  1. I would cut and paste the "Like New" description, include a detailed description of everything wrong with the book, and include a photo. I would plainly state that he misrepresented the book and that you expect a full refund, including shipping. I have had to do this numerous times, offering to return a book, if they will send a carrier to the house. I am not willing to go to the post office and pay return shipping for a misrepresented book. I have been given a refund 100% of the time. One seller sent me an envelope with twice as much cash as what I had paid. :001_huh:

If he does not agree, I would go through Amazon. I feel that misrepresented books should not be handled as straight returns, like someone just changed their mind. I'll get off my soapbox now. Obviously this is a sore spot for me. I only order "Like New" books, and I expect them to look like new. :tongue_smilie:

    Good luck!

ETA: I have never been asked to return a book. Only one seller was able to produce another copy of the book. Everyone else gave me a refund and told me to keep the book as a token of their apology.

You can go through all of this but really don't have to. Simply go to your account, then to current orders, at the book click on return or some such, it will ask for a reason, give simple explanation. They will give you return postage.

Sadly, I have had to do it.

  2. Has anyone ever had this happen with a breed that is supposed to be allergy friendly?? My son is breaking out in hives, his eyes are puffy, runny and red, and he gets congested when he is around the dog for even a few minutes.

Of course, we will have to give her back if his symptoms don't die down. I am just shocked to pieces that he is actually allergic to a poodle puppy!

Anyone have any experiences to share???

Was the puppy bathed just before you got her? If so it could be what ever they used. Our old groomer used to spray stuff on our dogs after the grooming. The stuff made me sick even if I hardly smelled it. I would try shampooing the pup with your very gentle hair shampoo. You may not be able to use it long term but shouldn't hurt for a once as long as it is a natural shampoo/no harsh chemicals.

Oh, I hope you get to keep her.

  3. We started homeschooling last year through a charter school. I was so worried I couldn't do it. I used the general curricula our ST suggested. Basically what she would've seen in PS and teacher's guides, halfway though we also used ALEKS. We made it through the year, and I really thought I did well, kiddo seemed to be learning.

My s-i-l adores TWTM book (I'm still on the wait list for it through the library) so I came across the forums while looking for more information. I was stoked! Awesome folks that homeschool, yay!

And then I saw all the things you do. My goodness, the extensive length of which curriculum you use, the number of subjects, etc that everyone else is doing/using/loving, has left me feel quite inadequate.

I made up special interest thematic units for the summer. In Autumn we're doing EPGY for supplement LA and math, standard science with supplemental kits from DELTA, and I'm writing the social studies stuff since 4th grade is state history. She took special interest classes through the charter last year and we'll do the same again.

I'm nearly in a panic, convinced I don't do enough. I feel like my lackadaisical approach to art now looks like achromatic coloring. I feel almost ashamed I haven't taught her another language.

However, I am really and truly ecstatic you're all here! I've already gathered a ton of resources and recommendations. There's a lot of funny threads and educational ones that don't necessarily pertain to homeschool, but still rock.

    TL,DR: This place rocks!

I totally understand. I was there once. I am no longer there. Each family is different. Some moms seem to have this very high energy and schooling, extra activities, schooling at the extra activities:001_huh: seems like a very normal rhythm for them and their children. It doesn't work in our family. My kids don't do well in extra activities, my energy level is not very high many days, we have special needs kids and one especially takes a LOT of energy simply to get him through the basics. I have an elderly husband whose health has been deteriating for several years and our oldest adult son is in a power chair requiring several hrs a day care. I used to feel so guilty but I have come to a peace. I know I am doing what is best for our family. That is the beginning and end of it.

I would advice that if your child is learning, enjoying and you are doing the same, don't try to keep up with anyone else. Simply do what you know you are supposed to do.

  4. The Weston A. Price foundation is a good place to start. ;)

:iagree: This one is very good.

There is a lot of fear out there and if someone drinks raw milk and gets sick, will many time connect the two whether correct or not. WPF will talk not only about raw milk but about pasteurized. Very eye opening.

  5. I think they only grow so big, but I'm not sure about that. I think 10-gallon might be pushing it for reasonable size, but 15 might be big enough. Really not sure though.

Food costs about $6 or $7 a month. If you buy food every 4 weeks, that might be pushing it a bit; I think it depends on whether the crickets will last that long or not. You might want to look into whether you could feed frozen food in a pinch (not sure). 2 weeks should be no problem, or at least it hasn't been for ours; she's fine for several days if she runs out of food. (However, she's also full-grown and has a sizeable fat store in her tail. I'd probably want to be more cautious with a baby, to make sure we didn't run out of food. We were in a completely different locale when ours was a baby, so I don't remember what our food-buying routine was back then.)

Thanks for the info. Honestly it is a rarity for us to go much more than 2 wks as something always comes up. I live with high hopes that we can get by once a month but...... The 30 gal wouldn't be to big? You can't get it to big? cost in extra to heat? do the crickets run? Sorry, I digress.

  6. Here are two American made shoe places I've found:

    Munro http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/womens-comfort-shoes-munro?origin=leftnav http://www.munroshoes.com/

Okabashi http://www.okabashi.com/ (sandals and flip flops but they're really inexpensive!! and comfortable)

Thanks for taking the time to send the links. The last ones are not an option as my skin does not respond to the plastic shoes. Maybe us made wouldn't have the same stuff in them? Not sure but....

I need to look at the Munro a bit more though. There might be something there that I could wear.

  7. Thanks, everyone.:001_smile:

My middle son thinks he may have access to a 30 gal tank for nothing for her. Not sure if I want something that big though if a 10-15 gal is big enough. We have very limited space. Would you go ahead and use the bigger tank if available or get a smaller one. Are they like some fish and grow according to the size of their habitat or do they simply get so big and that is it?

I have told her that she has to save up for most of the cost to prove that she can be responsible for the monthly cost of the food.

Oh, how often do you purchase the crickets? We don't always get to the town that has the pet stores every week even. Sometimes it is 2-4 wks. Will this be an issue? I am not interested in having to make a trip to purchase crickets.:tongue_smilie:

  8. We have a leopard gecko. We did a fair amount of research before buying it and everyone says it is a good beginner lizard pet. It is very easy to care for, honestly the hardest part is keeping the crickets you feed them from escaping all over the place, which is not *that* hard. It usually poops in one area of the tank/habitat and we have ours lined in paper towels, once a week or so we pick up the paper towel, put new ones down, and throw the old away. Easiest pet to clean up after, ever.

We have this book and it is just fine for our needs.

I've also been told baby bearded dragons are good for kids and beginners.

Thank You for your reply. I just looked and can get to book used for $4 so think we will start there.

Can you share what size tank/habitat you have? Do you keep the tank in well lit area or darker area?

  9. My 12 yr old dd wants a lizard. One of my adult sons says she needs to get a Leopard Gecko as they are slower/easier to care for.

What else to we need to know about them.

Do they poop all over the place. :001_huh:

How often does their habitat need cleaning. :tongue_smilie:

Do you have a good book to recommend?

Is there another lizard that you would recommend over the Leopard Gecko?:bigear:

She is good at helping taking care of the pets we have but have been told that lizards are very temperamental. This would be her pet and up to her to care for.

  10. I have worn Merrell shoes for years. That really is the only thing I have but I am do to get a pair of fallish shoes that are similar to Merrells with good support like them but without the antibacterial stuff in them.

I have also been trying to purchase American made when ever possible with items I purchase. It looks as though this isn't all that easy with shoes. Any ideas?

One other thing, they can't cost $300. :D I can handle up to around $100 if they are a good shoe as I generally wear a pair of shoes for a couple of years or more.

  11. I thought summer was the time moms got to say, "Go outside and play all day. See you for lunch then dinner." :tongue_smilie:

Just curious how many of you stay home most days without other kids over and your children expect that.

Really I'd like to get there myself but there's this little voice that says they need playdates and beach times and ?ballet, tennis, swimming - lessons? or whatever.

Love to hear from anyone who's gone from being gone and eating out and generally staying fairly busy every day to mostly homebodies who entertain ourselves. We'll go out but I'm looking to cut the expectation for them to go out, kwim?

I should say we used to be this way with one vehicle and life was much more structured for us.

We stay home most of the time but there is always other kids here. We have neighbor hood kids that spend way more time here than at their house. Personally I like it that way. I know where my kids are, who they are with and what they are doing.:D

We have lakes in front of the toilets and rivers running from both doors to the bathrooms as someone is always coming from the pool to us the bathroom. I bake one day and the next it is gone because someone is ALWAYS hungry and most of the time it is more like EVERYONE is hungry. I really don't mind. I know where my kids are, who they are with and what they are doing. I have an extra load of laundry many days, like today, because no one remembered their towel. Can't say I don't mind and we are working on that but I repeat, I know where my kids are, who they are with and what they are doing.;)

I have neighbor hood kids that run up to me out of the blue, give me a hug and tell me they love me. Makes it all worth it AND I know where my kids are, who they are with and what they are doing.

I know that this isn't everyones idea of a good summer but it is ours.:001_smile:

  12. I would also 'warn' them to be sure to check for things like head lice? When we did fc it was a rare thing for a child to come into our care without them.:tongue_smilie: It was also rare that the social worker or emergency care home had checked or started the treatment.

Personally, I would stay away from electronics, at least to start with. I agree with the ones that suggested taking them shopping for something special that is and will be theirs. With the 12 yr old I would definitely put a $$ amount on it from the get go though or it could really turn into a struggle.

  13. I am going to be brutally honest, you say you have 8 cats......that would make me not even consider your house. I have asthma and allergies and I have a son with the same.

One cat, maybe.....but more than 1 and I have problems from the moment I enter the house, no matter how clean it is.

You may have to make a decision, which it sounds like you already have.....the cats or the house.

    Dawn

:iagree: EXCEPT I would probably not purchase a house that had cats at all if there was an alternative. Can you 'house' your cats somewhere else for a time? I would guess it really is a major issue.

  14. After I have manually deleted cookies, they reappear the next day, even when I haven't gone to the same websites. I am using Safari, and I've googled and seen that others have this problem, but I haven't seen any real reason why or how to fix it. Anyone?

Just to give you a laugh, when I saw the title of your post I imagined a cookie jar near empty, you thinking, "Wow, those are finally gone." You come through your kitchen a few minutes later and the jar is once again full of cookies.:lol::lol::lol:

I know, I know, not very many get the way I think.:lol:

  15. I combined ACB with MoH1. It is in the files section of the sharingDwaring loop. If you are a member here is a direct link to the file:

If you are not a member then you will have to sing up but this link should work then.

    ETA:

I don't know if there have been any changes to MoH since I placed that file there. But this will give you a good idea anyway.

Not sure what ACB is? I have signed up but not yet approved.
