Here's a good one:bigear:
"Jason and Bob have 193 marbles altogether. Bob has 47 marbles fewer than Jason. If Jason gives 15 marbles to Bob, how many more marbles will Jason have than Bob?" – CWP 3 (original edition #19 pg.10)

Did not use a literature program for MCT level 1, but I did order 'Ruby' http://www.mosdospress.com/index.html and intend to use it now, and through MCT level 2.

I think these are the 'Singapore' math books the O.P. was asking about-

You know I thought ours was driven by Arithmetic, but the hungry alligator eaats History.

The only thing I'm afraid of with the Japanese program is that it doesn't appear to have an answer key or too much hand holding for the teacher. Thanks, Stripe, for the recommendation. Didn't even hear of that one before.

Thread bump plus two cents.
Perhaps some shiny baubles form the craft store; lay out a row of ten; then add three to row below; and say “if you add 3 to the group of ten, you'll get thirteen, which means three above ten".
Just a modification of an exercise using candy found in Mathematics for Little Ones by Migachyov.
Another book mentions that we remember what we think about (:tongue_smilie:), be aware of candy so sweet, toy so shiny, that we forget the math.http://www.amazon.com/Why-Dont-Stude...2064563&sr=8-1

Ok, the title is just a play on a 4 book math series sub-title. .
Picked up the first two in the series, pretty traditional take on arithmetic. Using the "Fractions and More" book for Spring/Summer.

We used this version http://www.criticalthinking.com/getProductDetails.do?code=c&id=04301
First child started it her 5th year, and never made it to the end before we just started reading books... Her brother has turned 5yr and has gone through it about as far as he will go... the version we have has an excess of 'critical thinking' sentences and after a while it gets old.
With only '36 teaching alphabet' and attention to not use capitols or other punctuation removes confusion with unknown symbols- focus on sounds written symbols (letters) make.
DD got further along in the program than Ds so maybe picking up a different reading program http://www.prometheantrust.org/usshop.htm

but why don't you think of that 3 as 30 since it is in the 10's place?
Brenda
Maybe think of 30 as 3 ten bundles, that cannot be shared until they are unbundled into ones- good opening to refresh the placeholder function of zero.

The Elementary Mathematics for Teachers (Parker and Baldridge) text has been a good math purchase. It is not textbook-boring and is almost a pleasant read as a matter of fact. Recommend adding to your library.
No opinion on the 'hand book for Primary mathematics teachers'.

Some things I like
a.more “oh, I see”
b.less “ugh, I don’t get it”
c.familiar topics
d.clear order of topics
e.fundamental topics
f.scaffolding of topics
g.appearance of workbook and texts
h.Super Secret Math Techniques
Some things I don’t like
i.Easy to just ‘do’ the workbook problems
j.Pre-work the lesson beforehand
k.Rarely do ‘j.’
l.No text book answer key- note ‘j.’
m.No Super Secret Math Techniques
For those researching these books: http://science.kennesaw.edu/~twatanab/QuEST07.pdf

At the risk of sounding like a math junkie :D I'm intrigued by the Tokyo Shoseki series. I read the older threads about it but I'd love to hear some updated thoughts. :bigear:
Hi, DD is at the tail-end of 3b in the series, what are you looking for I would be happy to contribute 'two cents'? :)

Snickerdoodle, way to make hay! :patriot:
We are just now getting into CWP3 challenging problems, and for us they have more oomph than the problems of the first two books- no contest.
Fractalgal thanks for the solutions,
Mommy4ever we are not batting a thousand here either, but its good fun;)
