  1. Most of our toys are in the finished basement, on the floor. I am looking for cabinet type furniture, so I can close doors do not have to look at them.

I do not care for fabric bins, those do not hold up well here, but am willing if it makes the area look more organized.

This area is where we hs and the clutter is driving me nuts.

Unfortunately, we do not live near an Ikea. I do not mind cheap furniture, but dh would prefer something that is on the higher quality side that will last.

    Any suggestions??

  2. I don't check this part of the board very frequently, but glad to see this post.

We are in the same boat, so I am going to check out WS for next year. Have never heard of it, but will be looking into it. I was considering Meaningful Composition too.

I really like WWW2, but it seems to go so slow/easy. DD is perfectly happy with easy, but I want her to be challenged.

  3. This is definitely the gamble one takes.

My dh uses a cpap. We have a $1000 individual/$2000 family deductible. The price to get his mask replaced (which he needs each month) is $10 if we don't have insurance. It's close to $50 if we do use the insurance. :001_huh: That's absurd. So basically, so long as we're not maxed out on our deductible for our coverage year, we pay the cash rate and don't go through insurance. It's all quite a sad game they play, and one has to learn the rules and use them to your advantage. I don't understand why it's ok to have different rates depending on how the item is paid for. It just seems dishonest to me.

In your situation, yes that makes way more sense to not turn it into insurance! In her case, if you are going to pay a few thousand either way, it would seem to be more sensible to have it count toward deductible.

The pricing differences are absurd, but it has to be made up for somewhere for those who have medical treatment then disappear and never pay, as well as Medicare reimbursement, which is very, very low (in surgery anyway).

  4. I am so sorry. This is so sad. I am very glad that she seems to be at peace.

I have not gone through this, but if I were in your position, I would offer to make meals for the family. Even asking other friends to help too, and you deliver them. Also, just a thought, if she is weak, maybe you can write down notes or journaling for her that she may want to leave for her loved ones.

I also would not wait. Towards the end, she may not want visitors at all, and just spend the time with family.

  5. High deductibles are no fun, we have one too.

Just in my own opinion, I would not pay cash to avoid the deductible, even with a discount. What if something else comes up this year? Your out of pocket will likely be met with this surgery, and it is still early in the year.

Around here, hospitals seem to be very cooperative with payments, even if it's a little bit here and there. And many forgive some of the amounts too, depending on need.

  6. EIC is earned income credit. The decree doesn't address EIC...only claiming a child as a dependent. We can only claim EIC if she doesn't.

Not sure if this is even applicable, but if the kids are young, it may be worth it to get the decree modified (or clarified?) if this is something you will encounter each year. If it were me, I would NOT want to deal with this every single year.

It doesn't seem right that you should have to check in yearly to see if she's claiming it or not.

  7. One option is to change the seatbelts.

    http://wescoperformance.stores.yahoo.net/conversion-van-seat-belt.html

Another option is to change the seats in the van. This may be pricey and may not be helpful. Here is one example:

    http://www.mobilityengineering.com.au/van-seats.htm

Another option is to take the van to a dealer and ask about how to make the van more safe for children.

The OP has to work with what she has. I'm sure she knows all about child safety in cars and how effective different types of seat belts are. Saying that the van is not a safe option is not helpful when her husband is buying the van today. Vans have not been made illegal for children to ride in. Let's find solutions that could help her.

However, she was considering using a booster in the back with a lap belt only. The posters (including myself) that were pointing out the fact that that option is not safe, ARE trying to be helpful.

  8. The only safe option sounds like a 5 point booster or car seat. And those only go up to so many pounds. What will you do when she outgrows a 5 point?

I am sorry, but I would absolutely refuse to purchase a vehicle without shoulder belts, UNLESS they were installed before using it.

I hope your dh thinks this through carefully before making a decision. It wouldn't be as safe for anyone in the back.

  9. One of my front teeth is a dental implant due to a car accident. I would really look into this option. It looks very natural. It was a long process, almost a year from start to finish to wait for healing before the tooth can be attached. I am very glad I went this route.

I had mine done by an oral surgeon, but my current dentist does them in his office.

I am not familiar with any other options.

  10. :iagree:

The chair seats should come off easily; they should be screwed on from underneath. Are you looking online only, or are these in a store where you can see them in person?

My in-laws have dining room chairs with cloth seats. They have a couple of clear plastic seat covers that have a couple of straps that snap around the back of the seat. The youngest grandkids sit on those chairs. You could look for those. Here's some solid color ones. Here are clear vinyl.

Those are a great idea! I didn't know something like that existed.

I vote for the first table. LOVE the style of the chairs!

Have you checked with the manufacturer to see if the chairs are available without upholstry? If they do not, I think the links above are a great solution to the fabric chairs.

  11. Um, I'd be taking her to the emergency room if she has severe pain. Boiling water burns are horrendously painful (I've done it to myself), but the thing is that these are her HANDS. I would take this so very much more serious because of the location of the burn. I wouldn't want to mess around with long term damage to her hands.

As a former ER, nurse :iagree:

This could blister up quickly, and she needs treated now.

  12. The red. I can't believe not more people are mentioning this. My mom has one and it washes the life out of clothes on the lowest ring cycle. It ruined one of my sweaters. It came out looking like it was washed at least 25 times already. It was fairly new before that.:glare:

I'll give another example. I accidently got a bag! of coughdrops in it with my clothes. It washes and rings so vigorously we could not make out what was even washed with the clothes, only a horrible fine sticky lint on everything! My machine would still have the wrappers left, though limp and falling apart. I would NEVER get the LG toploader. Unless you don't care about ruining your clothes.

Yes, this is a big downside to the washer, but I assumed the majority of the HE washers would have a rough spin cycle in order to decrease dry time. Perhaps it is only LG? I did consider returning it, but I had a huge hassle with Sears with this purchase anyway, I do not want to step foot in there again. I am just going to start decreasing the spin speed and see if that helps. I also get the majority of our clothes second hand, so I'm not out much if anything gets ruined.

    Regarding the cough drops....yikes!!

  13. If you want a no-nonsense old-style washing machine that does what you want not what it wants, go with Speed Queen. We tried one of the new fangled washing machines, but found that it wouldn't do what we wanted it to do. It seemed to override our settings choices based upon its "programming".

After a week or so, we returned it and bought a Speed Queen top loader. The SQ is big, rugged and simple. It has a rotary electro-mechanical controller like washing machines used to have. No electronic controls here. The tub is very large, and it's built like a tank.

Though I do really like my LG that I just posted about, I kind of wish I would have considered a Speed Queen. I was in a hurry since our washer died, and did not shop around (other than some phone calls price comparing). I found it irritating that there were VERY few no-nonsense washers to choose from, at least where I went. My last washer lasted 11 years, and I was shocked at how fancy they are now.
