  1. We started using Shurley English 3 this year for the first time and it's not going well. The lessons are way too long-I lose the boys attention after what seems like forever of me talking with the script. They cry at the length of the lessons and while I've split up the lessons into two days the lesson i did today on 2 point expository paragraphs took forever, they still didn't get it and then we were all in tears. We are liking the classifying sentences and the jingles but are struggling with everyone else. Should I look for something else? If so, what would you suggest? I know I shouldn't appease their every desire but they are hating doing grammar and cry when I pull the book out. Any advice?
  2. I'm due May 29..she said I'm 6 weeks and everything looks great. She said once you see a heartbeat your chances of miscarriage go down to very little...thank you all for your wonderful comments..I really, really appreciate them!
  3. Just wanted to update those of you that were sweet enough to comment. I couldn't wait and went back to the doctor today. She suggested an ultrasound and thought we may at least see a fetal pole if their was something there..otherwise we would know the outcome... Well, we saw a fetal pole and a heartbeat..she said it was a miracle. So, this entire weekend I'd prepared myself for the miscarriage and was at peace with it and now she is congratulating me... I'm so scared now and really need some reassurance that this will be o.k. I'm scared because my twins will be 9 when this baby is born..please tell me it's going to be o.k. and this baby will be close with his/her older brothers...please???
  4. I know here in Charlotte it's really, really hard to find a job without living here first. Charlotte is so popular right now with folks moving from the NE and tons moving from Fl and everyone says to find a job before moving here but people aren't able to find jobs because so many are trying to come here :glare:... I know in our situation, my dad is desperatly trying to get out of Fl(we are half-backs) and has changed his address to ours in N.C. so it's easier to get a job here... Maybe if you know someone you can use their address? Best of luck!
  5. she just suggested I wait another 2 weeks for an ultrasound...
  6. Got the numbers back..they only went up 1500 they didn't double... She didn't sound to optimistic...
  7. Ughhh..the doctor's office just called. Apparently, the lab forgot to pick up my blood so I have to wait until tomorrow morning to find out the results...I didn't sleep at all last night..I just want to know...
  8. Well I went for my second blood test this afternoon and expressed my *concern* that maybe there was 2 babies in there...she reassured me that there was not 2 babies in there... I asked if she could call me tomorrow wit hthe results instead of coming in(because I have the boys with me)and she asked if I was o.k. with her calling with news of a miscarriage:confused:... I don't get it..my numbers seemed o.k. on the first round. Yes, the ultrasound said 4 weeks 3 days instead of what she though of my last mestrual period being 6 weeks ago..does that automatically mean miscarriage? I haven't had any more discharge at all...but she does have me really scared. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
  9. Thanks everyone. I called yesterday for my first hcg # and she said they were 5561 which would put me at 5 weeks but she still didn't say that meant much..she wanted to see the next set of # for the bloodwork I go to get today. I looked it up and it seems the #'s were o.k. but I have no idea... They did an ultrasound early because I said I was having a brown discharge(just a little bit) and when i looked at the bill the code on it said Abortion, threatened..so I guess they figured I may miscarry?:confused1:
  10. My boys are pretty good spellers and I started a new spelling program this year(Spelling Power)... It's not working out. Although they spell most of the words right it doesn't *teach* them spelling. They get very frustrated when they get one or two wrong on the test (this curriculum tests each day)..we just don't like it all the way around. I would love something computer based but am open to something else that will teach them spelling but isn't too simple... Any suggestions?:001_smile:
  11. I went to the doctor yesterday for my first visit. She said based on my last menstrual period I was 6 weeks but when they did the ultrasound it only showed 4 weeks 3 days...does that mean I'm going to miscarry? She didn't sound to optimistic.. She had me do blood work and I have to go back again on Wed. to take blood again to see if my hcg levels rise... Has anyone had any experience like this? Did it come out postive or did it result in a miscarriage?
  12. Me..found out last week. We were kindof trying:tongue_smilie: but now that it's actually happened, I'm really scared... Due May 2011 (My twins will be 9 when the baby is born so I'm more worried about that then anything else...)
  13. Thanks for the Skittles idea-I may have to steal that one. We are doing spelling power for spelling but not doing another writing curriculum..should I add that in since we aren't doing the extra writing activities?
  14. Does anyone else use this or have you used this before? Maybe it's just me(and my kids) but the lessons seem so L..O...N...G.. It seems we are all dreading grammar and it's taking forever to get through a lesson. Did you do the whole lesson every day or split it up? Did you do the extra activities? Any help would be appreciated. It seems o.k. and I don't want to drop it yet but we are are feeling a bit overwhelmed... If you did drop it..what did you replace it with and are you happy?
  15. We just recently went through this because my husband's company changed plans and it got to be outrageous. We joined Samaratins Ministries and pay $320 a month. And although we feel comfortable with it-my husband just wanted to *MAKE SURE* we were covered so we got a high deductible plan that doesn't start covering until you hit $10K. So, if something happened and Samaratin's for some reason(which I don't believe would happen) didn't follow through with paying we would be covered over 10K. So with both we pay $479 a month. So, really we are paying Samaratin's to cover from $300.00-$10K and then over that we have Humana for $10k and above.
  16. Thank you so much Faithmanor for that wonderful intro to pigs! One more question, is there a specific time of year we should purchase the pig? Is it too late now or say a month from now?
  17. Faithmanor- Not to hijack this thread but gosh you are a bundle of information! Can I come over and just learn from you?:001_smile: I was curious about the pig...could you explain your setup a little bit and is the pig in grassy or wooded area? What about fencing? Does the pig need shelter? We just purchased 5 acres of wooded land and want to have some animals. I'd love to get a pig but don't know where to start.
  18. How long does each lesson take? Also, I noticed they had practice books and cd's..does that cut down much on the teaching time? How teacher intensive is this program? Does it include writing and is it enough writing? (I'm looking at 3rd grade)..
  19. Thanks! That was exactly what I was looking for!
  20. Do you have a link for the Real Science 4 kids online class? All I can find is the actual hard copy curriculum.
  21. Thank you Pongo but that looks to be middle school and up..I need 3rd grade.
  22. Do you have a recommendation for a really good online science class? One that is thorough and is continual. We've done a couple that skip around subjects and are only one class per subject and it's introducing but not teaching, ywim? This would be for 3rd grade. Thanks!
  23. I was just over on the Sonlight forums and several of the posters were warning another poster that Core 3 was too much for a 3rd grader(even an advanced one). One of the mom's even stated her child was reading at a high school level(but was 9) and it was a challenge for him. Have any of you used Core 3 with a 3rd grader and would you share your experience? I was all set to get this but now I'm hesitating. What has me baffled is although we've never used Sonlight before I've always had my boys read the readers and they seem to corelate with grade level(ie. Core 2 was perfect for my second grade readers)...any thoughts?
  24. Are the teachers guides pretty self explanatory or do I need to sit down and read through the entire manual first to try and teach it? We have used Rod and Staff the past two years, so I'm used to the teachers manual given for that curriculum. Can you tell me what's it's like to teach MCT and are the workbooks pretty self explanatory to the kids? I guess I'm mostly wondering how teacher intensive it is vs. CLE or Rod and Staff.
