An unrelated AMC8 question: Are the AMC8s from >10 years ago known to be somewhat easier than the modern ones?

absolutely.  For the AMC8 it appears there was a material jump in difficulty starting w/ last year.  You can see it in the published distributions of scores.

DD12 took the AMC8 for the second year in a row yesterday - she only got to problem 20.  All practice exams from years 2014 and prior she can complete or nearly so.

  2. Hello!

DD12 enjoys math -in particular number theory.  She's been through AoPS Intro Alg. I've got the AoPS NT book and we'll start on that soon in parallel w/ Geometry.  I wonder if anyone has suggestions for better or more thorough programs that she could handle w/o a ton more background.  It's such a big and interesting subject, but the AoPS book doesn't seem to really cover much.  I was motivated to find something better by

http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/17/asia/china-migrant-worker-good-will-hunting/ and it's reference to Carmichael numbers...

  3. if he's business focused you might look at the kinds of math normally used in ops-research.  Topics include:

    -stats, as previously mentioned

-queuing theory/markov chains (how big a supply of toothbrushes do I need in my warehouse if I want to always have one when a customer orders it but don't want to store any extras)

-graph theory (multi-commodity flow is everywhere)

-numerical minimization/lin-alg.  As a bonus, this is sufficient to understand basic ML which is everywhere in business these days...churn models, AB testing, etc

all the above show up all the time in making informed business decisions.

  4. we went from SM5 -> PA for both my DC.  DD was 10 and I was concerned she wasn't ready for AoPS PA so I took her through JA first to buy some time.  In retrospect, she cruised through that and it was a waste of 2 months.  At least she liked the word problems about weasels in hats!

  5. 'Dr' Tang's Honors Chem outline, which some people seem to like (he does have nice links to exams, etc)

    http://www.doctortang.com/Honour%20Chemistry/units.htm

    skips the following units:

    Ch 11 (Intro to o-chem)

    Ch 18 (Thermodynamics)

    Ch 20 (Coordination Compounds)

    Ch 22 (Organic Polymers)

Skipping o-chem for a non-AP chem class seems pretty reasonable.  I don't know what coordination compounds are, so maybe I'll just take his work for it that they're OK to skip.  But Thermodynamics?  That seems pretty important, no?

  6. I stalled DD when she was 11 because I thought she wasn't ready for AoPS pre-alg.  We did some arithmetic practice, worked through JA...were in a holding pattern for maybe 4 months.  In retrospect don't think I should have.  JA was too easy (she could easily do a 1/2 chapter a day and the example problems were too easy and too numerous), and overall I think it was just a waste.  If he's ready - go for it.  You can always back off.

  7. DS14 (8th grade)

completed enough HighSchool level work that he & we are convinced we can handle this next year.

    • M&L bio - the whole book.  Great test scores.  Discovered that he loves bio.
    • HotAW - working independently and producing high-quality work.
    • picked Scouts back up and earned 2nd class.  I'm most proud, though, of his massively improved attitude and willingness to go talk to leaders on his own, ask/arrange for what he needs, etc.
    • 17 on his first math contest (AMC8.  Last year's test was hard.  That's top 3.5%.)  He still believes he is 'bad at math'. :glare:

    DD12(6th grade)

    • set an ambitious goal, and worked to achieve it. Decided she wanted to complete AoPS PreAlg in 3 months so she was prepared for the AMC8...worked hard to get it done.
    • 15 on first math contest (AMC8).  That's _not_ the score she wanted.  Happy to see that hasn't discouraged her from doing more.
    • Completed AoPS pre-alg and Intro Alg this year.
    • First USA swimming AA time.
    • taller than Mom (she's happy about that. Mom not so much)

  8. DD12 (7th grade) has probably the following for next year:

    Geom/Alg2 (AoPS)

    Chem (Chang, General Chem)

    English (something)

    History (SOTW 4 + stuff)

    German (OSU)

math and science I'm not worried about HS credit for, because I assume she'll continue on.  What about language - she's currently excited about German, but it's totally plausible she does 2 years and then decides she's had enough.

She'll have had 2 years of HS-level german, but taken during 7th/8th grade.

How does that work out for college admin, most of which require 2 years of a foreign language??  If she took the SAT subject test, say...would that suffice?  Is that reasonable to take after only 2 years of the language?

  9. for the OSU online classes....

there isn't a 'class time' - just assigned activities (videos, reading, work pages) and 15 minutes a week 1:1 via skype w/ the instructor?

Have you found 15 minutes to be enough?  That seems like a terribly small amount of time to get feedback on pronounciation, ask questions, etc.

  10. Any thoughts on the newest ed of Chang Chem (the 11th, published in 2012) vs the 5th ed (published in 2007) that's listed on dr. Tang's course outline (http://www.doctortang.com/Honour%20Chemistry/units.htm)...or just thoughts on the newest edition, generically?

Just realized there are TWO chemistry texts by Chang - 'General Chemistry:Essential Concepts' and 'Chemistry'.  The former is what I'm looking at (Honors Chem, not AP).

That said, there's a 7th ed of General Chem from 2013.

    (http://www.amazon.com/General-Chemistry-Essential-McGraw-Hill-Engineering/dp/B00E6T3DSM/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1464898165&sr=1-6&keywords=chang+essential+concepts+chemistry+7th+edition and

thoughts on the delta between the 7th ed and the earlier versions ('drtang' outline is based on the 5th ed)

  11. It's pretty clear Pearson's intention is not to provide access to teachers editions or materials (including tests & answers) to homeschools.

They are fairly bad about communication, even with their own people, so if you ask enough people you'll probably find someone who believes it's fine because they used to do it and the still have things like homeschool affidavits linked from some places on their sites.

If you do decide to go ahead and order from them directly because you want access to the teacher's editions, I would be prepared to argue for it a lot and I would get IN WRITING any statements from any of their reps saying you'll get access.  And then be prepared to fight.

Even though I managed to make it work for me last year I'm not even going to try with other subjects this year.  They're trying really hard to close whatever loopholes they might have had in the past and not allow it.
