  1. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You are all so helpful!

One more question - What's the weather like the last week of February? What should we pack? We'll check the weather report before we go, but in some places 60 feels balmy, and in others it feels chilly. (Good advice about the ponchos).

  2. I've never felt guilty. Flattered if it's a quiet, kind, and appropriate response. Embarrassed if it's over the top. Annoyed and disgusted if it's inappropriate. But I don't think I've ever felt guilty. But I've also never worn anything scanty either. I honestly don't know how I'd feel if I was dressed in a bikini, because I'm too shy to ever try.

  3. In a month we'll be taking our first Disneyland trip!! We're very excited! We've been planning this trip for about half a year. (And yes, the measles thing is not a high point, but since we've all been vaccinated, and dh and I have had semi-recent titers, we'll keep to our plans).

Most of our great advice so far has come from this board. So now I'm looking for more. :)

Since the time is approaching I just want to make sure we've got our ducks in a row. Here's what we've got so far:

We'll fly in on a Monday and have dinner at Goofy's kitchen. Reservations are made.

Tuesday will be Disneyland, with Fantasmic on the Go reservations.

Wednesday will be California Adventure. World of Color and Ariel's Grotto are both closed for renovation, so we will miss those. :(

Thursday and Friday we'll use our park hopper passes wherever we feel like after those first two days.

Saturday's breakfast will be Surfs Up! and then off to the airport for home.

We're in a hotel across the street so we can take the kids back and forth for naps and rest time. We're planning on getting the Safeway to deliver some groceries so we don't break the bank on eating out for every meal. We plan on eating out about once a day, and having one special Disney treat each day.

We subscribed to RideMax, but the choices are overwhelming. This is where we need help. What do we want to hit for sure? What rides should not be missed? What about entertainment? Any shows/events we want to be sure to see? Anything we shouldn't waste our time on?

And do you have any other tips for our first trip to Disneyland?

  4. The less than fewer distinction is a made up zombie rule*. It has no basis in objective reality. It was literally invented by a dude in 1770, some guy named Robert Baker, whom nobody remembers because this was his sole claim to fame.

You understand your native language just fine. Less and fewer is a stylistic choice, not a grammar choice. Don't let senseless pedantry eat your brain.

    * Technical term.

I finally got around to reading this article. It was great! Thanks for posting it. You seem to know quite a lot about language usage. I appreciate your insight.

  5. I don't really count my worries. I promise.

Yesterday I told somebody they can keep something I gave them because I'm moving and it would be "one less thing to pack." I could count the things I'm packing if I really wanted to. I just couldn't bring myself to say that it would be one fewer thing to pack. But the grammar police might come knocking on my door for that one. And I don't need one thing more to worry about. ;)

People say, "I could care less," all the time because it sounds right to them, but it sounds strange to me. "I couldn't care less" sounds much better to me, and is more correct. I was wondering if "one fewer thing..." only sounded strange to ME because I was used to hearing it wrong, while it sounded perfectly fine to those who were used to using "less" and "fewer" correctly.

  6. Sigh. I usually understand grammar, but for some reason this gives me trouble.

I understand that you use "fewer" with countable nouns. But what about the common sentence, "That's one less thing to worry about"? I seem to be counting things. Should it be, "That's one fewer thing to worry about"? That sounds awkward, but maybe just to me.

How about numbers. In math I teach my kids that 1 < 4, and I say, "One is less than four." I can count to one and four. Or do we use "less than" because we're not counting a specific noun? If that's the case, what about when the math books try to apply life and have something like "1 goat < 5 goats"? Or in algebra, "5X < 10X"? You could say I'm counting "Xs" there. Should I start using "fewer than" for the "<" sign in some cases?

Please help me understand my native language!

  7. How big was his first buck? And he's only 10?

It was 3 prongs. But he's not 10, he's 32. (DH, not DS) ;). Dh has always wanted to be a hunter, but it was not possible before for various reasons (location, time commitment, etc.) But now he's in a place where he can. I had to laugh last week because on the first day of deer season we saw all sorts of Facebook posts from local friends showing their kids' first bucks, but dh didn't have his yet. You have to start somewhere though :)

  8. Sounds like we need a meat grinder :). We're processing it ourselves, so we can cut it any way. Thanks for all the ideas and keep them coming! There is plenty of meat, so we can try lots of recipes.

  9. I've often wondered about the cats on the internet. I might have to check the podcast. I agree that I don't want to see gross body part pictures on FB. (and I agree that perky parts ought to stay off too). It seems that I'm not giving mason jars enough credit.

I know it's really popular, but twitter baffles me. I just don't get it. Maybe I'm getting old.

  10. My 10.5 year old usually throws about a tantrum a week. She had a year or two without much in the way of meltdowns, but now with her body changing (with how much she's eating we can tell she's heading into a BIG growth spurt) the emotions can catch up with her. It's understandable, but not acceptable. She does not get what she wants when she throws a tantrum. But we remain calm and help her calm down too.

I remember having those sorts of meltdowns until I was around 11. I remember my last one. I felt so silly afterward that I never did it again.

I cringe at the way I KNEW how to parent before I had kids.

  11. That's a wonderful idea, and we've done that in other areas we lived in. Here we're an hour and a half from the temple, and I can't really leave the nursing baby for that long. So we bring the kids along and find a babysitter near the temple. Since we're not ever in that city for any other reason, hiring them other times wouldn't work. But when the baby is older, maybe we'll be able to use the local YW more that way.

  12. Our favorite temple babysitters are when we trade babysitting with other parents who want to go to the temple too. But sometimes we've had to ask teenagers to babysit. I always try to pay, and they always refuse. It's wonderful to have the youth so willing to do service, but I always feel guilty if I ask the same youth again, since I now know they won't accept payment. It's a little more difficult if we want to attend the temple often and there are only a few available youth. I don't want to eat up their weekends, especially when they won't take any compensation.

I don't really know what I'm asking here. I appreciate their help, I really do. Is there any way to give back to these kind youth? Some way to show my appreciation? Maybe if you have teens you might have a perspective I don't have. Or is there some way to attend the temple often, when there aren't really any other couples we could trade babysitting with right now, yet not take advantage of the service of the youth?

We have gone seprately a lot lately, and will likely do so again rather than ask too much of babysitters. But we'd really rather go together.

  13. My dd10 needs to find some more reading books. She's been drifting towards the twadle section, and though I don't mind a little junk in moderation, I would prefer she reads good writing most of the time.

She can read probably at about a 6th grade level.

    She loves animals, especially cats.

    She loves fairy tales.

She likes to read long series.

I know she would love The Hobbit or the Chronicles of Narnia but she won't pick them up unless I force the issue. She doesn't like suggestions that come from me, because I'm mom.  :001_rolleyes:

Any suggestions for books with decent writing for her?

I know there are plenty of websites full of reading lists, but are there any you know of that stick to fairly well-written suggestions? Then I could just point her that way and suggestions wouldn't be coming from me.
