  1. My girlfriend doesn't drink at all so I was surprised to see this text.

"I am at the soccer game...last regular wine of season...wrap up this weekend"

Now, if it was me at the soccer game it could have read, "....last regular whine of season..." and that would have been true.

  2. Please don't judge the rest of Canada based on your experience in Montreal.

Head into Montreal with a full tank of gas, and drive back to Ontario before night fall.  If you take a tour, make sure ahead of time the tour is in English.  There are some friendly Montrealer's but many can come across rude, but they don't think they are being rude.  My SIL felt it was like visiting with a very blunt drunk, not that everyone walks around drunk but everyone feels free to say whatever they want when they want.  Does that make sense?

Like Starr said, Ottawa is beautiful!

  3. As the mother of a bipolar young adult.  I send you warm hugs.  You are not alone.  In the beginning I felt so alone but I found  a wonderful facebook group of parents who also have child who are bipolar.  They are the ones I go to frequently.  I didn't have time to add a counseling session for myself into my time table, but my group has held me up in prayer, cheered with me over every single baby-step and encouraged me when I felt lost in despair.  They have taught me it was ok to take time for myself and by doing so I was stronger to help my dd.  I pray you find a wonderful support network like I have.  If you ever need to chat, feel free to message me.

  4. If you have a sub pump, include that into your list of things it needs to power.  We have two panels in our house.  When the power goes out, my husband can start the generator and everything we considered essential is wired into one panel.  Only the items in that panel have power.  I love our generator!

  5. That would be ideal. Which section of study skills are you helping out with? I haven't paid so much attention to all that since I've been trying to help build the Destinos course as well. My dd is signed up for the Wednesday Study Skills, Intro to Logic and Chemistry classes as well.

Op, sorry for taking this off-topic, lol! What class is your daughter interested in taking?

I am in the Wednesday Study Skills class.  :)

  6. Hi! I live in Canada also.  Some of the highways are toll highways.  So, track your route on google maps or something else to make sure you can miss those if you don't want to have to pay.  If you do use them, they take a picture of your license plate, make sure you are watching for your bill ASAP because some friends have had some serious "late fees" and things ended up in collections really quick!   For most of Ontario, it seems the kids go back to school on Sept 8th.  Traffic is bad around the Greater Toronto Area also refered to as the GTA.  Make sure you have medical travel insurance.

  7. Susan, I can't remember when I read your third volume if you did this or not.  But please try to calm down over excited parents who are pulling their children out of the school system.  When we pulled our kids from the system they were in grades 2 & 4.  I made all the typical mistakes.

    - tried to recreate school at home

    - started my kids at the grade they were supposed to be in stead of assess to see where they actually were

    - bought all the new shiny things and gave 3/4 of it away afterwards

    - had my kids doing work from 9-3 everyday just like the school kids here have classes

    - you name it I probably made that mistake.

  8. abba12 - thank you for venting.   Apparently, many of us needed that! :)

    Here's my vent:

22 years of being married to a dairy farmer.  Cows must be milked twice a day 12 hours apart, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  We milk at 5:30AM and 5:30pm.  This doesn't change.  We arranged our wedding around milking times.  Any big event around milking times.  Heck my foolish FIL wouldn't tell anyone he was having a heart attack until milking was done that morning. (yes, he was stupid to do this)

My family attempts to plan every single family dinner for 5pm at a house 45 mins away from our house.  I've started to not bother saying anything other than to send my regrets.  Now I'm getting "labeled" anti-social and told I need to try harder to see my family.  People this is how I feed my family and pay my bills get with the program!!!!

  9. I've only just begun using it, however, I'm absolutely adoring it.  I've tried almost all the others out there and there are features I like about each but never fully embraced any of them.  This one seems to be it for me.  For others, another option is better.  Since it's free, why not give it a try and see?

I will say, watch the tutorials before you "do" each section.  It helped me figure things out quickly.  I also found a great tip from a blog about adding html code in the lesson plan boxes - you can make it look anyway you want or add pictures, links or even videos.  My favorite feature is bumping to the next day if you don't get to it and it doesn't mess up the rest of the schedule.   I also like how simple it is.  Some love HomeSchoolTracker but it is so confusing and featured filled, that I can't figure it out easily.  I'm also not sure what others are referring to about it being "rigid".  So far, I've found it very easy to adjust and change.

Good luck finding what works for you.

ETA: I had dismissed this one for years because of its looks and ads.  Now, I have no idea why.  I was addicted to "pretty" but realized I need simple and functional.

Lucidity, can you share the blog where you found that "tip" or explain the tip for us.  I'm loving Skedtrack, did you know you can import and export lesson plans other people have created.  I'd be happy to share my lesson plans with others.

  10. As a farmers wife, I totally get this concept and it doesn't bother me one bit! LOL

I actually have a tank of frozen sperm in my bedroom.

It's of the bovine variety though.

Last week, I got to add to the list of "conversations that I never thought I'd have."

My dh brought the tank into the kitchen. Dd17 saw it and said, "Oh, is the sem*n guy coming today?"

I said, "No, not the sem*n guy. It's the liquid nitrogen guy."

    Dd 17 "Oh, okay. :)"

And my friends are all subdivision people so they find the fact that I have a tank of squigglers in the bedroom oddly fascinating."You actually sleep with that in your bedroom!"

    "Yeah, but they're frozen!"

  11. Twice Freed (St. John) -- Christian themes

Ides of April (Ray) -- Christian themes; well-written; may appeal more to an older student/adult

Beyond the Desert Gate (Ray) -- sequel -- new setting, new characters, with the protagonist from Ides only marginally on the side

Eagle of the Ninth (Sutcliff) -- Britain under Roman occupation, if that time frame/setting works

The Historical Novels website has nice lists of YA novels written in the past 60 years: Biblical Times and Ancient Middle East; Ancient Rome; Roman Britain

My son is on book 2 of Sutcliff's series.  He is enjoying it.
