  1. Did you ever enroll with Ashley Porter? Any feedback? I’m considering enrolling my daughter for Geometry. Thanks
  2. Anyone taken the Narnia (English) class at TPS? Or has anyone had Mrs. Talbert? Any feedback?

  4. How many levels did you do in Barton before calling it a day? We are finishing up Level 8 with my 12 y/o ds and I’m wondering if I need to do Levels 9 & 10. He’s reading well, albeit slowly. And he’s also in a rigorous Latin program through Lukeion so I know word roots are covered. Thoughts? Keep going or is 8 levels enough?
  5. Just finished Bunnicula and loved it. Planning to read Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but what else? Kids are ages 10 & 8.
  6. My oldest loved it age 11 and is suggesting I read it to his siblings now (ages 8 & 10). Too early?
  7. Thank you everyone! We may try a few, based on the recommendations here. 😊
  8. We are in the beginning of Level 7 and while DS10 is able to read the passages fairly easily, he still forgets some of the spelling rules and therefore his spelling isn't great. We stepped away from Barton during the summer so we've been away from it for at least 3-4 months. When I gave him the Book 6 post test to see what he remembered he missed so many spelling words I was tempted to go back through all of 5 and 6 again. But then I think, it's hard for ME to remember all the spelling rules and really as long as he's reading, does it really matter? Is spelling THAT important? We both HATE Barton and I really just want to be done with it but will go back and review the rules again if need be. Thoughts?
  9. Thank you! We read The Secret Garden and A Christmas Carol last year and loved them! There are some other good ones on these lists. Please keep the recommendations coming!
  10. Here is my list of possible read alouds for 5th grade and I have way too many! Help me narrow it down please - probably to about 15 total. Which would you save for later? Or which is better as an audiobook or as an independent read? Or which one did you just NOT like? Thanks! 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Anne of Avonlea (we loved Anne of Green Gables last year) Around the World in 80 Days Black Beauty Call of the Wild The Family Under the Bridge From the Mixed Up Files of Hound of the Baskervilles Heidi Holes Hoot The Incredible Journey Island of the Blue Dolphins Legend of Sleepy Hollow A Little Princess Little Women The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane Mountain Born Mrs. Frisby and the rats of NIMH My Side of the Mountain The Penderwicks Peter Pan Pollyanna Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm Robinson Crusoe Swiss Family Robinson Tale of Despereaux Treasure Island Understood Betsy The Wheel on the School Wonder Wind in the Willows
  11. I am trying to make a read aloud list for this year and I would like it to include a few classics. What are your top 5-10 must reads for 5th grade?
  12. Thanks for your reply! What did you think of the class itself? Was it worth it?
  13. Reviving this thread because I'm curious as to whether the original poster enrolled with one of the above teachers listed. We are in the same boat this year.
  14. Jana Lake or Mary Ketch? I'm looking at the Adventures in Writing Class for my rising 5th grader but we weren't thrilled with last year's teacher so I'd prefer to have a teacher recommendation this time. TIA!
  15. And I should add he never sits in on family read aloud anymore but recently did when we read his last recommendation - The Phantom of the Opera.
