  1. Can I use math-u-see block instead of cuisinare rods? DD started math with math-u-see primer and is therefore comfortable using these blocks. We are currently using Singapore and we love it. I was thinking of supplementing with a bit of miquon. Are there teacher's manuals or do I just buy the workbooks? How long does it typically take to go through a book (dd is currently doing singapore 1b standards)? Would you buy all levels? Quick overview of what each level covers?

    Any info. is appreciated...thanks!

  2. The reason I'm asking for vintage book recommendations is because everything else is readily available to me. I can shop RR or any other USA store or locally for all other curriculum. I can't download most vintage books from where I am.

In reference to math, we are doing Singapore and so I've got that covered. I wouldn't mind looking over any decent math vintage books though.

As far as grades go, I interested in looking at everything. I like to look ahead and since I'm just beginning my hs'ing journey, all grades are needed.

Thanks for the Elson reader suggestion...I'll add that to my list nansk.

I'll look at your suggestion Lily Grace.

  3. Genny, some members here with unlimited bandwidth will e-mail you ebooks that are not too large to be sent through e-mail. I've got some tech and internet problems that mean I have to severely limit my offers to do this right now, but if you get desperate for a certain book everyone is raving about, do try asking one of us to send it to you.

I'll try to post you some more links. I hope others do too  at the lack of response. I think a lot of people START to use these books and then hop elsewhere, so aren't in a rush to post in a "tried and true" thread.

The McGuffey Eclectic series is hard to get entirely in clean pdfs. I think the main eclectic 4th reader is still unavailable for free. I ended out purchasing the dollarhomeschool versions to know I had all the right ones. I can really be OCD. I was making myself nuts trying to track them down and confirm I had complete sets. There are SO many sets!

Maybe I should rename the thread...I don't want to scare people off  I guess I titled it that way because there are just sooo many vintage books to choose from. I'm just curious to know what are the standard one's most people use.

  4. I'm definitely looking for something light for grammar...nothing rigorous. Basic and fun is what I'm looking for. I'm also looking for some basic and fun copywork. Since she's a little slow with her motor skills (she's made leaps and bounds with her printing...taken a lot of practice) I don't want to give a lot to copy....short and sweet until she's gets a little faster with her printing.

She's advanced in reading though and would love some good readers for her to enjoy and learn positive character traits from. Thanks Susie for the links!

    Keep the suggestions coming

  5. Thanks for the info! I would love a list of readers for beyond the learning to read stage that have good story lines and teach morals. DD is 6 but is advanced in reading. I pretty much have an at home library of beginner readers for when my other kiddos are ready to learn.

We're using Singapore but I thought her math book looks cute as a supplement. Wow...it really covers all that...cool!

Based on pp's I'm started to think it might not be so great for LA....arghhhh...I can't seem to find anything that fits! Guess I'll be posting a new topic on the subject and see if someone can help me find something that will work.

I would love to hear what vintage books are beloved/tried and true for any subject. My opportunity to download them will basically only be while dh is away so if you vintage lovers get a chance please post your suggestions!

    TIA:)

  6. I'm looking at her 'everyday number stories", "In The Animal World" and her "primary and intermediate language lessons" (especially curious about the last). Her downloads are not available where I am but dh will be on business soon in the states and can download things for me there.

    Any opinions?

Any other suggestions for the following:

    readers (I don't like mcguffey)

    grammar

    writing

    composition

I would like to make a list for him before he goes.

    TIA

  7. Mr. Q's science. It's set up as textbook reading one day, experiments two days each week. It comes with a list, by chapter, of all the experiment materials needed. Life science is free on the site, while the other books are $50 I believe. It only comes in ebook form, but Staples or Office Max will print it up pretty inexpensively for you if you go with black and white printing.

Can I bug you for a link ... I would like to try the free life science.

Thanks everyone for all the responses thus far. Deciding on science has been a tough one for me...

  8. Are all of your kids under 6? How about hwo the TWTM explains it? Keep a notebook, follow the four year cycle, study the body, then animals, then plants. It worked well for my 1st grader which I added library books to. We also do a lot of outdoor activities.

Mudpies to Magnets is a book full of neat ideas for those years. Also there is More Mudpies to Magnets which is a little more complicated.

Yep all 4 are under six with my youngest at 7 months. Since I've got my hands full of little one's, I really want something all done for me. I have the more mudpies and magnets book but am looking for something that has explanations, activity pages etc...
