  1. We read "Around the World in 80 Pages"

when my son was in 3rd grade. I put up a big world map and printed small blank ones(for free online) for him to tract our journey. He loved it. Really simple. I tried to add in fairy tales from each region where I could. We aren't crafty but you could easily add on a craft and cooking a dish. This was one of our most memorable activities. Simply done but my son retained a ton.

  2. I admit I am failing to spark an interest in science in my history loving boy.  He does enjoy reading about scientific discoveries, scientists, math related to science.  Perhaps this will ignite some interest?? He is on the older age for the study but he loves to read and be read to. Any opinions? How much religious content is there in the guide? The books all seem secular.  How long do you spend on the lessons?  What are the Story Hour CD's like? Is the Experiment book needed? Timeline?

FYI We have looked at Story of Science(Hakim) but he just doesn't like her style.

    Thanks

  3. I use to worry about this too. I was speaking to the librarian about picture books recently. My son loves them and I had the notion of "baby" books. While we spoke the librarian explained to me there are many picture books written on a higher level than beginner chapter books. She convinced me they are so many not to be missed great picture books.

We are currently doing Teaching Literary Elements with picture books by scholastic and are loving it! It's a great snuggle up curriculum.

  4. We used the autograph book with the space for pictures. While I like it it didn't have enough space. We just bought the plain book after that Each kid will probably like having their own as a novelty. There were Mickey Mouse small notebooks at the dollar store I got for my nieces. They worked perfect.

Next time we go I am going to bring a picture frame mat for the autographs. That way we can frame a pic with the autographs.

    Have fun! I'm jealous.

    Dont forget extra pens.

  5. I work two 7pm-7am shifts per weeks. Different days each week. On the days I need to sleep(usually till 12) my son plays or watches some educational TV then we school 12:30-3. They are definitely light days. We make up for it. I've tried having my son complete some work while I am asleep but it didn't work well. Hopefully soon he will be mature enough to work on some things independently.

  6. Age 10 boy Week 11 Ivan the Terrible I think he did a nice job. Would like some others opinions.

Ivan IV was crowned Emperor of Russia in 1547.He was the first Russian ruler to be called Tsar, which is the Russian word for Caesar (an old roman title.)

He fought with the Mongols and his northern neighbors to enlarge his kingdom. He also conquered the Tartar ( Turkish people group) city of Kazan in 1552. That same year he ordered the construction of a new church.

Construction on this new church began in 1555 and went on until 1679, long after Ivan's death. The church is called Saint Basil's Cathedral and still stands today. It is most vivid building in Moscow. The intricate colors and designs pop like a firework. The many domes have amazing patterns that make them look like hot air balloons, ice cream cones, and baskets. The center tower looks as if it was trying to touch heaven itself. It is a very beautiful building built by a tyrant.

In Russia, Ivan IV was ruthless. He was given the name "Terrible" because of his treatment of wrong doers. The newly dubbed Ivan the Terrible formed a secret police to hunt out his enemies. He wrote, “If a Tsar's subjects do not obey him they will forever be at war with one another." During the "reign of terror" the secret police killed thousands of innocent people, the Tsar suffered from mental breakdown, and Ivan killed his own son. Ivan also attacked his own city of Novgorod and massacred the population.

Finally, in 1584, Ivan the Terrible died. He had been ill for weeks. He died suddenly while he was getting ready to play chess. He left his country poorer and in chaos.

Ivan the Terrible left his mark on Russia. Today, Saint Basil's Cathedral still stands, tall and proud, reminding people of a time when Russia was ruled by a madman.

  7. I have to say we love WWS. My son is ten but reads and comprehends much higher. I have had a hard time challenging him. With WWS I feel like we cover so many topics, research, reading comprehension, writing, spelling, grammar (with reviews & revisions). If we only accomplish WWS and math each day I feel like we had a solid day. I agree with the OP that the reading selections lead to much deeper discussions and further research. I couldn't be happier and my son says it is his favorite program.
