  1. We do to a point. Our year is kind of light so it balances everything out. Plus, we lean towards the unschooling side of things and see learning a bit differently than just textbook guided...if that makes sense.

But, we live in Washington State and are summer beach bums. So, we need to enjoy the good weather while it's here. I'll take summers off or heck maybe just the winters when my dh figures out how to get us back to So. Cali:D

  2. I don't know if any of this has been added...but it stuff I didn't really see that I would want.

    Coffee probably instant espresso

bulk tea with a couple of good tea strainers

    instant falafel http://www.fantasticfoods.com/

    instant refried beans

    instant brown rice

    instant mashed potatoes

canned chili (could be topped with cornbread for a good filling casserole)

    cashews

    pistachios

Trader Joes has really good canned corn. It's almost fresh tasting and not canny at all!

cornbread mix (for me wheatless so I might have to make my own)

    cocoa for sure!

aseptic packages of soymilk (don't forget chocolate) and tofu

    tofu pudding mix

    molasses

instant shake mix powder (nutiva is good)

    jetboil

heavy duty cookware like a good kettle and a cast iron dutch oven (you could throw this in a fire and it would be ok)

spices (curry, italian, salt, pepper, dried hot peppers, cinnamon)

  3. I'm praying you will take some steps to talk with someone.

Are you the primary person taking care of relatives? Please delegate to other family members right away. Tell them it's vital. Don't be a Martyr. It doesn't help anyone.

Close the books for the year. Read a book on Unschooling (skylarksings.com) and a good trashy novel. Spend time with your children really getting to know each other. Reconnect with them.

Personally, I get really depressed when I try to be hardcore everything. I know some people can be, but my children don't deal with it well. It's just not the life we live. I watch other moms who haven't figured that out yet struggle horribly and give up on homeschooling. Homeschooling is not just about the children. It's about the family.

We are all introverts in our family. So, if we are out a lot we all start whining and get depressed. We need to refuel daily. My children become obstinate and argumentative.

  4. We got a little bored of just doing Ancient History this year (SOTW). Previously my boys had a few stints in public school. We unschooled when they were home. So they would get a interest or find something in the KONOS volume I had and we would study that for awhile. It was really fun!

This year we wanted to do something more orderly. So, we tried SOTW (and a bit of MOH).

This upcoming year we are going to do both SOTW 2 and American History. We are going to start a notebook style timeline to keep track of what we are learning. I got a few BF guides on the sale board. I'm going to "schedule" the American History guide for 2 years for my oldest and let him read other library books and follow tangents on what he enjoys. My next child is doing the BF Geography guide scheduled over 2 years if need be.

We aren't getting the SOTW AG this time. We will just print out maps when needed and try to pack them with information instead of one for each chapter. We will do some notebook pages and and narrations. I'm combing chapter when I can to pack more into one week. We don't enjoy doing a lot of workbook pages. So, if we read and discuss a lot then my children are more willing to do some really beautiful notebook pages.

So, there is my jumble of relaxed learning for you;)

  5. We use the library. I check out online and use a rss feed to keep check of everything. When my children are approaching University age I will start purchasing some paperbacks because I do believe in writing and highlighting in those books. I think it's good practice for what they need to do later.

If I still lived in So. Cali I might not. Our library system charge a dollar to order a book from another library in the system. So, I would probably be more picky about what we read.

Right now I just cross check through the system once a week and look at what's available for current chapters and once in the next couple of weeks. I keep track of what my children are interested in too and we look those up.

Our education is mostly literature/book based, so the library is vital. I made sure when we moved this time that we could access a library regularly. It's on the other side of the block;)

  6. The problem, for me actually, is not that it's discussed. I know what happens, why people do things, that people did things, why it hurts, why people are defensive about issues.

But, it's not logical to be studying literature (or just about any subject for that matter) and to actually call students and their belief systems/ideology etc. absolute non-sense (that's a mild term).

  7. I'm a University student right now at a State University. It's completely not ok the way some of my Professors treat these issues. All kinds of people have done some horrible things. It's all right to sharpen the iron, it's all right to make people think.

It shouldn't be ok to call people who have any belief in a creator complete morons. But, it happens.

I'm at a standstill right now and this plays a huge part in it. I'm trying to finish my BA in English. My MLIS won't have any reason for religion to be discussed.

If it's public (and just like public school) I believe a professor should really open his own eyes, look around a classroom and acknowledge that his students come from all walks of life. Discuss the literature, what happened during that period. Does it have an impact on today? Don't berate people then or now. It's really illogical and it's hard for me to take out more loans and owe more money for idiots. I've found some gems, though.

    Rant over.

  8. Can the mom try homeschooling her at all? It's amazing how my sicknesses went away when school was over.

Has she been tested for Celiacs disease? Doctors hate to test for this because there are so many misunderstandings around it. Like for instant you need to have family members with it. Not true since so many people are undiagnosed. She should have a blood test, a biopsy if needed/desired, and a stint on a Gluten-Free diet.

  9. I know Sonlight does this in some upper levels. My son is very Science orientated. I would like to give him somethings to chew on. Any suggestions?

He gets frustrated and I think it would be wonderful if he could really start to study the differences in the theories of Science (Creationist, Evolutionist, Intelligent Design).

Am I making sense? I'm thinking of starting now, so we both have the time to work through some goods books/studies.

Lucky for him my Aunt (His great Aunt) is a Scientist. She gets him Answer in Genesis Magazine. We have other materials she has provided us with. She is always ready for a wishlist:) I don't want a major study this next few years. We will be starting Beautiful Feet History of Science and Apologia Physical Science this upcoming year (probably stretch it for 2 years). So, this would be more supplemental.

But, I think he is ready for deeper understanding.

  10. We are speading up SOTW 1 by combining chapters. This is my 11 year old s first cycle. He knows a lot of the subjects from his own past studies (we were child-led before, so I don't mind).

Just look through and see which chapters that are in a row or pretty close and combine those for one week. Skip anything that you feel might be difficult for your children right now. My feeling is that they will see it again.

Do the maps, perhaps one or two coloring pages/worksheets and a narration that covers the entire section (so if it's 4 chapters than one narration for the the entire 4 chapters).

  11. I'm not in school (again) and so I get to actually pick my own reading.

SWB's Ancient History book. I borrowed this from the library. I'm wondering if I should buy it at this point. It seems like a keeper.

    Homeschooling our Children, Unschooling ourselves.

Thanks to this thread I think I can get to 50 on my reading list at my blog. I really need a nice even number:tongue_smilie:

  12. I find it interesting and a bit of a relief...

that so many of you are loosening up a bit during this period. Some even mentioned the U word. Sometimes I worry that our relaxed period might have done some harm. But, that's not what I'm actually seeing. It's given him the time (and his parents for that matter;)) the chance to really figure out who is and what he needs.

Thanks for the all the replies!

    Heather

  13. My son will be going into 6th grade this next school year. I feel like it might help us both if we had some kind of goals. We only started folding in WTM ideas this year. So far we are pretty happy. Backstory...My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS a little over a year ago. He has been in public school twice with homeschooling in between. I've given him a lot of freedoms and I've been happy with that. He has taken this time to really work on his special needs. He has been doing quite well this year. Back to my thoughts...

The only thing I have thus far is...

    1. get "caught up" in Math

    2. finish 1 cycle of History by 8th grade (We are in our first cycle of the History using SOTW).

    3. Start more stringent studies in Science (He loves science, but we have been totally child led up till this year).

    4. And, I'm thinking since he is so Science orientated and a Creationist that we should start doing some kind of studies about the different theories and how to defend your choices.

    5. Formal writing/grammar programs beginning in 6th grade. (Not sure about my goals here. Again he hasn't had anything formal. He is just starting Writing Strands 3).

I would love to see what others expect and not just of special needs kids (that's why I put it here). I have two more boys following him and I want to be better prepared.

  14. I'm thinking of introducing some U.S. History into our year next year. We should be on SOTW 2 by then. This year we got bored of just doing Ancient History and ended up taking breaks anyway. We are only about 1/3 through SOTW 1 and hopefully we can get through it this summer. I really want my soon to be 6th grader to get through one cycle of History by High School.

So, I'm thinking of how to intersperse some U.S. or more modern History into our schedule.

So, I either do both each term or I rotate and do term 1 U.S., term 2 SOTW2 etc...

    Any thoughts?

  15. Have her take a good long soak in the bath. Then take a cotton ball and soak it in alcohol or tea tree oil. Take a clean pair of tweezers and pick off pieces of it and try to make a little ball. Then squish that little ball into the pocket under the toe nail. Change everyday. This will clean, heal it and keep it open. It can, also, help it grow better. Never, ever pick or clip off the sides of your nails. Keep them longer or shorter...whatever keeps them from having the nail grow into that corner.
