  1. Praying for everyone. I feel for that mama. My dd was not nearly as premature as the twins, but I remember the pumping and trying to be at the hospital a lot (where there was almost no place to pump), etc. etc. It was very frustrating and exhausting and I didn't have an infection. I hope everyone is better soon.

I have occasionally gotten very dizzy from allergies and my doctor said to take meclizine when I get the dizziness. It really helps with the dizziness but does make me sleepy.

  2. Deciding on art for my DD for 5th in the fall. Umbrella school will buy one of these programs for us (Artistic Pursuits, Meet the Masters, or Atelier). I have not used or seen (other than websites) any of these. They each look good for one reason or another. Things I am looking for (in order of importance):

    - covers elements and principles

    - directions clear enough for good results (she's rather visual)

    - independent as possible

    - covers great works/artists

So, what do you think?? I can't have everything, can I ?:glare:

Okay, I really shouldn't be posting, because we've just barely started using Meet the Masters. But so far I'm very pleased with it and I think it has all four of your requirements. Have fun choosing!

  3. ... Many children are just not ready to enjoy structured group activities at this age. There's no reason for her to participate, just because everyone else does. .....

:grouphug: to the OP. It takes time. You are not a failure. Don't let anyone imply that you are.

:iagree: :iagree: :iagree: You are definitely NOT a failure! I can relate a little as my dd is very sensitive and is absolutely not interested in doing some of the things her friends do. But I have seen a big change in her over the last couple of years. Right now she is really enjoying her first official swim class. If we had forced her to take swimming 2/3 years ago (when many children start), I think it would have been a very negative experience.

I have to cut my reply short, as I've been spending too much time on the computer. I am sure you will take time to pray/meditate and think before making any decisions. Your dd may just need more time to mature. She may need therapy. But one thing is certain: a child having separation anxiety does NOT mean that you are a bad parent!!!!

  4. Hi Gratitude! My dd is starting 3rd grade soon. HOD Preparing Hearts should be here in a few days! It is going to be a great year. :) I am also very interested in Veritas Press and think you would like that also.

There are so many great things about HOD, especially Preparing. One thing I appreciate is that almost all the cost is books (wonderful, wonderful books). Another thing I really appreciate is that the tm has so much valuable Bible study, info, guidance, great poetry, etc. in it. There aren't very many tms that I think are really worth it, but HOD's tms are worth the price. Well, I've only used Bigger so far, so i don't know about the other tms. :)

It can be a really tough decision. I'm praying for you.

  5. Someone mentioned they had started a latin program and it was all on dvd. Unfortunately before I could find out more info from her, she had to go. So does anyone know what she is talking about? Can anyone tell me anything about this?

We are doing Logos Latin (it is dvd and workbook) and really like it.

  6. I am bringing home my son from PS who will be in 4th grade this fall. The only thing I am really struggling to figure out for our curriculum is where to start in history. I keep second guessing myself. I was going to use CHOW and do an overview of world history in one year, so that we can start with ancient history next year in 5th. Part of me just wants to do Modern History where he'd be if we had started from the beginning. I also can't find a reading list to go along with CHOW, so that's driving me crazy. I'd really like to use real books along with CHOW (which I own). Ideas?

You might be interested in Heart of Dakota's Preparing Hearts program, or at least seeing what lit HOD schedules with CHOW. My dd is doing Preparing next year and we are both really looking forward to it. Preparing Hearts is considered to be one of the best HOD programs and it uses CHOW.

Hope you have a great year with your son!

  7. That seems like a really good idea! I am going to have to consider doing that. I have looked at a few samples but will definitely be looking at more. I should probably look at LOE, too.

While you are on the Milestone Ministries website, I recommend looking at their activity books....and the coloring books....oh, they have some great readers too.....:D

  8. Apologies for beginning yet another spelling thread! I am trying to decide on a spelling program for my two older children.

DD is almost 10, reads well, spells so-so. We did a couple of years of Building Spelling Skills and dropped spelling completely, because it just seemed like so much busywork. I am regretting that now, as she seems to struggle a bit with spelling. I would like her to learn her phonics rules.

    ...

R&S looks to be a simple workbook approach, which is really where I had hoped to go with spelling. I am unsure, however, where I would start DD (10). I am also worried about retention. Everyone raves about retention with AAS, but I am not so sure with R&S. I also don't want it to seem like busywork, the way BSS did.

I have read several threads on both of these, but feel free to post links you think would be helpful!

Sorry for the long post. I would appreciate any input!! Thanks!

Well, I can only tell you what I'm going to try. ;) Obviously I don't know how it's going to turn out! My dd is almost 8 and is a fantastic reader. I, too, want her to learn phonics (she mostly just seemed to pick up reading). We have done almost no spelling instruction and she wants to know how to spell. I just ordered (today) R&S Spelling Grades 3 and 4 and the Grade 2 Phonics. I will probably use the phonics as a reference, to supplement the phonics in the spelling. I imagine you have looked at the Milestone Ministries website? They have nice samples of most of their books. (I ordered Spelling 4 for future use, in the hope this will work).

I also ordered Uncovering the Logic of English by Denise Eide to increase my knowledge of the subject. I might order her spelling games at some point.

AAS would not result in retention here, as it would drive me crazy and I would drop it. ;) I'm sure it's a great program but it's definitely not for us.

I'm also trying Climbing to Good English. Shurley English is very solid but I just do not care for it.

Rod & Staff looks great and is so inexpensive. It seems to get positive comments here on WTM forum.

  9. I'm sorry; it's really tough, isn't it? I identify with some of what you wrote. We have never pursued adoption; I was interested in adoption for a while but do not feel that it is for us. I would love to have another baby, but I'm 45 so that is very unlikely. My dd (almost 8) has been asking for a sibling. She would be such a great sister. I honestly think I will always have some sadness about this until I am in heaven.

I don't think 37 is too old at all to adopt. I hope you and your dh will be able to have some good talks about this and come to a resolution.

  10. Done going back and forth about it, at long last. I usually have it approximately figured out in February!

I typed it all out here, if you're curious.

But mostly, I just wanted to share a sigh of relief!

Congrats!!! I enjoyed looking at your blog. Love the green!

I just bought BraveWriter (from HSBC) to read on my ipad. I've been reading her blog a little and I love her humor. I think some of her ideas are going to be perfect for my dd!

Our tentative plan is to switch to Math Mammoth on the ipad after dd has finished her current Singapore.

So now what are you going to do with all your free time? :D

  11. I think you can and would enjoy much more snuggling through some subjects. Our switch to MCT together was a joy. Doing Song School Latin together and doing games that we made up with it was a joy. Doing rightstart math together was a joy. Every time I move away from these things my kids groan! They have plenty of independent work. I am not concerned about their developing independence. But I think if we can have fun and not drudgery and really learn, then why not? Read-alouds are so fun! And we alternate so they are reading to me frequently. Their expressive reading has really improved. I try now to alternate independent subjects with these to keep us rolling along. I stay in the room. They all say they like school. And they are learning. I do use a timer for those who need it on the more independent subjects. A timer is on right now for someone ; )

:iagree: Dd and I are working through Latin and Spanish together (I have no experience with these languages) and we are having a great time!

  12. ...

We only have two weeks left of our current school year but I'd like to change the atmosphere in our home for next school year.

My 8yo dd is a people person, very much into crafts, her personality profile says she's all about people, having fun, and interacting.

I wonder if I should just sit down and cuddle with her for every single subject- not do the work for her- just sit with her, cuddle her and interact over it with her as much as possible. I bought materials that are better suited for her, and require less independent seat work.

    ...

Your dd sounds a lot like my dd. I personally enjoy my day, especially hsing, much more when I acknowledge dd's God-given personality as I make choices and plan our day. For us, it doesn't work well for me to be out of the room much. I do go into the kitchen for a few minutes, and once I had her read to me while I was prepping the crockpot, but mostly I don't multitask during school. I try to make sure we have lots of hugs and kisses. I try to mix in some fun like "chasing" her around the house, etc. Today she practiced her crochet while I read history to her. :) I do not mean catering to her every whim, obviously; hopefully no one will misinterpret what I'm trying to say.

Sometimes my dd is fairly independent with certain things, and other times she isn't. I think it's partially her personaliy and partially her age. She is a delight and a joy to all who know her. :001_wub:

I hope I'm making sense; it's past my bedtime. ;)

  13. Go feel them. The only drawback is that they don't slide in and out of the shelf quite as easily. OTOH, the don't FALL down or off the shelf as easily. So easy to close, my son can do it without thinking he's going to clack a finger tip off.

    I love them.

We love these binders! I cannot imagine getting them for $.99! Our store offers a discount (20%?) if you buy 3 Staples products.
