would you like some free resource lists? I designed my own study of American history this year for my 2nd grade son.
I put together emails with spine page numbers and resource lists of books and websites that I found. I sent these out to several people from the board this past year. These are not daily lesson plans, but are arranged by topic.
I saved all the emails and would be willing to forward them to anyone who would like them. Just pm me your email address.
Here are the spines. Some of the spines did not cover the entire time period.
The Complete Book of US History
Scholastic's Interactive 3D Maps of US History
DK's Children's Encylcopedia of US History
This is the schedule I followed for the year.
Exploration 2 weeks
Settlement 2 weeks (Roanoke and Jamestown 1 week, Plymouth the next)
Colonial Life and American Revolution 4 weeks
Frontier Life/Lewis and Clark 2 weeks
War of 1812 1 week
Trail of Tears and Native American study 3 weeks
Westward Expansion 3 weeks (Oregon trail, Pony Express, Alamo, Gold Rush)
Slavery and underground RR - 1 week
Civil War and Lincoln 3 weeks (field trips near by)
Transcontinental RR 1 week
Pioneer Life on Plains and Wild West 3 weeks
Immigration & Statue of Liberty 1 week
Inventions 2 weeks
Panama Canal/Right to Vote 1 week
WW I 1 week
Depression 1 week
WW II 2 weeks
Civil Rights 1 week
Space Race 1 week
Wow, this is great timing! I just started (today!) Amer. History with my soon-to-be second grader. I've been needing to add some to it, and this would be so helpful. I pm'd you. Thank you!

Just wanted to get some opinions, especially from CC community members and tutors. We are new to classical education in general, and next year will be our first doing CC. I still am not really sure exactly how I am to practice the memory work with the kids.
But I indicated at a meeting that I was interested in tutoring (albeit preschoolers, whom I have extensive experience with) and I was recently asked if I would tutor 8 and 9 year olds.
The compensation would be nice. I do enjoy teaching, but feel a small amount of trepidation at tackling something that I know so little about. I do know that I will receive some training.
Anyone here tutor their first year in CC and how did that work out?
Thanks for your responses.
I have never tutored in CC. My personal opinion is that you will enjoy your first year in CC more (perhaps a lot more?) if you do not tutor. You can get used to the program and watch other tutors. Just my two cents.

I am planning on enrolling my 15, 12, and 7yo in CC next fall. However, I am on the fence on if I should enroll my son, who will be 5yo in October, in CC or not. I would love to hear from others who have put their young 5yo in CC or not. Opinions??
My dd turned 6 just before we started with CC. She is advanced for her age, but I have always been glad that I didn't enroll her any earlier. I think 6 or 7 is a great age to start CC.

I think it is definitely worth reading, whether or not you are a part of CC.

I didn't see the other thread, but I read about your newest gift on your blog. Congratulations!!! My sweet dd was born at 34 weeks one day. She was 4.5 lbs. and very healthy. The first few months were difficult. She ate frequently. I got PPD. She spat up frequently, poor thing. But after the first few months, she was the happiest baby. She is a ray of light from heaven. :) Prayers and hugs.

WOO HOO! Welcome to the boards. Let me know when it comes along :)
Thanks Tina! It came! We started today. Dd reminded me this morning, "You said we could start PR after Bible, Mom!" :D She really loved how organized her notebook was - she's into organizing things (perhaps it's a reaction to how unorganized her mommy is sometimes...). I asked politely if I could borrow her clipboard sometime and she said no! I think she was only partially joking...

Funny! Something tells me I'll probably never get an essay from dd with the words bam or splat in it!

Okay, I'm just curious....how many of us are there now?
I'm in!
Hi Tina. I followed the link on your website recently and ordered Phonics Road 1. Now I'm checking the front door several times a day to see if there are any boxes sitting in the melting (yay!) snow. My dd is an excellent reader but has not received any phonics training (well, almost none). I've always wanted her to have a strong foundation in phonics but couldn't decide what to use until I learned about Phonics Road. I told my dh that this time my procrastination paid off, since I haven't wasted much money on other LA materials. :)
Have to get this off my chest

I'm sure this isn't proper "protocol" for a deacon's wife (to say I hate church :001_smile:), but I'm going to say it anyway. I can definitely identify w/the bolded. Only, in my case, it was my dad that left forever, not dh's dad. We have a great church and I try to be faithful in attending, but there are some days I choose not to go. I didn't go to church on Mother's day for years (my mom died very unexpectedly when I was in college).
I'm sorry about your difficult Father's Day. Today I made it through about 5 minutes of the sermon, went and cried in the bathroom, then went to McD for some lunch.
