  1. I was fortunate to have an awesome driver's ed teacher who showed us how. It really is just following a formula. Works every time. I've impressed many passengers with my skills.

ETA: I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I need to parallel park on the left, so I don't know if that would be harder. I imagine it might take some getting used to.

  2. PIE, I'm just popping in to your thread for a moment, because we don't buy anything at yard sales, and I can't contribute to that (though I have been enjoying reading about everyone else's fabulous finds!).

You may already know this, but you should not let your daughter wear the pointe shoes. Use them for decoration only. It's dangerous and possibly damaging to the feet to wear someone else's pointe shoes. They look cute hung on a nail or hook on the wall, though!

I see now I wasn't clear. He didn't buy pointe shoes. Just those shoes that have all the toes separated out, like this. I guess they're called FiveFinger shoes. Thanks for the concern though. :)

  3. So dh came home from a yard sale.

He bought a giant box of books - some of which we already own, some we both really wanted, and then a Necronomicon.

He also bought toe shoes for our daughter.

But then he bought a BARITONE HORN for me (I played one as a teen, but haven't since).

And as I was razzing him for his thoughtfulness, he dared me to start a thread.

So what weird/random things did your spouse buy from a yard sale when you weren't looking? (or what weird/random things did YOU buy?)

  4. Hmm, maybe this wasn't meant to be. I just went searching for some of these threads, and it appears many were deleted. Possibly because many of them were riddled with celebrity kilt pictures that they had to be taken down for copyright reasons. Or maybe we're just not supposed to bring up some of the unpleasant past.

But I'm sure there are some epic threads out there that didn't get nasty or post celebrity pictures. And I still don't know who Phred is. Maybe I will never know.

  5. Is there a board history thread out there? It seems like a group of classical educators ought to understand the importance of preserving history. :)

If there is one, where? If not, could we start one please? All you who are familiar with board history could post links of epic threads.

I've been around here for years now, but on another thread Phred was mentioned, and I didn't recognize that one. Who is Phred? Were those threads deleted, or could somebody post them?

I'm on a tablet now, but later, if there is interest, I'll dig up the threads I remember most, like the cupcakes, shopping carts, or crockpots. And of course the Great Kerfluffle. Maybe even the one where the mom kept getting run of the sidewalk by a stroller lady. I don't remember if Carol from IL's entertaining threads were deleted, I'll have to check. Those would be worth posting too.

But in the meantime, who is Phred?

  6. I have mixed feelings as well. It'd be nice to have an international church program like they have for the girls. But having an Eagle is more widely recognized.

We've only recently started cub scouts, and it is a great program. But my ward isn't so good with it, so we do most of it at home, and I have to remind the leaders of what has to be done as a group. Otherwise they wouldn't earn any of the awards. And it'd be nice to have those nights free.

We might sign up for a community pack instead. They are closer to home, meet less often, and are better organized. There is a meeting tonight. We just have to see if skipping any Sunday activities would keep my boys from fulfilling necessary requirements.

  7. I have a Canon PowerShot ELPH (300 HS ~~~ whatever that means) and I puffy heart it. It's an older model at only 12.1megapixels. I paid $99 for it around four years ago. I just checked Amazon and found a 16megapixel one at $109 ---- the price varies/goes up for colors.

I am a point-and-shoot person but my camera has tons of settings. I sat in on a crashed a basic photography class and was able to do most of the stuff that others did with their fancier cameras. My camera takes awesome photos. Dh has a very pricey (and BIG) Nikon and he prefers my palm-sized PowerShot over his. In fact, while on vacation, he always has my camera in his pocket and I have to ask him for it. :glare:

I took my kids' senior photos with my wee Canon and received kudos from friends and family for how they turned out. It saved a LOT of money! I looked online for posing and props ideas and I am very proud of my almost-free photos (Wal-Green's printing is very inexpensive!).

I found how-to books (library or used book stores) and online tutorials (free) to be very helpful in learning how to take better photos; even better than the class I crashed --- it just moved too fast for me. Real photography requires just too much planning and strategy for me, though, so I'm still a point-and-shoot person. :coolgleamA: I guess in my heart I mostly just want "pictures" and not "photographs".

Thank you! I'm going to go look at that camera now. Do you remember titles of any particularly helpful books?

  8. My phone is fairly new, but also on the cheap side. I think it's a Motorola, but I don't know what kind. It doesn't seem to have a flash, so only outdoor pictures turn out well. Though that just could be that I don't know how to use it properly yet. My camera and phone knowledge is lacking. I have no good reason, but I'd rather not have a fancier phone. I didn't really want a smart phone at all, but for other reasons have one.

Anyway, thanks for the camera advice!

  9. It is time again to get a new camera. The old one broke. My phone is not cutting it. I know nothing beyond point-and-shoot photography. I would really like my photos to look at least somewhat nice. Not blurry or grainy or badly colored, even when involving some motion or low light. (Yes I do touch them up a little with my computer, but I'm not an expert, and there is only so much touching up I can do.)

So what do I look for in a camera? Any suggestions of a particular camera that someone with little experience can use that won't break the bank?

And what about my photography skills. Anywhere I can find basic, helpful information on taking good pictures?

    Thanks :)

  10. That's funny.  Years ago another mom and I were choosing books for a class we were doing together for some youngish children.  She nominated Julie of the Wolves, and I demurred, because I remembered from sixth grade that the book included Julie being raped by the boy she was promised to marry or was actually already married to since infancy by some agreement between their parents.  The other mom disagreed that anything like that was in the book.  I showed her the passage in the book and, after reading it, she said that it did not depict a rape and she didn't see what my problem was with it.  I couldn't find out what she thought was actually going on in the passage, though.  The boy does use the word "mate."

I haven't read it in a while, but I thought he wanted to, but she got away. Hmm, maybe I ought to reread it.

  11. I had a good friend who came from an arranged marriage culture that immigrated to the US. She told me that about half her friends and family married for love and the other half had arranged marriages. She was one who dated and married for love. She said that with her friends and family, the happiness in marriages and rates of divorce were pretty much the same for both groups. I know it was only anecdotal evidence, but I found her observation interesting.

  12. W6D3 done.

Do you have a 5K race in mind PIE?

I did a 5K on August 1, and I think that'll be good enough for me this year. I'm just happy that I can jog for 30 minutes without stopping. Though with school starting up it's going to be hard to find time. I'm putting my big kids in public school this year, so nobody will be home to babysit the little ones, and I really don't like waking up early or staying up late to jog. Oh well, I'll figure something out.

  13. I've seen some credit cards that can be used on any airline. Are the ones tied to specific airlines better?

The problem is that I'm not quite sure which airline we'll be flying on the most. And due to our location, it's likely we'll be taking different airlines for different legs of the trip. If it works just as well, a card that works for any airline would be lovely. BUT I don't know enough to know if those cards are somehow not as good as the others.
