If it's snowing, it means the barometer has dropped. Cows are more likely to calve when the barometer drops. And if they calve in a snowstorm, they can't get their calves dried off and they die. Or they make it but get pneumonia etc, plus frostbitten ears! We have a lamb with frostbitten ears this year. The wool ram "wasn't fertile". Yeah, right.

Never would have guessed!  Are the animals in barn at a night or outside?

If it's not snowing and they're all bedded down, I don't go out again. Dh will go out at 5:00. If it's snowing, like last night, I'll go out again around 3:00.

why does the snow change things?  (Totally clueless about taking care of cows)

  3. When I make lunch, I try to cut up fruit and veggies on a plate for everyone to snack on so they don’t go bad. For some reason, people will eat fruit and veggies if I prepare them, but they won’t do it themselves.

Unfortunately, that  is not stopping us from also eating junk food.

Thanks for all the advice.  I'm working with a lawyer now, waiting for a response from him.  This whole thing is a nightmare.

I’m so sorry this happened to you.  From the title, I initially thought this was going to be a light hearted post about being home alone for an hour or two during the quarantine.  I’m so sorry that wasn’t the case.

This happened to a friend of mine.  She didn’t know where her dh and dc were for a long time, so she couldn’t have him served by the court.  Long story short, he ended up with custody because she didn’t fight hard enough for her rights.

Make sure your lawyer has experience in this kind of situation and don’t let your dh smooth talk you into any agreement outside of court.

  5. The other Cutco product that I highly recommend is the vegetable peeler.

My first one accidentally got thrown away, and I tried lots of other brands, but ended up buying another one.

Gotta say, the suggestion that one might want to file a police report over toilet paper "theft" by a roommate--a ROOMMATE, not a stranger brandishing a knife, is one of the scariest things I've read on here about CV and what it's doing to people.

Why would you not consider this theft?  They each supplied their own toilet paper and food.

So sweet of her to be worried about food safety, lol.

Does your dd still have to be roommates with her? I hope not!

They aren’t going back to school this semester and they aren’t rooming together next year.  Thank goodness!

  8. I live in York County.  We pay $8k in property taxes altogether on a 2400 sq ft house.  My in-laws were paying $12k and $16k (two different families), all three of us in different school districts in York County.  Their homes were bigger than ours, but not much bigger.  (Both have moved to smaller homes, partly because of the school taxes)

  9. Pa is quite a large state.  What area are you thinking?  I’m south central.  I think we may have had 6-8” of snow total this winter, we had a very mild winter.  Haven’t had to wear a coat most days this year.

My area is as you describe- rural, but close to amenities.  I’m an hour from Baltimore & Harrisburg.  Two hours from Philly & DC.  People commute to all of those places for work from here.

Re taxes.  We have one of the highest gas taxes in the country.  There’s about a $0.40 per gallon difference between gas here and down in MD, more of a difference if you go east to Jersey (and they get full service!).  When we first moved to Pa, I felt like we got a different tax bill in the mail every day from lots of different places.  Here we are taxed by:

    local - income based
(local - used to charge per capita too)
school - property based and can impose per capita fees for special projects
    county - property based
    county - income based
    state - income based

So, your taxes are really dependent on your locality and school district.  Our school district boasts they have the lowest millage rate, but they leave out that they also have the highest assessments too.

eta:  medically, we are very fortunate to have so many options within an hour or two drive, if those services are necessary.  Hopkins, Hersey, CHOP, etc....

  10. So roommate finally got back to dd this afternoon.  She says she took the toilet paper by accident.  She said she didn’t take the freezer food home because she was concerned that it had gone bad while they were gone (for a week of spring break) so she threw it out.  Interesting, she was only concerned about the food that hadn’t been opened yet.  Then she said she threw it because she has tried of seeing dd’s food take up half the freezer space.

She is agreeing to pay for it, but only venmoed  $20.

Did the roommate think your DD wasn't coming back for stuff and had already gone back to your house. Because I can understand taking it under those circumstances with the idea of repaying or replenishing once they both got back to the apartment. But I would also expect her to have asked.

I don’t know why she would think dd wouldn’t come back to get her school supplies.  And, she could have asked dd if that was her intention.  Still is ghosting dd.

    Ugh. That’s awful. 😞

If you need to find toilet paper, you might try the big box hardware stores. They tend to get overlooked but are often well stocked (ours still had lots of bleach, Lysol etc as of a few days ago).

Everyone told me to go to Home Depot for toilet paper.  I made it there on Friday afternoon- shortly after they ran out of toilet paper.  The manager said that they are not expecting another shipment for a couple months because the suppliers have been wiped clean.  (Haha!)

I did get four packs at our local grocery store.  I was surprised to find it full, but I happened to have good timing - they had just restocked.

Now that everyone will be home from school and working at home, we’ll go through it faster than usual I’m assuming.
