Also note that if you go with ES you will need to purchase or borrow quite a few books so see if you can look at the book list to determine total cost.

I have Elemental Science grammar Bio, Earth & Chemistry. I printed out Bio and Earth. I don't think the Bio will work for us. It is a little too basic. I want a broad view with more vocab and structure. So then we printed out Mr. Q's classical science. IT is beautiful and complete, but I didn't like how it was laid out. I'd love charts with kingdoms to show how it all is laid out. It also seems to be a little OVER our heads! Oy. So then we got RSO bio and we are starting that. I think this is up our alley. Especially since it is our first year of HS. I need to keep science easy and this fits the bill. I already have additional books (that I purchased for Elemental Science) to help beef it up. Since I bought ES downloads it is basically a sunk cost since it is illegal to sell. I *might* try the earth science when we get to it, but I'll probably go with RSO again b/c of its straight forwardness & ease of use.

I got mine used (levels 1 through 4 for 100.00). I only have the letter tiles and standard set per level. I have one full set of cards through level 4. I laminated the dividers that came with the student packs. I think I heard they don't include dividers with the new version of student pack?
I'm hoping to get away with one set of cards for 2 students working at their own pace. Time will tell if it will work but I plan to do "Brian" "Ruby" and "Both" dividers in my review section so that I know who needs review for each card type :) It really gets expensive when you need to blow through several levels in one year.
The AAS Chatterbox has a forum post about organization which shows 1.00 Sterilite containers at Walmart which work well for storage.

There are ways to override your toner alerts - I did this with my Brother MFC-9320cw (which I LOVE) and it worked like a champ:
1. With power on, open the toner access main door (You will get a "door open" message in the LCD.)
2. Hit the "Clear/Back" button and... ta-dah!!! you go right to the "Toner Reset Menu" (cue Vienna Boy's choir sounds here).
3. Using the up ^ Down > "Search" arrow buttons, you can then scroll through reset options for each of the printer's [4] toner cartridges!
Code: B. = black; C. = cyan; M. = magenta and Y. = yellow
4. For each for these cartridges is the option to reset for low yield = S (small?) or High Yield = H
5. Using the number keypad, select option #1 (to reset each to the size you have installed.
6. Hit the "Clear/Back" button to get out of the menu, close door ad the problem is FINALLY solved.
you can also google "toner override" to find other solutions. I also found this tip on a forum, but I haven't personally tried it.
Yes I did find this but this model doesn't work that way or even have those buttons! After looking for programming changes, we found this little gear option. I still need to change it but am afraid. I'm going to wait til DH can do it :)

3rd Grade
* Sonlight Core B and Core C (attempting to mix the two and drop what I wish to make it doable) - History & Literature. I'm tweaking the bible to go through Leading Little ones to God every day and then move on to Telling God's Story mid year. We also read from a NIV bible which has pictures and tells the stories to children with NIV words and a little paraphrasing.
* AAS (I broke down and bought the first 4 levels used as I think my son needs to learn the rules) - the words will be too easy for him so I may add in HTTS words.
* GWG 3 & WWW 3
* Wordly Wise (we'll see how it goes - might drop it)
* Math Mammoth light blue - level 3A & 3B hoping to cruise on to 4. Also have Miquon but don't know how I'll work it into the schedule.
* Evan Moore Daily Geography plus additional Geography books.
* RSO Biology and hopefully moving on to Earth Science mid to late year.
* Abeka Health - we'll see - might just glance through the workbook together.
* Home lessons on the keyboard
My 2nd grader will do Sonlight along with us and then her own level of Math and Language arts.

We got this from Costco: http://www.brother-usa.com/MFC/ModelDetail.aspx?ProductID=MFC9970CDW
The cartridges are a major ripoff! It operates on a counter so even if you use toner save and never print photographs, it will not allow you to use your C, M, Y toner past a certain page count. We tried purchasing off brand toners but the machine didn't recognize them and we had to send them back. Just today all three of my colors ran out even though they are still printing out fine. Since the counter says they toner is gone, the machine won't run color print until I replace all three. Now tell me, what are the chances that all three colors will run out exactly at the same time?
My husband ordered a contraption that is supposed to trick the counter. He said all of today's printers seem to do this (as a way to generate money since people have to constantly purchase more toner cartridges). He said that Brother toner cartridges are using a mechanical counter. So *if* this little contraption works (which just arrived in today's mail) - then this would be a pretty good situation.
If it doesn't work we are going to be shelling a lot of money out on toner. Oy!

I liked "The Help" OK.
I have a few favorites:
The Outlander Series (there is some sex scenes and sometimes it is over the top, but overall these are really exciting books - sex aside).
Harry Potter Series - I honestly don't know if or when my kids will be allowed to read it, but I loved it.
Charles Dickens - David Copperfield. This is the most endearing, heart-warming book I've ever read. It starts off a little slow (and takes some time to adjust to the language), but it is SO worth it as you journey with this sweet young man :)
Likewise, I've been enjoying Jane Austen books recently.

I want my kids to enjoy homeschooling and have fun. They just came out of public school and they had fun at times there. I'm not competing with PS, but we do have that memory to compare so if they came home and were bored all day, it would be pretty challenging to convince them that they WANT to be home with me :D I'm not saying they get to make the decisions, but their wanting to learn at home is something that I would prefer!
Secondly, when they get bored, their minds wander. Just today they were getting tired from our reading. So I decided to have them pretend to frolick in a meadow (we were learning about sheep that had just been shorn). Boy did that ever wake them up! It took a few minutes, but their minds were fixed back on the story when they returned from their crazy frolicking.
I'm starting to think that my son is an auditory learner and my daughter is visual. He picks up a LOT from our read-aloud time (sonlight) but my dd picks up very little. Yet she can spend hours working in workbooks or writing in a journal or doing a hands-on project. So we will need to do a little bit of all to help them each learn and retain what we are teaching.

I picked it up from the LIbrary and thumbing through it, I felt it was a little too complex!

What age? We are going through "leading little ones to God" which would fit the bill.
Our church also did John Piper's Sunday School curriculum which was the "A, B, C's" of His characteristics. http://www.childrendesiringgod.org/curriculum/curricula.php?id=5&curriculaId=4

I got the PDF mainly b/c I wanted to save $ and b/c I wanted it NOW ;D I ended up printing a full set for me (duplex - 2 sided) and then only the worksheets for each kid. It was a lot of printing! Also, you can't resell pdf files.
If I were to get preprinted I would probably get the loose leaf so I could make copies of the student pages. Or I'd get the book + student pages like you mentioned.
-
I'm actually a bit relieved to hear it is on the "easy" side! We have a lot of curriculum and I know I can beef it up more if I wish. We do journals for outings, and I also have scott Foresman workbooks printed out at teach grade level to supplement (there are grammar and writing exercises in the free workbook).
-
You can try a lot of SWB's books from the Library for the first month or two and see how it works for your family before purchasing them permanently. I can get WWE, FLL and SOTW from the Library.
-
Amazon is cheaper. You might want consumables as pdf so you can easily print multiple copies. So I would buy consumables from peace hill and the textbooks from amazon.
-
Having only thumbed through it and only just starting to homeschool - it does look quite independent. It does a 5 day/week schedule which doesn't exactly fit my plan but I think it is simple enough to squeeze a few days together each week.

This is a great idea! I really like it! Unfortunately, I'll just have to sit back in awe... because it's a bit too crafty for me to ever get around to actually creating myself.
I came across a few simple chore charts after a quick online search, but ended up making our own version using Microsoft Excel. I laminated it so that my little man can check off his completed tasks with a wet erase marker.
I love the magnetic idea too! We have been using dtlk laminated sheets. I just PM'd you - I LOVE your setup. Very cute and simple :)

They have some nice geography and reading comprehension downloads I would like :)
-
Jumping around in MM could definitely cause confusion.
That is what I'm hoping :) We've been moving along and they are following it better as they become accustomed to the style. My dd definitely needed the review and my ds needed some work on some of the more abstract concepts to get ready for the next level next year.
-
I just bought it too :) I noticed there are two files you could download and one is just a sample so perhaps the reviewer at currclick only opened that file.
It is outdated with the most recent calendar available from 2010 but those can be found on the internet I'm sure. There are some good printables there :)
-
Would it HAVE to be provided by AAS? Couldn't anyone create an APP with letters and phonograms to be used in the desired fashion?
I like the idea but we don't have technology that advanced :D
-
I did too. I believe it is for duplexing (double sided printing)
-
the bummer about e-books is that you can't re-sell them.
-
I was wondering this b/c it could possibly help with instruction. We've been using last year's grade level as review and sometimes they get frustrated by the instruction of MM. It isn't always very clear. Perhaps this is b/c we are jumping around and not going sequential.

I think I might try this with my kiddos. Pianamals looks good too but I thought I'd try this first.
My adopted daughter asked me the question I knew would come someday
