  1. I read that 5 million direct deposits were going to be made today with stimulus checks.
  2. I ran the calculator yesterday, so I knew ahead of time. At least it's only $283 less. My aunt won't get anything for her son because he just turned 18 in October. Stinks.
  3. We did a K curriculum this fall, so I'm calling my daughter a K'er. She just turned 4, and according to one online test I took, she's reading at a 4th grade level (words only - comprehension has not been tested yet). We will work on 1st grade material next year, skipping the actual reading teaching, but concentrating on things like spelling, alphabetical order (even though I think she kind of gets this already), writing, etc., until we get to a point where I can actually teach her something. (When she was evaluated in November, she was reading on a mid 1st grade level and her comprehension was on the same level.) Since she is only 4, I hesitate to move her up too fast, so for now we will prepare for our 1st grade year, and I'll just keep letting her pick out books from the library to practice her reading. In Michigan we don't have to report anything, but since my daughter's birthday is early in the calendar year, she technically would not be eligible for PS Kindergarten until September 2009, when she's almost 6. How bored would she be??? :glare:
  4. I have been struggling with something similar myself. I really want to start SOTW with my 4-year-old who is going to be doing 1st grade stuff next year. However, I also have a 3-year-old, so I was debating on waiting on it for another year or so. What I have come up with is this: I'm going to take a slower, deeper approach, doing lots of activities, reading lots of outside literature just to make sure that the 3-year-old gets something out of it, too. Ideally, I can stretch this out for a year and a half if we're schooling approximately 9 months. I'm not sure how this approach will work out, since I've not really gotten into mapping it out yet, but with the number of sick days we had this year and how behind we are now, I'm sure stretching it out won't be an issue.
  5. We're in the Metro Detroit area, also. (I grew up in SW Michigan, but I'm here now!) My 4-year-old is going to be doing some 1st grade stuff starting in the fall. We're doing kindergarten through Calvert right now, but she taught herself to read last fall using Starfall. (When tested in November at 3-1/2 years old, she was on a mid 1st grade reading level.) That makes it really hard for us to continue using an all-in-one curriculum, even though it is a very nice program. So, starting in the fall we're going to be doing a modified WTM approach. I already have my science and history materials, and I'm really looking forward to getting started. My 3-year-old daughter is also going to be starting something a little more structured, but I'm not sure what yet. She said she wants to learn to read, so I'm trying to find something that will suit her learning style. Feel free to contact me if any of you would like to get together sometime.
