  1. If you are interested in learning more on this topic, may I suggest Richard Wolfson's Teaching Company course entitled Earth's Changing Climate. Dr. Wolfson is a physicist at Dartmouth who discusses the scientific issues (not policy) of climate change. Granted, the series is a couple years old so not all of the data is the latest, but I think you will find Wolfson's lectures to be informative. These lectures include explanations of geological and physical phenomenon with information on various models used by climatologists.

Thanks, Jane in NC. This looks good.

  2. No, not really. But now you've given me a reason to show them off in a thread.

I'd have to be pretty peeved to use him.

And as hot as some of the political threads have gotten, I think this is a bit much.

    Show-off! Show-off!

It's going slow. My family is very lucky, we had power back 2 days after the storm, so I will not complain at all. We have what what I like to call the new normal. Houston will be fine, one of the best places to live. :001_smile:

    Glad to hear it.

  3. I don't know yet since we recently moved here, but a little randomness:

Two different people mentioned the rattlesnake festival in Sweetwater, one before we moved here and the other shortly after we arrived. The first person used to be stationed at Fort Hood and loved it. The second lives here and loves it. :001_smile:

I've always wanted to plan a trip around Route 66. I've also considered using Roadside America to find some off-the-wall places to visit.

  4. I haven't uploaded any pictures because I haven't been able to figure out how to look at other people's albums. I don't want to bother uploading pictures that only I can look at.

I think the album doesn't show up unless you've added pictures. That's kind of why I was asking who had uploaded pics. I thought it'd be easier to look at albums by asking who had them instead of browsing through everyone's profiles and seeing a lot of empty albums before getting to the few that do have albums.

Then again you can set your album to private so only friends can view them, so maybe that's why they're not showing up?

  5. You've gotten great responses, so rather than repeat what some have said I'll add one thing.

For my girls, I really want for them to get out on their own and learn how to support themselves independently before getting married and starting a family. Ideally, I'd like them to get their college degree and be self-supporting before they marry and start a family, but I'm not going to insist they go to college. I just really hope they will.

I've seen so many marriages break up and ex-wives end up either in poverty or almost in poverty trying to work and raise their dc after having dropped out of college or with just a high school degree and no work experience to fall back on. Or I've seen ladies in abusive situations stay because they feel trapped and scared with nowhere to go and no way to support themselves and their dc. It's just heartbreaking, and I don't want that for my dd's.

  6. How did you decide which ones to use?

I thought of putting the annual family picture in, but then I wanted something a bit different. So I tried to find pictures that related to homeschooling somehow. Then I realized how difficult that was, because it's all just part of our lives. It felt good to really see that. But then how do you choose?

I thought about making an album for each dc, but a lot of pictures have more than just one dc in them.

Okay, I'm hoping to see some great albums, so please give me a heads-up if you have an album ... or two.

  7. We've been living overseas for 8 years and I'm really running out of ideas for Christmas presents to send back to family in the US. We only send a few gifts - my parents, my brother, dh's brother, my cousin and her dc. Any ideas? Things that are lightweight, easy to mail, sturdy enough to not break in transit, and not very expensive.

My favorite gifts to send were little English cottage refrigerator magnets. You can buy them separately or as a set. If I remember correctly, it was about $30 for a set of 5.

Here is the name and address:

If I get a chance this weekend, I'll try to take a couple of pictures so you can see what they look like. Each magnet is about 2X2, maybe smaller. I know they also made little notepads, too.

  8. Just a quickie before this gets hustled off to the "How To" board. I don't think many surf the "How To" board, so I'm posting this here first.

I noticed when I want to reply to someone who posts a message on my visitor message board, I should first click on "View Conversation" underneath their message and then type in my message. That way it shows up on their visitor message board, and they know I replied to them. At least I get a notification that I have a message, so I'm assuming you will, too.

Otherwise, if I enter a message in the box just above the list of messages on my visitor board, it just shows up on my visitor message board and they have no way of knowing I replied to them. Unless, I guess, they checked my visitor message board.

That's why I have some deleted messages on my visitor message board. Those were my own messages that I'd accidentally put there instead of the other person's visitor message board.

Also, I thought you had to be a friend before you could type a message on someone's visitor message board, but I found out today that you don't.

    HTH!

  9. Wow, it's like we've become the news media, picking apart responses, weighing nuances, and jumping to conclusions!

I've wanted to respond to several posts yesterday and today but decided against it because I'm afraid of having too much read into it or unintentionally offending someone. This is so tiring!

To heck with it, I'm just posting and I'm not going to over-analyze it before I put it out there.

We celebrate, observe, enjoy, commemorate, laugh, party, photo-op, stuff ourselves with food and treats, and generally find any excuse to have a good time with friends and family a plus in our book!

Here's hoping y'all have a wonderful day, too!

  10. Does anyone have the link to this thread from the old boards or remember what the original poster did? My oldest, who has never experienced public school needs this.

Has anyone else done similar to give their kids a taste of the "other side" and realize how much flexibility they have at home?

I'm positive this was Amy in Orlando. Maybe she posted it on her blog?

  11. Still the One by Orleans - very upbeat and a favorite

Do you know you can find one of those balloons in the shape of a heart that have a piece of a song programmed inside when you tap it? Ask your local flower shop if they have any. They may have to order it, so give yourself plenty of time.

If they can't or won't and you want to order one yourself, search online for Sing-A-Tune balloons. There's a site that sells them like 3 in a pack.

Here are a couple of sites I used to find songs for my parents' anniversary party.

  12. NorthCom? NorthCom? Sounds familiar. Does it have something to do with Blackwater? (Caution: Bush/McCain supporters may not want to click on this.)

Went to google Northcom and Blackwater. Found an interesting summary at The Internet Post called "Here to Stay, 14,000 Strong and Armed With Non-Lethal Weapons - America, Meet Your New Local Military." (Caution: Palin is mentioned in this piece and not in a positive light.)

This from the site: "Our blog covers world news on a varity of topics that we feel the main stream media in the US doesn’t cover." Just for clarification, I think this site is a Ron Paul supporter from what little I've read.

I did notice the piece lambasting Frank about the Fannie Mae connection.

I also noticed the roll call on votes for and against the bill "(t)o amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide earnings assistance and tax relief to members of the uniformed services, volunteer firefighters, and Peace Corps volunteers, and for other purposes (emphasis added).

  13. I like how one can search by tags. So when people are all "I hope this doesn't get bitter" we will be able to find that thread a year later.

Honestly? I haven't used the tags to search here. :blushing:

I figure they're too vague and will pull up way too many posts.

Well, I think we will probably need to search all the threads on booKcases or teA! So, those will come in quite handy.

    Must've missed those stories.

    Well...I can't add more tags.

    :(

It looks like 25 is the limit.

Bad tags, bad tags, what cha gonna do?

    I need a high five smilie! :D

It say this post has the maximum number of tags allowed. So I guess the total you can have for each post is 26.

Oh, I thought it was 25. Plenty anyway.

Yes, I really wanted to go through and give all posts a tag of "animal", "vegetable", or "mineral".

    Or... "earth", "wind", or "fire"?

    "person", "place", "thing", or "idea"

    or...

I'm afraid I couldn't care less about searching by tags. But I consider the entertainment value high.

And I also like that I can hover over a tag and see what a post is *really* about (okay, not if they're really all just labeled, "animal", "vegetable", or "mineral" -- I'll grant you that). I mean, if someone has posted about how the end of the world is coming because "them thar furriners" are going out to destroy us all, and it's starting with her inability to buy her favorite brand of cookies.... But the thread is labeled "canning tomatoes" in the poster's attempt to disguise her true purpose... Well, in that case, I appreciate having tags that say "eschatology", "xenophobia" and "whining"!

Oh, those are good. Red, white or blue? Lions, tigers and bears, oh my? Grammar, logic or rhetoric? North, east, west, south? Breakfast, lunch, dinner? John, Paul, George, Ringo?

Entertainment value -- yes, that's a good way to see it. I missed the canning tomatoes one, too, dagnabbit.

Thanks again, everyone, for the kind words and for helping play tag.

  14. But to use "tea," as you say, as a tool of punishment and manipulation, is a bad, bad way to deal with things. In the end, it is just another way to create wedges and disharmony in your realtionship. If anything, I would be pouring out so much tea that dh didn't have time to even think of his parents, LOL!:D Use tea to create harmony and communication!!!

Isn't this still a form of manipulation though? :001_huh:

Not trying to single you out or anything, it just popped into my head when I read this. I think it's the phrase "use tea" that's throwing me for a loop. I guess I don't think of "using" it. Giving and receiving? Kind of like gift-giving, maybe that's more in line with my thought process. Or maybe it should be bodily process. ;)

    {{hugs}}

While I agree about the tea, I wanted to validate YOUR feelings.

I'd have the same reaction. It's clear from your post that he's engaged with them on a level and in priority order that would bother many wives; I know it would bother me!

    Well-said, Joanne.

PollyOR, I hope you didn't feel like you were getting kicked in the teeth while you were down. I was sympathizing with you and wanted to post earlier but had no time. I'm glad there were some encouraging posts here for you. And I hope you and your dh are able to resolve this ... soon! :(
