  1. (To clarify...CarnegieMellon, not CentralMichigan)

DS is looking at musical theatre.  He also excels at, and is interested in, social sciences like Econ and Poly Sci.  He'd like to give musical theatre a real go first, but wants the backup of a degree in something else, just in case. CMU is interesting because it's a great school at both and, from their website, they are very open to that sort of cross-school double major.

Any words of guidance on homeschool applications to CMU?  Any chance someone's been through the application process to the fine arts or musical theatre dept, specifically?

  2. Any idea what we're talking about with 'Right-leaning' in Comparative Gov?  I don't have a problem with teachers having a prospective and this might be an opportunity to see that prospective well examined.

From her bio, Ms Reed seems exceptionally qualified and her classes scores on the AP exam last year were amazing.

  3. DS16 is finishing up AoPS Intermediate Alg and I think that's the end of the line in this series for him.  He can do it (mostly...the back 4-6 chapters of that book are _hard_) but he really dislikes it and I don't see a lot of reason for him to invest this much time and angst in continuing on like this.  He's currently thinking about a musical theater career and the backup would be something in the social sciences (he LOVED Dr Richman's Macro Econ class).  Probability, Statistics and Game Theory are all interesting to him, so I thought maybe we'd look there next.

He's got 2 years of HS left.  I'd like to see him end with AP Stats.  We've got 2 years to get there.  I'd like to take the whole 2 years so we're slowing down on math a bit, but still feel confident in claiming math credits for both Jr and Sr year.  He'll have 3-4 online AP classes each year already + English at a JC, so I think for schedule flexibility this needs to be taught by me.

    SO, looking for pointers to:

    1) WAH AP Stats sources that people have used.

    2) good resources on Game Theory - basics & theory, as applied in Economics, and as applied in card games or similar (he's really into a CCG).

    3) Probability & Counting.  We've got the AoPS books.  Anyone have a pointer to something a bit more 'fun'?

  4. I'm sure I've seen references to a thread on the delta between AP CalcBC and AoPS Calculas.  I've searched for all the keywords I can think of and I'm not finding it.

Can someone post (or pm me) a pointer?

We've home-taught math using AoPS books thus far and are planning on continuing through CalcBC.  I understand it's not an exact match, though, and want to understand the delta.

  5. The last AP test here is the day after tomorrow, so ofc it's time to sign up for next year!  Wheee!

DS16 took APBio, MacroEcon and MicroEcon - all @ PAH.  He got A's in all 3 and I expect 4's or 5's on all the exams based on practice tests.  It was stressful, but if I'm being honest, he holds tight to being stressed..so that's likely to happen regardless of the workload.

Next year he's taking APUSH w/ Mrs Richman (he loved (LOVED) Dr. Richman and is hoping she's somewhat similar) and EnvSci w/ Molly Olsson.

He'd really like to take CompGov.  He's a social sciences kid - loved Human Geo and Econ.  Julia Reed, who teaches CompGov at PAH also sounds amazing - so well qualified and such a rock star!

Mrs Richman's application for APUSH has totally scared him, though.

Anyone have a DC who has taken some of these and can compare the workload?  What's the time commitment for APUSH and CompCov like, really?

  6. 3 hours ago, Momto5inIN said:

they said the AP course covers about the equivalent of the first month or so of the first class in their CS sequence. They said if a student got a 4 or a 5 on the exam AND has continued in programming past that on their own, they could take the final of that class to try to test out of it. But it's not a sure thing by any means.

That's roughly consistent w/ my expectations for first-term CS class.

Personally, I wouldn't use an AP test to skip __any__ course in my major, regardless of what that major was.

  7. DS likes social sciences.  He's done AP HumanGeo and is doing Macro and Micro Econ now.  He likes history.

Next year we're planning on APUSH.  I'm wondering about the USGov and CompGov classes.  It __seems__ to me like there's a decent amount of overlap between the USGov and the USH classes, and between the USGov and the CompGov topics...but is that wrong?

Is it a reasonable idea to add the 2 Gov ones if he's going to be doing USH anyway?  Anyone been through either of the *Gov classes at PAH?

  8. all still very up in the air...but probably:

    DS16 (11th grade)

German 3.5 & 4 @ OSU (he's doing 3 years of German in 2 years so he can take AP as a Sr).

    PreCalc (AoPS, home-taught)

AP USH (PAH....still deciding on which teacher)

1-2 DE English courses at the local JC

    and possibly:

AP Env Sci (PAH, if he does it)

AP US Gov (seems like this works well w/ APUSH?  He really likes social sciences)

    DD14 (9th Grade)

    German 2 @ OSU

    PreCalc (AoPS, home-taught)

    <something for English>

    History (HotMW, home-taught)

    and some subset of:

    ASL, maybe w/ opentent?

    AP CompSciA @ PAH

Biology, probably combo of home-taught and online enrichment classes?

  9. DS has Mr Burns for uEcon.  He loves that the class is very organized and the whole set of assignments is laid out at the start.  Scores from people who have taken the class do seem to be quite high, so clearly there's something good going on.

Dr Richman, who taught the MacroEcon class, is possibly his favorite teacher OF ALL TIME, so there's high interest her in finding out if Mrs. Richman is anything like her husband.

  10. saw  Dr Tanner (https://debrabell.com/product/biology/ ) referenced for providing an online bio course.

We don't have any direct experience w/ this specific class. She teaches AP bio at PAH, however, which we've had.  That's based on Campbell. AP Bio is a huge amount of information.

Overall, Dr Tanner did a solid job of presenting the material and providing guidance.  DS found the class itself frustrating because she was pretty disorganized...assignments would get moved (or removed) after they'd been assigned, or weren't assigned by the dates the syllabus said they would be, it took ages for things to get graded, etc.  It's probably fine for many students, but it was a source of anxiety here.

  11. seriously not sure what to do here.

DD14 will be a freshman next year.  She's asking to go to public HS.  One reason is she believes school has become a source of too much conflict between her and us.  IMO, the largest source of that conflict is that she's not getting her work done and what she is doing often lacks effort, but there is conflict.  I expect there would be if she was going to public school as well, we'd just be less informed.

    - She wants to accountable to someone else.  Maybe that would help.

    - She's currently pretty against online classes.  Partially that's because her big brother is taking several, and while he loves them and is doing awesome, he's also a stress-ball about it (anxiety). She's also against the online classes because she's really struggling to learn by watching a video of someone lecture and ALSO struggling to learn by just reading independently.

    - She wants an 'in classroom' setting

    - She's concerned that she's not getting a 'well rounded enough' education.  There's some truth to that lately.  That's partially because we keep reducing the workload hoping to find the point where she'll meet expectations, and partially because the past year has been just such a struggle (mental health issues) that there were bigger fish to fry.

We're currently pretty against sending her to public school.  She'd have to give up all but probably 1 of the activities she does and loves, and maybe even all of them to fit in therapy.  I'm quite concerned she's not currently able to handle the social situation, emotionally.  It'd be a HUGE change to the family daily schedule as well as the calendar impact...we currently travel quite a bit, spend summers at a lake house, etc.

    So we're looking for alternatives.

If I found just the right online class, maybe that'd be appealing?  There's a JC down the street...how early is too early to start a class there?  Any good SF Bay Area in-a-classroom class options for home schooled highschoolers??

Really not sure what to do about this and feeling pretty distressed.  This is feeling like an existential crisis...both kids have been HS'd since K.

  12. it's requiring us to update his account information...but it will take the 'not listed' choice <shrug>.

DS15 got a 4 on AP HUG - his first AP exam!  And, true to form, he's mostly relieved it's not a 2 and I'm super excited it's a 4.

ETA : this was self-taught.  We used the latest ed of the Rubenstein text and the Barron's review.

  13. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...it won't take the CA homeschool code as the highschool code, which is required to find out your scores!

http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/testright/resources/homeschool_codes.pdf says the CA code is 990599, and I'm fairly sure that's what DS used.

On the get your scores page it has a search menu to lookup your HS.   I tried entering the code and it claims there are no matches found.

    Anyone else having better success??

  14. Yup.  We bought the book 2 years ago, from their website.  I went through the registration process, signed the affidavit as a HS'er, etc.  They sold me digital content, but I couldn't log in and access it.

After probably 15 hours on the phone w/ various people it became clear that:

    1) they changed their policy over that summer and no longer will sell it to a homeschool, no matter how you're registered, etc.

    2) they are super bad at communicating this kind of policy internally.

    3) they need to fire 100% of their website dev's and hire anyone decent.  Seriously - it's dreadful.

Pearson has been directing eveyone to their HS'ing oriented website, but as far as can tell is totally useless.  There's almost nothing there.

In short - love the text, but Pearson has decided the HSing community is not worth dealing with.  Just buy it used and go from there.

  15. Can it?  Well - you're the teacher/principal, etc (in most states), so you can pick what you want.

Should it be? IMO, probably not.  FWIW, I don't really like it as a way to learn to program, either, though it's clearly successful for many people.

You might be able to augment it a bit and make it more credit-worthy and also address some of what bothers me about it.

     (context - I'm a SW Engineer).

    My three issues...

    1) there's very little discussion of why.  It's quite rote 'type this thing here' wheee....it seems to have produced what the program wanted to see.

    2) not much in the way of problem solving.  Code is a language - you reason about problems in it.  CodeAcademy, from what I've seen, has very little of that.  To add it they'd need more open-ended problems.

    3) there's no feedback.  Code is communication - not that different from essay writing.  There are conventions and structure to how you code so it's readable by others, maintainable, etc.  This seems tough to do without an actual person reading the code you write, but from what I saw CA doesn't even attempt it (discussion of proper variable names? comments? etc?)

It's a great way to get started and to learn a little bit of the syntax, but you might look at some supporting books in whatever language she's using or find a part-time class to sign up for? (AoPS?)
