  1. Can you share your experiences with SWR?  DD(8) is having a hard time with reading and I am worried that she will end up disliking it.  She has articulation issues, PDD-NOS, ADHD, cognitive delays and expressive language delays.  She tries so hard to sound out words and read but it just doesn't seem to be working.  I honestly think if she could memorize words she would do better with reading.  She gets frustrated and then ends up stuttering and she just can seem to blend the sounds and her words end up sounding "choppy".  She does really well in math, spelling and sight words so I was wondering if this program might work for her.  I am getting tired of trying different programs and end up wasting $$$.  I can usually tell right away if something will work.

  2. My DD(8) has ADHD combined type as well as PDD-NOS and sensory issues.  I advice to you is a keep a diary of his behaviour when he does start on meds.  DD started out on Vyvanse and that particular med was the devil for her.  At 8 years old she went down to 38 lbs and was having horrible rages several times a day.  She is currently taking Focalin and Kapvay and so far we have a winner with this combination.  DD realizes how much better she does on the meds.  I think the key is finding the right med for him whether it be an older med or a newer one.

  3. Expanding on another post about phonemic awareness, can I get opinions on HearBuilders and Earobics.  DD(8) has a hard time with reading and I am worried because she is falling further behind.  She was just again tested for CAPD with inconclusive results because of her articulation.  She definitely has some kind of processing issue going on but what we just don't know.  She does have a difficult time with phonological awareness and I really would like to address this with some sort of computer fun type game in order to make her want to do it.  Has anyone used either of these programs and if so, what can you tell me about them?

  4. We are almost halfway through Horizon's math 1 right now.  There have been good days and bad days and days where she couldn't tell you 1+1.  At first we started with the facts that added up to 9.  I showed her the flashcards everyday for weeks and then it clicked and now she knows them totally.  I encouraged her to used C Rods for her math exercises.  Eventually I stopped showing her the answers on the cards and if she didn't know it she would use her C Rods to figure it out.  Now she knows her addition facts to 18 very well.  We recently started on subtraction and she's going through the same thing and slowly learning.  She can tell you what 8-1= but not 8-7=.  I just keep encouraging her for she will eventually get it.  I made a chart of all math facts up to 18 and as she mastered them I would check them off.  This gave her a lot of confidence to see what she had mastered and was a challenge for her to master the rest.   DD is PDD-NOS and has cognitive delays which makes it harder for her in many ways.  Math is just one of her likes.

  5. It seems like we are always going to therapy.  DD does 2 hours of ABA on Tuesday and Thursday mornings followed by and hour and a half of ST/OT.  On Monday and Wednesday afternoons she does an hour long ST/literacy program.  My best advice is to take it day by day.  There are some days where she falls asleep on the way home and we don't get as much done as I would like.  Fridays are the day where we try to get most of her schoolwork done because we don't leave the house!!!  I do work with her here and there and if it doesn't get done I don't stress out.  I am trying to go the year round approach so that should help.  It helped this week when I called it a "Fall break" and closed the school room door

  6. DD(8) has speech articulation issues.  She has been in ST for 7 years now and is making progress but still has a ways to go.  She was adopted from China at 13 months and had severe hearing issues which have since been corrected.  She has no hearing problems now but the damage has been done with her speech.  I am doing first grade level work with her now and things are going well excpet for reading.  I am using AAR level 1 now with no major problems up until lesson 22.  She tries to sound the words out and starts stuttering and gets frustrated.  Blends are extremely difficult for her.  We are both getting frustrated.  She wants to learn to read so bad.  I am at my wits end and beginning to lose patience.  If she knows the word then she has no problem saying it although it might be slightly off with the articulation.  She has this ability to memorize sight words but I can't have her memorize everyword in the English language.  I just don't know what to do now.  I am open to any suggestions you might have to offer.

  7. I am getting DD's schedule together for the Fall and I just don't see how we can get everything done that we need to :banghead:   She will have at least 4 hours a week of ABA spread over either 2 or 3 days and 5 hours of OT and ST spread over 4 days per week.  We just put PT on hold for a while or we would be adding in another 2 hours.  Add in an hour of drive time each day and it seems to take out a chunk of our time.  DD(8) really needs these therapies due to her SPD, PDD-NOS with feature's of Asperger's, ADHD and other delays.  Some days she just isn't able to do much work because of being overwhelmed or meltdowns that can be triggered by anything.  I am concentrating on math, reading, handwriting and vocabulary right now but really would like to add in other things for her.  I don't want her to get behind later because she didn't get science and history in the early grades.  Finding the right balance between therapy and schoolwork just isn't happening yet.  I have classified her as 1st grade this year and we started yesterday.  She is loving Horizon's math and Wordly Wise 3000    I put so much guilt on myself for everything and worry so much about her future and her education.  Anyone else in the same situation with balancing therapy/appointments/schoolwork?  I would love to know how you handle/schedule it all.

  8. We did Horizons for math because it's cyclical enough that it will repeat the material again (and again and again and again and... ) which is great for when he had an off day. He is the kid who will fly through material like it's nothing, ace it like a whiz, then the next day stare at the same problems like he has never seen such a thing in his life.

Sounds like my DD. I tried so hard to get Singapore math to work with DD.  I finally had to stop the madness and realize that it wasn't working.  I went with Horizon's and haven't regretted it one bit.  She loves math now and begs to do it everyday.  She is actually mastering the concepts.  We do have an off day ocassionally with her cognitive delays but Horizon's helps with that because it does repeat.

  9. We too tried Singapore because it is so highly regarded.  I wanted it to work, but it did not for us.  It clearly is a good program with lots of challenge.

Same here.  I just finally had to accept that it wasn't a good fit for my DD.  I switched her to Horizon's Math several months ago and haven't regretted it once.  She is begging to do math everyday and is doing really well.

  10. I am hoping to get some suggestions for a spelling program for DD(8). She was diagnosed with PDD-NOS with feature's of Asperger's last year along with cognitive delays and working memory difficulty. She also has speech delays and her articulation is not the best but getting better through therapy. Her short term memory is giving us problems but her long term memory is a totally different story. She has a tendancy not to forget anything. She loves doing sight words and she is very good at it. It doesn't seem to take much for her to pick up on them. I am doing AAR 1 and Wordly Wise 3000 with her and she has a good vocabulary and her reading is coming on nicely but slow because of her articulation. Now she is wanting to do spelling and I think it would be good for her and a confidence booster as well. I am just having a hard time picking a spelling program for her with so many to choose from. Can I get some recommendations on a program that might be a good fit for her. She does have a hard time breaking down the individual sounds. Is there one that is more "visual" than others? If it matters, she doesn't mind writing words out.

  11. The NP we went to didn't take insurance either but it wouldn't have mattered because our insurance doesn't cover any of DD's therapies. She was well worth the price because we did get a much needed diagnosis. How would we go about setting up something where we could list known NP's by state? I know I have helped another member here by suggesting the NP we took our DD to.
