Funny you asked that tonight. We have an all day field trip this week and I was just wondering what work we would do that day. Final decision math review problems in the car and reading before bed. I'm leaning toward starting a 4 day school week to give us a field trip/review day each week.

I don't have a lot of experience but I'll add my thought. Is your son a strong reader with good comprehension skills? He may be having a hard time decoding what the problem is asking for.

I was planning to skip the timeline but realized I definitely need one. I don't have a lot of wall space(I'm the one with the classroom in the closet) but I'm not sure if a binder style timeline would work out. Any suggestions? I'm on a limited budget with the holidays coming up. I looked at a few that were pretty expensive. Are there any good freebies out there?

My son really enjoyed Along came a Dog, The wheel on the school.

Thanks for the ideas. I will check them out this weekend.

Thanks Wendy. We have been working with those. They are great. I was wondering if there was anything out there for the next step.

I just listened to SWB lecture on elementary writing. It answers a lot of questions/concerns. I would highly recommend listening. Someone here told me about it and I am eternally grateful!

Anyone know if any online lessons?

We just got an iMac yeah! I'm trying to figure it all out. I downloaded one of SBW lectures it's on the computer is there a way to move it to my iPod(touch). It opens and plays with I tunes but it isn't in the library. Thanks I'm not very tech savvy.

I printed out two copies of the state outline flashcards from enchantedlearning.com, then my son wrote the capitals on one.

We borrowed the intermediate from the library. It still doesn't have all the words we have needed. I bought the app for my iPod and use that when the word isn't in it. The app gives audio pronunciations which is great. The library has different publishers I am going to keep trying some of the suggestions from other posters.

My son is also 8. We do MM2. For the price it's a great value. He can work independently which is great. He reads the lesson does the first three problems, I check to be sure he is working the problems correctly and he continues on his own. So far I am very happy with this choice.

Thanks for the idea about the lecture. I'm downloading it now and will listen today at the gym. My main problem is comparing my kid to PS. I need to get over it!

I just took my son out of PS. He is very writing phobic! WWE 3 is working great for him. It's helping build his confidence. I just added WWW 2 because I didn't feel he fully understood sentence structure. We also do FLL 3 which i love. Being behind in writing is my biggest fear but I'm settling in, feeling more confident. Pushing and frustrating him is NOT helpfull! Good luck I'm sure you'll do great! Our biggest asset is that we want our kids to thrive, not what "training" we have.

We are moving into our second month HSing. Still Loving it!!
I'm starting to add more things in slowly. I'm not sure if we need a phonics program. My son taught himself to read before K and reads fluently. Not sure of grade level but he can pretty much read anything he tries. One thing i can say for the PS was they definitly taught phonics. He knows his rules! We do spelling workout D. He is a great speller, so far the program is really easy for him. I am continuing with it for the phonics reinforcement but I feel like it's busy work. Do I need to continue with phonics or could I switch to a vocabulary/spelling list from our reading?
I also am considering adding some literature studies. Maybe a MBTP literature unit? Any ideas/opinions?
Thanks for the tips.

I would like my son (8) to have some extra practice with word problems. We currently use MM 2. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We have a "classroom in a closet." I converted the closet in the dining room. Job lot bookcase and a small desk :) took the door off and hung a shower curtain rod with a curtain. Works perfectly for our school for one!

Thanks for the great advice. Checked out the reading lists and headed to the library! WWE 3 is going well I go slow with dictation/narration but in 14 lessons I've already seen a huge improvement. Going for song school do I need the teachers guide too?

Hi all,
This is our first year HSing our 8 year old son(3rd). So far things are going great!! I love having him with me all day and watching/ helping him learn!
I'm so glad I finally got the guts to do it. We are doing MM(2a), FLL3,WWE3,spelling workout D, SOTW1 with library supplement, American history using DK book as spine, Human body using Usborne encyclopedia as spine plus library supplement. He is also working on an independent study of the US states. For reading he is working on mythology(which he is loving). PE is covered by soccer and baseball teams. Art and music ?? Yeah I'm definitly not doing enough there. We occasionally read a music/art book. I'm hoping once winter sets in he will have time to try some art/music classes.
We usually work for about 4 hours. Is that about right for grade 3? I'm thinking of adding in Latin. Is song school to young for him?
Any ideas/opinions/comments would be apreciated. Good book suggestions would also be appreciated. He LOVES to read. The type of kid you have to tell to put the book down so he doesn't get run over in the parking lot! He will read anything I have a hard time keeping up with him!
Thanks in advance.
Next step for Latin
in K-8 Curriculum Board

We will be finishing SSL soon. My son loves his Latin. I'm not sure where to go from here. I was looking at LFC but it is pricey. I only have one so I won't be able to pass it on. I also was looking at GSWL. Price is much better and the MP3s are available free. I have zero Latin knowledge so I need a strong program. I'd appreciate thoughts/ideas. Thanks
