  1. My husband's grandmothers both can speak Polish, but I don't think that they really do anymore. Maybe we should start with Latin and then move into Polish later on. Spanish is not really useful where I am - at least not as useful as Middle Eastern languages would be. However, I do understand that it is a very useful language. For those of you who study Spanish, do you go with Latin American Spanish?
  2. Thank you so much for the insight. I think I might pull the demo out again and see if my 4-year-old likes it. She likes doing things on the computer.
  3. I am looking for a language that my whole family can learn. I'm thinking I will start learning first since my girls are so young, and then eventually they will be learning it, too. I'm just not sure where to start. Latin seems like the beginning of it all to me. I think it would be a great language to have a better grasp of. I am a medical transcriptionist, so I already am familiar with many roots, prefixes, and suffixes, although I know there are tons more. Polish would be a great fit, since my husband is Polish and my kidlets are half. His grandparents all spoke fluently, and I think it would be good for our family to take advantage of that heritage. Spanish is popular among my girls. They are big fans of Diego (esp. my older one, since she wants to be an animal rescuer just like Diego when she grows up!), so they're constantly calling for help in Spanish or telling each other to climb in Spanish. My oldest can count to 10 and they both know many colors. She is also always asking me, "How do you say ??? in Spanish?" I've never taken Spanish, so I can't really help her! So, give me your votes!
  4. I've tried the demo of Rosetta Stone before, and it seems like a really good program. I'm wondering at what age I can expect it to be useful for my children. I am considering getting it for myself, but if it's going to be several years before it is to be used for them, I think I might wait.
  5. When we were in our apartment several years ago, our vacuum died and we used our Dirt Devil hand vac for the main floor for a few months. You'd be surprised how much power that little thing has.
  6. A laminate flooring with a sealant/glue under it would be my suggestion. You can get a great wood look, with the ease of a quick mop and a quick sweep. We have considered it, too, but have not decided what we're doing yet.
  7. Looks good to me! Where did you get your daughter's name?
  8. I like the attachments on ours, but we used to have a Dirt Devil hand vac. That thing was awesome, and it had a really long cord! I got rid of it when we got our new vacuum, because I never used it anymore.
  9. Has anyone used this program at all? According to the Rainbow Resource catalog, it's for ages 4 to 6. My daughter is 4, and I was thinking of using it starting in the fall. However, I can't find a lot of reviews of it and I'm not sure which books will be useful and which ones won't. Any opinions anyone?
  10. While researching, I found this page. Ignore all the soccer stuff and just skip down to the different fractures that your daughter might have sustained. Good luck!
  11. Sometimes they do an Aircast boot. I see that a lot when I'm typing pediatric orthopedic reports. Very rarely do I see a hard cast, but I've only been typing for about seven months. Also, my husband broke two bones in his hand and had a half-cast. This was so that the doctor could keep a close eye on the progress in followup appointments. However, he also had pins placed, so that might have something to do with it, too, since he has to check for infection at the pin sites. (I know this little side story doesn't really help you, does it???) Do you know which bone or bones she broke yet?
  12. RoughCollie: One of those days, huh? I've had one myself. My 3-year-old didn't have a nap and wanted to "go potty" for... probably ever! She kicked, screamed, and cried when I took her back up to her room after getting off and on the potty for about 20 minutes. Then she kept saying, "I'm starting to pee!" But she wasn't... About the word people: I used to have to have a dictionary next to me while reading. Even if I knew something by context I had to look up the definition, then mark it in the dictionary. I've broken that habit for the most part, but sometimes I will jot a word or two down to look up later. I do that when watching TV sometimes, too.
  13. I have not read through all of the comments, as I'm getting ready to head up to bed. However, here are my thoughts: First and foremost, I do not think you are husband bashing. You are only giving us the facts as they pertain to the situation. (If you had been bashing, it probably would have been more like, "I cannot believe that my husband is acting like this, etc.") Second, I really do think that he may need some professional help, as I noticed several people stated. If he does not want to jump right into counseling, maybe you can at least encourage him to ask his primary care physician about it. He or she might be able to direct him toward a course of therapy. Sometimes it takes someone removed from the situation to encourage people to seek the help they need. Also, being that he is a stepfather, maybe he's just not used to that kind of situation yet. You need to put yourself in his shoes, and try to imagine that you entered his family and they did things different than what you're used to. I'm sure that given time, and possibly therapy if it's needed, he will come to realize that you're just being a normal, healthy, nurturing mother. Maybe you should see if he's open to going out to dinner sometime without the kids to talk it over so that you can share your opinions with one another in a neutral territory. I think that when you're out like that, it's easier to have a rational conversation, not to mention the fact that you'll both have had time to formulate what you want to convey. Whatever course of action you take, I wish you luck! I'll keep you and your family in my prayers!
  14. Oh, I forgot - thanks for the audiobook link! I was just telling my hubby I wanted to get the girls to start listening to some audiobooks.
  15. Usually I'm taking a quick break from whatever else I'm doing. Right now I'm getting ready to head up to bed and work on my start date for next fall.
  16. While doing my own homework regarding SOTW and whether or not to use it for 1st grade next year, I was able to get a copy of the guide from the library. She could always look into that and then jot down a few books from each chapter that she might be interested in. Or, as I think someone else mentioned, if any of you have already used it you could at least mention a few of your favorite books that stick out in your head. I'm sure I'll be back before fall to find out which books are the best and which ones are not worth the effort of obtaining.
  17. I'm looking at the pictures of the house, and this is how they do it: They don't have to pay for things like Chuck E. Cheese's! :lurk5:
  18. Stimulus Calculator Schedule of Payments (Please keep in mind it's based on how you received your tax refund. We used Turbo Tax, but we still had our refund direct deposited, so that's also how we received our stimulus payment. It just hit our bank this morning.) Frequently Asked Questions I hope this helps! I did all of this research yesterday. :)
  19. She is getting just over $400. She is getting a portion of her single, but nothing for her son. For those of you wondering about your rebate, if you take line 52 and line 57 of your taxes (form 1040) and add them together, that's what you'll expect back for your single/couple portion. Then add your kids in at $300 each. This is how I got my number, and it was correct, except that they gave me an extra 70 cents. :D
  20. Did you have your tax refund direct deposited? Or mailed? If you had it mailed or received a check from someplace like H&R Block, your stimulus check will be mailed. If you had your refund direct deposited, you will get a direct deposit. My grandma has to actually wait until the end of June I think.
  21. I read that 5 million direct deposits were going to be made today with stimulus checks.
  22. I ran the calculator yesterday, so I knew ahead of time. At least it's only $283 less. My aunt won't get anything for her son because he just turned 18 in October. Stinks.
