  1. We have tried a lot of things to help my older dd who struggles with math and CLE we have loved
  2. Thank you! I am going to try that.
  3. I know with my littles it almost seems intuitive. They pick it up do fast not what I was expecting at all but so glad we have found them.
  4. We are loving the cuisennaire rods because it had basically eliminated this 1,2,3,4,5... Counting stuff over and over a million times. I am seeing that they are understanding the value of the color/size of the rod and when rods are put together they are able to see that it is the same size as another rod that it equal. Clear as mud huh. I'm sure someone else could do a much better job of explaining but say they have two light green rods together and they know that they each equal three they then are able to see that it is the same size as a 6 rod and then make the connection 2 light greens/ 2 threes EQUALS one dark green/ 6 rod :D Go to education unboxed and watch her videos...pretty awesome stuff.
  5. So you think I should sit down and do as much as she can/wants a day until we hit something that she kind of lingers on? I just don't want to expect to much or to little as far as how many pages per day. KWIM?
  6. She is 11. I am wondering if perhaps she has some dyscalcula but that's another post I only say that to demonstrate that she is brhind and has in general a hard time retaining new concepts learned. I'm assuming I should start at the beginning and then go quickly through the easy material?? Am I correct in thinking this also how fast should I go through the worksheets? Obviously the orange book is very easy for her so far. Please forgive my iPhone typos:D
  7. Since being on these boards I have read Many posts both good and bad regarding miquon. I have always completely dismissed miquon mistakenly under the assumption that it was for extremely mathy individuals who did math for "fun" ;) I was afraid that somehow the way this program taught concepts would somehow escape this VERY NOT Mathy mommy. However out of sheer desperation of trying to teach math to my equally non mathy dd I have recently purchased miquon and some c-rods and let me tell you the genius of it has not escaped me. The c-rods allow my children to see whole numbers right off the bat instead of counting each unit like they did with the mathusee blocks(drove me crazy and they learned nothing this way) so my question is
  8. Cuisennaire rods. My dd has always liked the abacus too:) Oh yea I second fraction circles!
  9. Does anybody who recieves the National Geographic for kids magazine know if it would be easy for a second grader to read?
  10. Just out if curiosity do the Christian liberty press ones have pictures and text or just text?
  11. My 2nd grade dd isn't to keen on reading but has been reading a lot more since I found some little science readers. I'm thrilled to find something that she is so interested in that she is asking to read but she has pretty much exhausted the couple science readers that we have. Could someone recommend some science/animal related books that would be around a first to second grade reading level?
  12. Well I'm glad to here that it's working out well for some. My dd seems to Be less overwhelmed by math that is on the computer...have NO idea why but if it helps then I'm all for computer math for her! I think I might give this a try to help her get some extra reinforcement.
  13. It is an online math supplement/curriculum
  14. Hi I was just wondering for those of you who have tried dreambox math for your fc what you thought about it? My dd struggles with math and I thought maybe this might be good?
  15. I would just combine them. I have been surprised at how well combining my children has went this year. This is our first year of SL and I was worried that if I combined them that one would miss out on something or the other wouldn't be able to understand everything due to the material being over her head but that hasn't been an issue at all and it has become our favorite part of the school day. I did try TOG last year which happened to also be our first year homeschooling so maybe that is why I found it hard to use? but I had an incredibly hard time painting a cohesive picture of history for my dc using the TOG readings.
  16. I think I need to clarify that I have never used SL science. However, we are using core A for kindergarten this year and I have been pleasantly surprised by it. I just was looking for the pros and cons before I actually ordered the science. :D Thank you to everybody who has responded:)
  17. I saw a post on here recently that made me think that perhaps SL science is not a good program. I have never used SL science but I went ahead and took the SL plunge with my kindergartener and it is fitting us well so far. I have looked at the science several times and have wondered about it. I am just curious about others experiences with SL science, good, bad, needs improvement here or there.... TIA
  18. I recently read about file folder games and thought this sounded like a great inexpensive way to add a little fun to school. If you or dc have some favorites that you have found would you please share.... :bigear:
  19. Omy disaster averted... Or at least that's how I feel after reading everybodies responses! I don't know why things like TOG or SL type programs look so appealing to me in the samples!? But me trying to teach tog felt like pure craziness so if its SL is like that then... I think I'll keep looking. Maybe it's all the great books on the list that just screams buy me!!! ;) I have used some VP things with my older daughter and really liked it so I'll have to go revisit. Would you say MFW was more a whole-pArts program so to speak? Has anybody tried memoria press pre-k? The k looked like too much writing. My ds knows Alphabet/sounds and basic addition. He can write some but not that well. Another curriculum suggestions that I haven't mentioned that I should look at?
  20. Then will I like SL. I have always been really drawn to SL on the guides that come with it but I am TERRIfIED it will be disjointed feeling like TOG was for us. I do not like trying to make a big picture from details. I would much rather have the big picture first and then explore tge details more thoroughly with my children. Kwim? What do you think?
  21. Hi all! I am starting my five yr old in k this year but I can NOT make up my mind!!! Uughhh! Which would you choose if your options were sonlight, MFW, or the improved timber doodle? Please tell me what you'd choose and why. Thanks you:)
