  1. My pet is a full fledged member of my family.  If that is not true in other families, that's fine, but no one else can define my family dynamics for me. I don't know why it matters to anyone else how much I love my pet.  Others should stop asserting their opinions as truth.  It doesn't take anything away from other families for my family to do things differently.

  2. We say comino, but my spouse is Hispanic.

Before we got together I had never heard of it, so I didn't pronounce it any kind of way.

In fact, I was trying to explain a recipe to someone on a message board and we ended up having a back and forth because she didn't know what comino was and I had no idea how she could possibly cook without it, LOL. That's the day I figured out that comino and cumin are the same thing.

  3. I use Juice Beauty skin care.  It's an all natural skin care line with mostly certified organic ingredients.  They have a moisturizer with barrier sunscreen and they also have just dedicated sunscreen, which, I believe is also barrier.  I didn't match up their ingredient list with your list of ingredients to avoid, but I'm sure you could find that on their website. It's pretty user friendly.

  4. Start with the ones that have good test/return policies. I think you can test before you buy at most department stores. Younique is full money back refund. I've heard some people say they have successfully returned at drugstores.

That's a good idea. Do you have an Ulta? They have a 60 day no-questions-asked return policy. I've returned stuff almost empty before. Keep the receipt and package, no problem. I spend so much freaking money there, I don't feel guilty if I live with something for a couple of months and then decide it's just not me.

  5. I think mascaras work differently on each person's lashes. I consider Voluminous to be a "dry" mascara. For me, it completely separates and coats each lash and never, ever clumps. It makes my lashes look very feathery and natural.

I've used They're Real and it just made my lashes look like a clumpy mess. The only way it works for me is as a top coat over Voluminous.

LOL, we were posting at the same time.  I guess we've had pretty different experiences with They're Real.

Maybe the OP can get a sample from before plunging in.  I always ask for samples.  They want to hook you, so they give them pretty freely.  That's how I got hooked.  I got a Smashbox, Urban Decay, Too Faced, and Benefit sample and compared them all.  I love the Benefit mascara.  I'm never going back.

  6. Benefit "They're Real" mascara is pretty fantastic.  It gives my lashes a bigger bolder than life look. I'm too lazy to wear false eyelashes, but I think this is the next best thing.   I think it would look really nice with the photo you posted.  I also wear liquid eyeliner with "wings," and this really accentuates an exaggerated eye. It is a little pricey ($24), but I stock up at Ulta when they have their 20% off all brand coupons.  The "They're Real" eyeliner is good too, but it takes a lot of practice, because the consistency and applicator are very different from any other liquid liner I have ever worn . . . and I have worn a lot of make-up, so that's saying something.

  7. Yes to the gift and stocking. And today she got her photo made with Santa Claus.

This is us.  Exactly.  Right down to the xmas portrait.

He LOVES unwrapping gifts.  We record it every year and get big laughs from it all year long.

  8. No celebrating in our small town. :( The Justice of the Peace is refusing to officiate ALL marriages (since it only says he "may" in the wording of his duties, not he "will"). The town clerk refuses to issue licenses until they get one that has different wording for "husband" and "wife", sticking to the letter of the law herself. Nobody will do a thing until the Attorney General & Lt Governor back down and accept federal law....and given current sentiments of the federal government over various other issues, I don't see anyone speeding up the timeline any more than they have to.

We have lots of counties in Texas stalling at the specific direction of our governor and AG. It's quite ridiculous. It's so ironic how close this is to Juneteenth, which is the day the Feds had to show up and force Texas to release the slaves. I wonder if Texas is going to drag its feet implementing the law of the land again.

A few counties have voluntarily complied, but the VAST majority of them have not and are hiding behind the AG's directive. It's so sad and frustrating. It IS the law. The county clerk is not running a church, but is a public servant to all constituents.

I'm just watching to see how this will play out.

Anyone who thought things would be different after Rick Perry stepped down was sadly mistaken.

  10. That's so weird! I live in Harris County and I've literally never heard of Confederate Heroes Day ever. Maybe Travis County is weird in more than one way?

You are not the only person who has said this to me.  It is SO weird, isn't it?  But it is true.  Very true.  In specific ways Travis County is a liberal oasis, but it is still Texas.  Every liberal decision is balanced within an inch of its life with a very restrictive counterweight.  Keep Austin Weird.

  11. I don't even know about Confederate Memorial Day. Some people here in the South refuse to acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr Day as that and instead observe it as Robert E. Lee Day. Oh, I guess they are not the same day, but next to each other.

I live in arguably the most liberal county in Texas, and Confederate Heroes Day is still a pretty big deal.  I have over a decade of state government employment and a LOT of people make a very obvious and concerted effort to take that day off work "to make a point."  It's supposed to be a skeleton crew workday, but several years the office had to be closed because no one would come to work.

  12. My county (in Texas) will start issuing same-sex marriage licenses here in about 30 minutes.

Hey, are you the Rebel that livesnear Waco, and has a son? If so, I haven't seen you around in a long time!

Yep, that is me. I live in Austin now though and commute to Waco 3 days a week.

OMG! Not to hijack, but I JUST put 2 & 2 together because of Dot's post.  It's so great to "see" you, Rebel!  As you know Baby Boy is all grown up now, like your KJ.  We did it!

  13. I love my Blendtec. I have to admit that my kid and I spent WAAAAAAYYYYY too much time watching episodes of "Will it Blend?" On YouTube, so Vitamix never stood a chance when we were ready to upgrade. We blend wheat berry, make green smoothies, make non dairy ice cream/sorbets, and just about anything else you can imagine. I haven't had one ounce of trouble or disappointment from it, but then again neither has my girlfriend who has a Vitamix. Honestly I think it's just personal preference. They really aren't that different.

  14. I have a close family member who has unfortunately had many mental health crises.  The worst places are the public health and/or hospital facilities.  Fortunately she does have excellent insurance (and is financially stable) and we are generally able to get her moved to private facilities most of the time, but only after the immediate crisis had passed.  A family member (read: me) needs to be there every day demanding/overseeing appropriate care.  It's so sad but so true.  And I do not believe this is only true of mental health. Whenever anyone in my immediate (or extended, if I can manage it) family has to be hospitalized for any reason, I make it a priority to never leave them alone in a medical facility.  If I can't be there, I'm on the phone coordinating with other family members to share times.  I've had too many experiences where the care level is just sub par if an assertive advocate is not always in the immediate vicinity.  It's sad, but it's my true experience.

And I am not sure if what you are experiencing is average or not, but it I am certain it is unacceptable and you should raise as much noise as possible to see that your family member is provided a more healing environment.

  15. We are SO excited.  We are going to see a matinee tomorrow.  Jurassic Park is the first movie my son ever saw when he came home from the hospital.  Of course, he slept all the way through it in my arms . . . in a brand new THX theater.  He's always been a great sleeper, LOL.  But I think I really set something off in him by taking him to the theater as an infant, because the Jurassic Park movies have always been his favorites. We have the DVDs and have  seen them all no less than 50 times apiece.  So . . . yes.  We are excited.

  16. Well, I have twin grandchildren and one has a BIG personality and everyone wants to be her friend and invite her everywhere. The other is much more quiet and reserved and has a little trouble making friends. However it would never occur to HER that her sister's friends weren't also her friends. It hurts my heart when she is excluded. If I had received an invitation for only one of them to a birthday party, I'd certainly decline. The mom in the OP is absolutely over the top, but I do understand where she is coming from.

  17. I'm sorry it's so difficult.  There is a method to the madness, but you kind of have to "know" it.

I'm not sure where you are located, but I'd be glad to offer any assistance that I can.  I'm in Texas, but I think the food stamp program works fairly similarly across states.  I was a food stamp caseworker for a very long time and I am currently a food stamp educator for our local workforce commission.

Have you tried calling and setting up your appointment at a more convenient time?  Do you have a spouse, significant other, or other trusted adult who can handle the appointment for you?  You should be able to set up an authorized representative to conduct business in your absence if necessary.

Also the resource limit for food stamps is pretty high, that question about your bank account isn't meant to trip you up, it's a legislative requirement.  Your answer, if under the specific guidelines, does not affect your benefit amount.

Also, once you get it set up, you should only have to re-certify every six months.  If your family needs the assistance, it is worth the effort to "play the game" a couple of times a year so that you can provide food to your family.

I'm so sorry it has to be this way.  PM me if you need more info/support.
