  1. I'm sorry, how do look up an abbreviation? What is TOC?
  2. I looked at Chalkdust and it looks good. I've seen/heard that TT Algebra 2 isn't the best. I am thinking of changing to Chalkdust and having him do Geometry for 9th then Algebra 2 for 10th. I emailed Chalkdust to see what sequence they recommend. What do they recommend after Geom and Alg 2? It looks like pre-calc and calc, but doesn't the student need trig?
  3. I wonder if I switch programs if he will miss something that one program doesn't cover.
  4. What math programs are more rigorous? Is MUS ok for someone who may pursue a math major?
  5. Do you think grammar needs to be more rigorous than GWG? What would be more rigorous then GWG? Would R&S, ABEKA or BJU?
  6. I had some questions on another post about TT. I'm wondering if TT is ok to use through pre-calc for child who may go into engineering. I'm still trying to decide whether to follow Algebra 1 with Algebra 2 or Geometry. I think I'm going to do Algebra 2 since that's what TT recommends. Is there a "better" curriculum for students who may go into engineering? He used Saxon and few others and when we found TT it seemed to work the best for him. It does take him awhile to complete his lessons...maybe an hour.
  7. I've never used GWG before but I want to use it for my 14 yo 9th grader and 12 yo 7th grader this year. They haven't had alot of grammar, but did a few years of EG and last year they both did R&S Grade 6 ( as WTM said to start older kids there if they never used R&S grammar before). Now I want to use GWG because it gets good reviews, teaches diagramming and is an independent course of study. I'm wondering about using it for my 9th grader. The company said they have had high school students use it before. I wonder if I should start with Grade 7 or 8? I looked at Table of Contents and I think he could start with Grade 7 and then follow up with Grade 8 in 10th grade. Is that enough for high school? He'll also have vocab, writing, and literature for English. I think it's ok, but I'd some other opinions. Thanks
  8. I was going to send back the Algebra 2 and get geometry, but when I talked to the TT rep she said they really encourage people to take Algebra 2 after Algebra 1 to keep it fresh in their minds. I'm really not sure what he should do this year, Algebra 2 or Geometry. And, I'm still wondering if TT is ok for him if he does pursue engineering. He used Saxon before, but TT seemed to better for him. Each lesson can take him a while to finish each day, but he seems to get it.
  9. Yes, that helped. I want to prepare my ds for engineering and I'm wondering if TT will do that. I'm thinking that if he went to a PS he would get whatever program that particular school had and that using TT couldn't be any worse than that. What program would be better at explaining the "why" of math. I guess MUS would. How is that as far as preparing a child for engineering, etc? Should I have him take Algebra 2 or Geometry in 9th grade? I would like him to take PSAT in 10th grade (and maybe 9th) as a practice.
  10. Wow, thanks for that great reply. It was so helpful. I know so little about this high school math as I never took calc. So, I think I'll have ds take TT geometry and then it sounds like it would be ok to continue with TT through calc even if he may go into engineering. Any other comments about that? Thanks,
  11. Hey Pam!! Wow, small world! What if I have him do TT Geometry this year (9th grade) then switch to Jacob's for Algebra 2 in 10th? Jacob's incorporates Trig in the Algebra 2 then goes to calc with no pre-calc. So would it be feasible to do 9th- TT geometry 10th- Dr Callahan/Jacob's Algebra 2 w/ Trig 11th- Calc 12th- What??? He's not a super stud in math, but he is thinking of engineering. Or maybe, just use the Dr Callahan/Jacob's for Algebra 2 and then use TT for pre-calc and calc? But is that too redundant with TT having Trig in Pre-calc? I don't have a strong math background so I don't know what he should have.
  12. I read somewhere not to use TT Algebra 2. My ds finished TT Algebra 1 last school year and I was planning to continue to use TT and have him take Algebra 2 as TT recommends it to take after Algebra 1. I'm wondering if I should have him take geometry instead. I wonder if I should avoid TT Algebra 2 also. I've heard "Ask Dr. Callahan" (I think it's called Jacob's math too) is really good. Sue
  13. I've used TOG for 4 years. My oldest will be in 9th grade. I just looked at MFW and I"m wondering about changing to it- it looks like it might be easier for me? And maybe easier for the kids? I'm wondering how their writing program is for high school? Sue
  14. I've used TOG for 4 years and I love it. I used SL before that. I am wondering if it would be easier, better if I have my 14 yo ds do SL for high school. I think it may be easier because of their schedule that is planned so the parent doesn't have to. It may be better because I won't have to spend as much time as I do for TOG although I will most like likey still use it for my youngers. My concern about SL is that there is no ancient history. There is American history, History of God's kingdom (this one will have some world history), 20th Century World history and Civics/American Gov't. It seems the SL history will leave gaps...but what they have sounds great.
  15. I don't have an answer because I am looking for the answer to "how many credits in high school and in what subjects". The answers I just got on another post is 5-7 credits/year. What is MFW??
  16. Thanks for GREAT input! I know my load looks heavy and I don't want it to be. I've seen different info on how many credits colleges/high schools want. So it seems 5-7 is on target for hs credits. My ds has expressed interest in engineering. So, my intent is to have him finish calc in 12 grade (9th Algebra II, 10th Geometry, 11th Pre- calc which has trig, and 12th- calc). He really needs to improve his writing- he hates writing. There is nothing that he really wants to study or learn about. Here are some changes below. Is there something else I can do to make it "better"? Algebr 2- 1 credit English (Including Lit) (R&S English and TOG writing)- 1 credit Apologia Biology- 1 credit History (TOG YR 4 U3-4 and Year 1 U1 and U2)- 1 credit German I 1 credit Logic- 1/2 credits PE - 1/2 credit I think I just won't count his Bible. Sue
  17. Any other good beginning logic courses for 7th and 9th grades?
  18. What logic course would you use if you are just starting logic in 7th and 9th grade? Intro to Logic for 7th? Fallacy Detective for 9th? anything else? Sue
  19. I have too much scheduled for my son, but I'm not sure what to leave out. How many credits are usual for college bound students? We finally started latin last year and we lived in Germany and my son will complete German I through Oklahoma State online. I really want my kids to start log this year too. My kids are 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, and 1. Here is what I have for my 14 ds but I think it's too much...but I'm not sure how to lighten the load aned still strive for classical ed. Algebr 2- 1 credit English (R&S English and TOG writing)- 1 credit Literature (TOG...should I give this 0.5 credit?) Apologia Biology- 1 credit History (TOG YR 4 U3-4 and Year 1 U1 and U2)- 1 credit German I (he is about half way done but I will give him the 1 credit for this year)- 1 credit Logic- not sure what I am using yet, I think Fallacy Detective. I guess 0.5 credits? Latin I- 1 credit I also plan to have him do SL Bible and he'll play sports too and I guess start on PSAT prep work. Should I award PE and Bible (Apologetics) credit? His schedule continues like this through high school. Thanks Sue
  20. When you said he placed in Calc, what do you mean? What test did he take? Was it a placement test? I read somewhere (maybe Cathy Duffy) that TT is weak in Algebra II. TT just replied to me- they recommend Algebra I then Algebra II then geometry but said it really doesn't matter. Sue
  21. My ds finished TT Algebra I last year and I ordered TT Algegra II for this year, which is his 9th grade, but I realized that many people do Geometry first. So I will order the geometry and return the Algebra II. TT doesn't have a Trig course. They say it's incorporated (I forget which level it's incorporated in). If I use another program for Algebra II besides TT would he still get trig? I want him to be able to have 9th- geometry 10th- algbra II 11th- pre-calc 12th- calc My goal is to have him finish calc in high school. Does he need to do pre-calc? Sue
  22. WTM says it is very important to diagram sentences. TOG recommends Easy Grammar which doesn't teach diagramming. My oldest 2 (14 and 12 yo) did a year of R &S and my 10 yo did FLL so they learned to diagram (at least they learned some). I was going to switch to Easy Grammar because it's easy to implement, but I am hesistant now because it doesn't teach diagramming. Please give me your input. Sue
  23. I haven't had my kids take logic classes yet. I have a 14 yo ds, 12 yo ds, 10 yo dd, 8 yo ds, 6 yo dd and 1 yo ds. I want my 14 yo and 12 yo to start logic and I may have my 10 yo also. Which Logic course do you recommend? Introductory Logic by Wilson/ Intermediate Logic by Nance or Memoria Press's Traditional Logic. I will most likely by the DVD's for the dc to watch. Thanks, Sue
