Ok-- this is a really silly question... but HOW do you copy part of another's person's post into your own (a quote) so that you can reference it in your reply? I'm so technologically ignorant... I cannot figure it out!!
As for your thoughts, Brenda-- I LOVE your book/lit club idea!! I really must buy TTC *now* so that I'll be ready to use it in the fall. And in the meantime, I'm going to grab a few buddies so that we can put it into action for next year. I can see where such an endeavor would be highly beneficial and super fun, too!!. So thank you for sharing-- I'm really excited by that possibility!!

Emma, Just wanted to offer a quick apology-- I just realized that last night I neglected to start a new thread w/ my question re: 7th and 8th grade prep; I never meant to hijack yours! So sorry about that!

Swimmermom and others... LOVE the idea of using the Teaching the Classics/WTTW syllabus for 9th grade. What would you recommend for 7th and 8th grade to adequately prepare a student for that course in 9th?? Anything in particular??
-
Thank you,Denise!! That's what I was hoping to hear!

between a 1962 and 1965 text? I've previewed a newer text but would really love to get my hands on one of these older ones! Thanks~
-
Perfect!! Thank you~

I've seen you mention it before, and now that ds is finally reaching junior high age (and thus ready for a junior high level text), I can't seem to find a sample page anywhere.
Is it, by any chance, heavy on parsing/diagramming/parts-labeling?? (I'd like that, truth be told.) I've been working through R & S for a few years now (ds is wrapping up 6th grade)... on and off. "On" when we get to it; "off" when time runs short (or when it seems we're getting stuck in the fluff-n-stuff or rut of been-there/know that.)
I LOVE the look of MCT's grammar... but your recommendations never disappoint! So before I jump the R & S ship (potentially), will you share a bit more about Stewart's? I'd love something academically rigorous while still focusing heavily on the grammar of each sentence to THEN create a better writer. Make sense? And thanks :)
-
Thank you!
Don't you sometimes wish there just weren't so many options??!
-
will you please tell me why??
We've been using R & S for a few years now, and while I really like the series, I'm intrigued by the MCT books. That being said, I've made several impulsive decisions in the past (jumping on the latest and greatest bandwagon, for instance, only to regret it later), and I don't want to do that again!! So please... if MCT appealed to you as well but simply didn't cut the mustard, will you please explain why you decided against it?? Thanks~

Thank you, thank you, thank you-- that makes perfect sense!!

Hey, folks!
I'm researching my algebra options for next year (I currently have Jacob's in hand along with a 1990 version of Richard Brown/Dolciani; still waiting on Foerster's), and from what I can gather, with regards to Dolciani-- several of you have posted that you prefer the older texts over the newer ones. As I skim through, I'm wondering-- what, exactly, do you find to be the main difference(s) between the two, and how does one go about locating an older Dolciani textbook (and for that matter, what constitutes "older")?
-
Wow, this is great!! Thank you, one and all, for your thoughtful replies-- you've given me *much* to ponder over the days and weeks ahead... please know how much I appreciate your willingness to help (and know that I'll surely be posting again soon with a few follow-up questions :)
Many thanks and well-wishes for a great week ahead!!

I'm wondering-- can an advanced 8th grader handle (and enjoy) BJU's 9th grade Physical science (with the videos)??
In a nutshell, here's my deal:
Ds (12) will finish 6th grade this spring. Next year he'll start Algebra (we're wrapping up Singapore 6 this spring) and junior high science to prepare him for highschool level work (ideally, I'd like him to take Biology in 9th, Chem. in 19th, and Physics in 11th so that he has his 12th grade year for advanced science if he's so inclined).
Thus far, we've done very little outling and very little science w/ a structured program (lots of videos, lots of library books, but no textbooks or significant structure). He's had science this year and last via co-op, but he hasn't retained a ton. This year he's taking Bio (using The Rainbow text), but I'm not thrilled with the class or his retention. Originally I was leaning, therefore, towards BJU's Life Science for 7th grade and their Space/earth for 8th. Now, though, I'm questioning the need to take physical science before the more complex sciences (in which case, I'd like him to do that in 8th grade... BEFORE high school).
So.... what do I do? Can a non-outlining newbie-to-BJU handle their space/earth in 7th and their physical science in 8th (to then move on to Bio in 9th)? Or should I look more seriously at the Life Science course (since his bio this year has been sketchy at best) for 7th-- to help him ease into/adjust to a junior high level work load? And then what? Space/ Earth w/ NO physical science at all? OR Physical science (in 8th) either via BJU or another text (perhaps Apologia if you think BJU's will be to streneuous). He's a very bright boy and he does very well with his studies, but the outlining required of BJU will be very new to us (as well as the work load required for that subject)-- I'm a bit concerned about entering high school with his/my sanity still in tact!!
So... please advise!! I really want him to take some BJU science, and I want him to learn from Mrs. Vick if possible (I've heard such great things!). I'm just really struggling with what to do over the next 2 years to best prepare him for high school.
And thanks :)

Wow!! I had no idea! I just assumed that you get to keep the dvds (especially at that price!)-- it just never crossed my mind that I'd have to return them at the end of the year! The price tag (for multiple courses and multiple children) really does add up then, doesn't it?? Still, BJU 7 sounds like a worthwhile product and exactly what we need as science, up to this point, has been very hit or miss in our house!
Now, if I were to choose the online version, would that require ds to be plugged in at the same time every week? The savings would certainly be nice, but the flexibility of a dvd would likely nudge me in that direction.
And thanks so much for your help-- preparing for junior high and high school is a whole other ball game from elementary!!
-
Please pardon my complete ignorance here, but I'm just now catching up on this thread (ds in in 6th and I've just gotten a bee in my bonnet to start planning highschool... to some extent or other).
As for the BJU dvds, I'm confused. I've seen great excitement re: Mrs. Vick as a biology teacher. Is she NOT the teacher on the dvds? And if not, how does one get into her class, so to speak? Does she teach an on-line option (similar to that of the Potter's School)?
Again, please bear with me-- you have all been a wealth of info... just trying to get it all figured out!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I truly appreciate everyone's willingness to share (and help!)... you've all given me much food for thought!

And if so, which one?
Ds (12yo, 6th grade) will complete Singapore 6b this spring, and I'm trying to start planning now for next year. He's me oldest, so I've never traveled this route before... should I consider a pre-algebra course (he's done very well with Singapore), or should I plan on jumping straight to algebra?
And please-- how do I decide?? Jacobs, Chalkdust, LoF, Videotext, Saxon... and on and on and on. Help!
If anyone has had success w/ a specific text after a successful run with Singapore, please share!! I covet your input! And thanks~
-
I'd *love* to hear what's working for everyone! Right now I'm considering Lial's BCM... or would that text be unnecessary after 6b? The NEM series does not interest me; any other suggestions? And thanks!
-
Thanks so much, you guys... I really appreciate your help!
-
I know this is likely been discussed over and over and over again, but when I "search," I can't see to come up with anything.
Would love to hear your thoughts-- I'm leaning towards Jacobs for Algebra (I assume in 8th grade?), but what would I use in between?
Any guidance would be *lovely*!! Thanks so much!

From the few pages I've read (and I admit, I've only read a FEW), it seems the text may have been intended for a more mature audience. The co-op class I'll be teaching, while comprised of rising 6-8th grade students, has a wide range of maturity levels and I'm concerned about those kiddos just coming up from the UG class... concerned that they'll be overwhelmed by not only the subject matter but by the writing as well (as far as comprehension is concerned).
Now obviously, the century is what it is-- there's no getting around the fatcs. I'm just wondering if there's a gentler approach or if the Idiot's Guide (as recommended by ToG) truly is the best choice.
As an aside-- this is my first venture into the dialectic level (my oldest is 11) so I'm a bit overwhelmed myself right now... to say the least! I'm not really sure what IS acceptable (what I should expect from this age group) and what's not~
Any help would be terrific! And thanks :)

We're using Tog Year 4 in the fall and I'm not too thrilled (thus far) w/ the Complete Idiot's Guide they recommend. Any possible substitutions?? Also, the Hakim series-- is it too simplistic/basic for a dialectic student? (I see that it's a core spine for the Upper Grammar stage) Thanks!

Anyone playing today?? I haven't posted a WW in a while, so I decided to dig one up for today :)
Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Thank you, Swimmermom, for all these great ideas!! And thank you MaryCatherine and Gail for help with the "quote thingie"... it worked!!
