  1. I have never had a problem with teaching DB's until now.  I am just starting Level 7 in Book B and I am stumped.  It is the "ew and ue" sounds.  I am going over the page before introducing it to her and I realize that there are two different sounds for "ew and ue" and I can't figure out a rule to explain to her.  Examples are the "you" sound in few and pew versus new and chew and the "you" sound in argue and hue versus blue and due.  I hope I am explaining this right.  I am lost and need help  ((PLEASE)).

  2. I am going to hang in there until the end of Book C.  Bancing Bears is the only thing that has worked for DD and she does enjoy it.  There are times when I have to slow down and we might only do one or two pages at a time.   As far as the "mastered" words, I put the entire Dolch sight word list onto flash cards and we go over them once a week.  DD knows every word on the Dolch list so she knows not to sound them out.  We are about 3/4 of the way through Book B.  Hang in there

  3. My dd almost placed into 3rd grade math (she missed one more than she could on the placement test). Of course, the items she missed were grouped into a couple of sections that she hasn't learned yet. I'm wondering if those sections are all in Workbook 2 of 2nd grade and I could just start her there instead of starting at the beginning of Grade 2, which looks like a lot of review from the samples. I have looked everywhere I know to look for Table of Contents of the 2nd workbook, and I can't find it! Even CBD's "Table of Contents" link is not the table of contents.

SSSOOOOOO, I'm wondering if anyone who owns the TM or the second workbook can tell me if these things are covered in book 1 or 2: ratio, addition and subtraction of thousands, roman numerals (not so worried about this as I can teach her this myself), and problems having to do with the "shaded fractional part of the whole," which *I* couldn't even figure out what they were asking on the placement test.

Also, is there anything else I need to know about starting in the middle of the year? Is it doable? I'm still not sure if I'm going to switch her over, just thinking about it...Thanks for any help/advice you can give!

Just pulled out my Teacher's manual and this is something you could do with a review of Book #2.  Ratios and Roman Numerals aren't covered until then.  Fractions and addition/subtraction in thousands both begin in Book #1 but have lots of review in #2.  The "shaded fractional part of the whole" is how many items are there total and then how many of those items are shaded.  There are 4 cats total and 1 is shaded so the fraction is 1/4.  We like Horizon's Math and DD is doing really well in it.  She begs to do it in fact  :hurray:

  4. I went into Mardel this morning to check on something and they got R&S in stock last week.  I heard they were going to start carrying it in store but not online.  Wish I had known this last month before I ordered.  My store didn't have enough room for it so it was scattered on end caps for now.  They are getting ready for the big sale next month so they had quite a bit in stock.

  5. How long has it taken your DD to go through a level?

My concern is that if I start level A now (and each level takes a full year) that puts him still learning to read in 5th grade.  I know you can't rush things like learning to read.  BUT it really scares me that he is going to fall terribly behind because I keep fiddling around with finding a reading program.

It took us a few months to go through level A.  I slowed down where we needed to so as to master it.  It definitely won't take a year for 1 level.  If he already has some experience reading then he will go through it much faster.

  6. I am using DB with DD(9) and it is the only program that has worked with her and we tried several.  We both despised AAR/AAS.  She is currently half way through Book B.  I suggest starting with Book A and going through all 3 levels.  You could use the same book with both and just use different color pencils to make the check marks.  The stories in the book are strange but we both like them and I suggest reading them because they reinforce what is being taught.  We usually spend about 15 minutes a day with it.  We also use Apples and Pears spelling and ETC phonics and I find they compliment eachother at this stage.

  7. We just returned from 10 days in Ft. Lauderdale.  DH had some work training to attend so DD and I tagged along.  I didn't have her do anything in the car except draw/watch videos.  Once we got there I had her do about 1 hour a day and then it was just light work.  Horizons math and ETC and some math worksheets.  We had just started multiplication tables and I didn't want her to forget what she had learned.

  8. I am looking for recommendations for a good microscope for DD(8).  She has been asking for one for quite a while and I have decided to go ahead and buy her one but I would like to get a nicer one that might last through her school years.  There are so many on Amazon and I just don't know where to start.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

  9. It's still worth finding cheap on the used market just for the answer key and extra tests. :)

I bought mine used this year.  I like to have it because it does have the answers in the back and I admit I needed help a few times when I didn't understand something.  Also, it tells you which concepts to review and that might not be reflected in the workbook.

  10. We are working on Horizons grade 2 math but here is what I think.

    1.  I have never used them as a timed test.  I don't even give the regular tests as timed.

    2.  I would just use them as needed for extra practice.  We aren't even using them at all this year.

    3.  I would just pick the cards he needs help with and concentrate on one thing a day.  Don't do too many cards with him.

DD absolutely loves Horizons math and is doing really well.  I think they expect a lot out of them but they present it in a way that the kids do learn.  I don't care for the manual either and think it could be more parent friendly.

  12. Has anyone here ever supplemented Horizon's Math with another program?  If so, why and what did you use?  DD(8) is going through Horizons with no problem.  We just started Grade 2 last week and she really enjoys it and begs to do math.  She is on the Spectrum and does have problems in many areas.  Math is her one area where she excels and she knows it.  She has all her facts memorized.  Her weakness in math is the "mental" part.  If she hasn't memorized it or can't see it then she struggles.  I was thinking of starting her in Singapore Math 1B.  Just looking for suggestions and/or advice.

  13. Thanks for all the replies.  We started DB today and DD loves it.  She said it was much better the the other programs.  I did have her use the cursor today and told her we will use it for a while.  It seemed to help her say the words smoothly without chopping up the sounds.  She actually asked to do more but I told her that was enough for today :)

  14. I need a little help.  I finally have decided to go with DB after looking at and/or trying out several programs.  I am starting with Level A even though she already knows many of the words.  She needs help with blending and reads slowly.  She also has speech articulation issues and according to DB this shouldn't be an issue.  This whole thing with the cursor has me confused.  Do you use the cursor with every single word in the book?  Do they sound out all the words and then repeat it correctly?  Do you do the same for all the sentences?  At what point will they be able to not use the cursor if they know a word?  See, I'm just confused.  I'm "cursor" challenged and I need help and maybe a :chillpill:  on top.  I really wish they made some demo videos for us to be able to watch and maybe I wouldn't feel so stupid for not being able to figure it out.

  15. Panda, jumping in late to see how you're doing on this?  Remember we have the LC board as well.  With the list of issues you have, her phonemic awareness and working memory are both probably affecting her ability to sound out and read.  On the articulation and expressive language delay, have you checked to see if it's *apraxia*?  Apraxia is motor-control.  They say in about 50% of spectrum cases the language issues will be caused by apraxia.  Needs a different kind of treatment that addresses the underlying motor control problem.  (We get PROMPT.)

Anyways, my dd never started sounding out words till we did VT.  Her errors with sounding out words were identical to her errors handling long digit spans, which is why (after you think about it) it's obvious that working memory is intrinsically necessary to sound out words.  So the more you're trying to use a sound it out approach to reading, the more you're going to have to work on remediating it.  Now SWR does *not* teach a sound it out approach.  SWR has them *spell* their way into reading.  They spell the word, write it in their log, read it back.  Then they write it on a small flashcard to practice to automaticity.  It skirts the working memory issue.  It worked for my dd.  I can't guarantee it will work for yours, only saying it worked for mine.

Did they run a CTOPP on her when she had the psych evals?  CTOPP would be looking at phonological processing (reading disorder, dyslexia, etc.).  Because of her speech problems, you need to go back and make sure that's she's actually hearing everything correctly and processing all the sounds.  AAS does this very well, SWR will explain how, and of course there's software like Earobics.

I'd back up one step farther and do the pretest at Barton, just to make sure you don't need even more foundational steps like LiPS (Gander Publishing).

Thanks for asking and thanks for all the responses.  I have had DD tested for everything I can think of.  Her last CAPD test came back inconclusive again because of her articulation.  I have talked to several of her supervisors and therapists this past month to get their feedback.  They all tell me the same thing, she is a very complicated child with many issues that are all intertwined.  this makes it hard to pinpoint more exactly what is going on and be able to handle it that way.  We are just going to have with her as "a whole".  She probably spent the first 13 months of her life on her back in an orphanage/foster home and this played a huge part in her lack of development.  The first 18 months of her life were with hearing issues that we were finally able to get corrected but it did delay her greatly.  Then you add on the host of other issues she has.  Apraxia was mentioned as a possibility early on but now it is not being considered.  She does have the working memory issues and expressive language delay and I think this is a major part of her difficulties.  I have her in a ST/language literacy program 2 days a week at our local university and it is definitely helping.  She also goes to ABA/OT/ST each 2 times per week.  She is so tired of therapy and is glad the holidays are here.  I have ordered DB and am reading it currently.  I looked over SWR and took it back as it didn't look like what is was hoping it would be.  DD is a smart child but she struggles with her reading and comprehension.  She is a wiz at math and we are halfway through Horizon's grade one.  She does CLE spelling and enjoys it.  Wordly Wise is a fave as are studying sight words.  I did buy Hearbuilders for her and currently have her working on it.  Reading is going to happen but it is just so hard on both of us in the mean time.  I think that when it does happen it will be quick and very noticeable as with everything she masters.

  16. My DD(8) has the ability to put herself to sleep.  Seriously, if she doesn't want to do math she will fall asleep within 2 minutes.  I videotaped it one day because nobody believed me and showed it to her psychologist.  She confirmed several kids who had the ability to do the same thing.  She will start closing her eyes, her head will bob back and forth, her mouth will open slightly and she's out!!!
