety situation in new situations as being related with her SPD, but I think that makes a lot of sense. She is on Concerta but she acts the same in these situations with or without the meds. I know they had talked about referring her to a place that works with kids with SPD so we might look into that also. THanks :)

  6. So my 7 year old who has ADHD, SPD and some anxiety in new situations is getting a little worse with her anxiety. We went to the doctors for her yearly checkup and she clammed up real bad. She wouldn't get out of her chair even to get her weight checked. After about 45 minutes she finally felt comfortable enough with the staff to weigh her and check her BP and stuff. The Dr mentioned that we should talk to her other Dr about ways to cope with anxiety, but since her next appointment isn't for about another 2 months I was wondering if you guys might have some suggestions and helpful resources :) TIA

  7. Our kids are the same age and we're having #5 too. I'm almost 30 weeks now and feel a lot better now that I am towards the end of my pregnancy. Give yourself grace and just know that you will start feeling better and you can do it. We've used some Time4learning when I was stuck in bed and a lot of independent reading for the oldest and teaching textbooks has helped a lot. Sometimes my kids have learned the most when they've had to learn it on their own.

Moby wrap had always been great too. I think for me the 2 & 3 year olds are the most work ;)

  8. How old is your house? We had our ductwork cleaned and that helped my ds a lot. I have bad reflux and sinus issues too and take Prilosec for it, the worse my reflux the worse my sinuses tend to be too. Hope she gets to feeling better.

  9. This thread makes me feel better too :) my 9 year old has always been my mellow little helper but lately he has been getting so mad and frustrated and my perfect little man has had to go to his room in a fit over math or writing a couple sentences, screaming, yelling etc. Glad to know part of it is age and hormones :)

  10. So my ds who just turned 9 is really struggling lately with following directions. I will give him detailed directions on how to do something, have the instructions in front of him and he seems to just do his own thing. For instance we were doing LA today and talking about indenting sentences and I gave and example and showed him how to do it and he still didn't do it, or his science handout where he was suppose to draw something in a box and write his conclusion under it on the lines and he can tell me back what he is suppose to do and then he just writes about it in the box where he is suppose to color even though the directions were right in front of him. I know these are little things, but it just seems like every subject he is doing directions just go right over his head. Can someone help, it is really frustrating me. He just seems like he has been in Lala land lately and doesn't want to focus :)

  11. It couldn't hurt to pursue if that's what he wanted but I will say at 12 you will have a wide range of crazy talented kids to awesome kids :) It may not hurt also to expose him to other instruments as well. I went through a couple and landed on the bassoon and my mom the cello. I will say if you are good you can get some nice scholarships too, and my mom was paid to get work on her doctorate :) I have known some professionals who have also not found their nitch until college too, so you never know, but the piano is a tougher instrument to make it on.
