  1. I do not like the guides before Preparing, and actually once said Imwould never purchase HOD again. And here we are using Preparing this year (and liking it). My biggest issue was with the message board, and a private email I received from the author Carrie (5 yrs ago!). I was new to homeschooling, and my 5yr old was struggling with the history. She basically ripped me apart and said I was the problem. I was a somewhat insecure homeschooler then and her words made me want to run from homeschooling. I realize now how very wrong she was in her "thoughts". Not cool.

  2. I have not used HOD yet, but my plan is to use CtoC in 2 years. The curriculum looks great and even though the science looks light that will work for us since we usually do more then one science curriculum anyway. The reason I am posting is I want to mention the one thing that has bothered me about HOD so much that I have not used them before and even though my plan is to use them in 2 years I might change......the forum board is down right creepy. I feel like I am in the twilight zone there. Everyone is all smiles and sings the praises of HOD and Carrie. it feels like a cult. A few months ago I posted about the price of the new HS Geography curriculum and it was removed (I mentioned CBD by accident in the post) and when I questioned why it was removed I got a chastising email from Carrie and then she informs me quality curriculum will come with a premium price tag and I can use less if I choose to. Needless to say it has left a bad taste. If I do decide to follow the plan, I will be using HOD (used... because a used quality curriculum is cheaper and HOD does not need my money) with my eyes wide open.

  3. We tried SOTW in first and second and it did not go well. We are now starting the cycle in fourth. You can add in the Usborne encyclopedia a la WTM to beef it up. Honestly, just like I am not a fan of labeling a child by grade level, I don't think curriculum should have specific grade levels attached. It should be about concepts taught. I know many who are using SOTW for fourth grade and up. Read a sample and then determine if it is a good level for your child, if you need to add a little to it, or it won't be a good fit. Best of luck.

  4. After he left diner he started thinking about what he wished he would have said. He said that he was so shocked and taken off guard. Not one question was asked about potential job. He had already had a great meeting with 5 men from potential new job. He got a call from owner saying that the meeting(before diner meeting) went great and he would be calling Tues(today) to let him know. Potential employee thinks the diner meeting has blown the whole thing. But, like others have said, why would he want the job in the first place(except that it's a lot more $$, better location, and cool job).ugh!

  5. Does it have to be a curriculum?

When the first WTM came out, most of these curricula did not exist. Sonlight was out, and maybe TOG, but that was pretty much it for this category. And WTM said how to do this yourself, and that's pretty much what I did, and it was SO FUN. For ME.

Because, see, I got to pick books to read. I used SOTW, and picked some books from the AG (which is very good) that coordinated with the history lessons, and then I dug up other really great books that I had read as a kid or that someone had told me about or that looked interesting, and we read and read and read and read. And it was SO good, and SO fun, and we were not tied to someone else's lists or schedules.

If you read early homeschooling books, they talk about being able to go on field trips in the middle of the school year, and following rabbit trails, and doing serious nature study, and lots of things like that that you can't possibly do in school. Let's not miss out on that by overreliance on a curriculum. It is so much more satisfying, and you can teach with far more conviction, if you do this yourself and enjoy it.

    thanks for sharing this!

  6. We used one of the history based theme books, because my boys love history. I didn't like the checklists, and more specifically I didn't like what was on the checklists. I thought in the time we used the book their writing assignments were not as good as their writing before we started IEW. A little too formulaic. I could have continued with the book without all the checklists/banned words/dressups etc but I think those play a big part in the books. I can see how IEW would be good for some students though, just not mine. :001_smile:

    :iagree: same experience.
