  1. That's a hard line to take.

I'd rather have a child who is questioning his/her world and *thinking*, than one who meekly does whatever anyone tell them to do.

And aren't your own kids living hundreds of miles away and bitter about homeschooling? I mean, really.

That is a rather hard line to take.

My son asks why all the time. I think that's fairly normal. I ask why all the time!

  2. My favorite alternative is Zinn's Young People's History of the United States. If we were homeschooling next year that's what we'd use.

Of course, if you think Hakim is too left of center you may not like it. But if you think "question everything" is a good approach, it's a great starting point for discussion.

For an idea of the tone, chapter one introduces Columbus' arrival in the New World from the point of view of the Arawak people.

Ravin, are you referring to the single volume of this book or the multi-volumes or are they basically the same? I looked this up on Amazon and saw this:

    But also this:

  3. Maybe that's why I don't see it so often here.  For one thing we don't have beaches, and it's not hot most of the year (maybe for one month in the summer).

I think you should give it a go next winter.

  4. I like Tera's Whey and Bluebonnet Whey Protein Isolate. I usually buy the vanilla flavor because it goes well with whatever I mix it with.

I also like Vega's Sport Protein, which isn't actually whey--it's vegan--but it costs twice as much as a good whey protein, so I don't buy it very often!

    Thank you! :)

  5. Yup, eggs are my go-to when I'm doing points. Greek yogurt is another good one, like a PP mentioned. Chobani makes a "zero" yogurt that's sweetened with fruit and stevia. I think it's 3 points?

ETA: I also like to do smoothies with fruit (mostly berries), a scoop or two of whey protein powder, and unsweetened almond milk. You can get 20-ish grams of protein for not a lot of points if you work it right.

Which protein powder do you use?

  6. Ditto. I'll assign maybe half the problems on a page.  The only exceptions are word problems and puzzle corners which I require all. If there's a problem with the lesson, we'll review and do the the remaining problems, if necessary.

Maybe you could do the same with Singapore since you have it?  I have no experience with it.

Oh, I don't have it anymore.  I lie. I just went and checked and I do have 1B still, mostly worked through. I showed it to him and asked if he would like it, just with less problems and he said yes. Maybe that and start doing Life of Fred again, I have some of those too.

  7. Okay. I told my son I would ask.

We are currently using Teaching Textbooks 3.We started sometime towards the end of last year and used it intermittently. After the new year, we've been using it regularly. He is now complaining about it. A lot. He really dislikes multiple review questions on something he already understands.

Here's what he is looking for in a math program. Something that will teach him new concepts, have him do a few problems to be sure he understand it (around fivish), and then move on to the next concept. He wants to learn, but not have to do repetitive work.

Is there anything like that out there? I think he would prefer a computer or online program, but I am open to any and all suggestions.

    Thanks!

Oh, he's 8, will be 9 in October.

  8. We finally went and saw this today. It was really good! I learned some new stuff from the movie and it covered some stuff we've been going over in history, so that was cool. Not enough of Benedict's voice though, IMO. ;)

  9. I am working on some Malabrigo Nube right now. It feels a bit felted, and doesn't want to draft easily, but it is turning out to be a beautiful yarn!

I second the Ravelry recommendation. Check out the "What a Kool Way to Dye" group. (All about drink mix dyes.)

I did not know that Malabrigo had spinning fiber too! :drool5:

I spin, but haven't in quite a while. I do enjoy it when I do. I do both wheel spinning and spindle spinning.

I've done a lot of dyeing too, especially with Kool Aid, but it's been even longer! I did enjoy it though.

  10. Sue, you should be able to private message her on FB. The downfall to that is that it may go into her "other" folder and she may never look there. Are you friends with any of the same people? If so, one of them could message her and it should go through.

I have a few high school/junior high friends. But I went to two junior highs. The first one was with people I was at school with from 3rd to 7th grade. I have not reconnected with any of them, though I would not mind. I just don't remember last names from that long ago! The friends from the second junior high/high school are all the same, as we all went to the same junior high, then high school.

  11. I am currently separated. We have been separated since July of last year. We will be filing for divorce soon. It is a relief and a grief. I am happier on my own, but I still miss him, if that makes sense? He decided things were over right about the time I was thinking I'd like to start doing stuff with him again. It was difficult. He had no interest in counseling or compromise or anything.

So, I am overall happier on my own and I have faith that in time, I will see this is for the best. Our marriage has been rough for a long time. We almost separated/divorced in 2009, but gave it another chance. It was good for a while, but when down the tubes again.

  12. So, I was reading through the Houston Museum of Natural Science monthly magazine. I get to the section about what movies they are currently showing. I see they have one on the history of Jerusalem and think that would kind of line up with what we're studying in history now. I start reading through the description and learn that it is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. Done deal. We're learning more about the history of Jerusalem next week for sure.
