  1. We are doing IEW's poetry memorization, and that's great.

Oh yes! I really recommend this! I hesitated at the price, but now I'm so glad I bought it! We have tea and poetry a couple times a week. I try to have special snacks and sometimes use nice plates. We listen to IEW, and sometimes read poetry too. Fun!

  2. I'm settled with Calvert for my son, but my younger dd is a different child and I could be open to using different materials with her.

She is a Sociable Sue who is also artistic. BUT She has an AMAZING memory. She learned all her addition and subtraction facts in a few weeks. She completed an entire year of AWANA memory work in 6 weeks, (with retention).

Particularly, if she can say it, sing it or chant it, she likes it and will remember it. So obviously she is an auditory learner.

She just has no problems learning anything, PTL...She really loves to read but not all the time. Since she is an extrovert, reading has its place in her life, for about an hour per day. Not all day, like my son.

What would you do for 3rd grade with a child like this?

She sounds a bit like my dd, except your dd is stronger on the auditory side. My dd will gladly read for two hours a day when she has the chance. I'm curious if your dd enjoys you reading to her? My dd enjoys it but I think she would rather read it herself. I have been wanting to try audio books with her. I think she would enjoy it but would probably prefer to be reading the book at the same time.

Your dd sounds like someone who would love Classical Conversations (which is not a curriculum, of course). You could either join a group or do some of it at home. We are doing a little CC at home this year. My dd really learned a lot of history last year with CC.

I'm just a newbie, but I think the Sociable Sue and artistic qualities would go very well with Heart of Dakota. :) We're using Bigger Hearts and adding lots of books and other science to it.

I hope you get more replies, because I'm interested to hear what people suggest. :)

  3. We just finished week 8 and it's going really well. I think it has helped our consistency. We did the same things but more hit or miss. HOD keeps me fro putting something on the back burner.

Yes, I think it will really improve our consistency too. It sounds like many posters are at week 8, which means I should get lots of good answers to any questions I have! :001_smile:

  4. I just bought the CTC TM and notebooking pages off of someone so I can dream about next year :)

:D I was just thinking recently that I could start to collect the books for Preparing! I have a couple of them already. Of course I'll have to hide them in my bedroom closet or somewhere so dd won't start reading them.

  5. This is our first year with HOD also. We are using Preparing with my two youngest children. I LOVE it. The boys are having so much fun with it. We just made Egyptian cartouches from salt dough. They also love Write and Draw through History. My boys have found a love for drawing that they never had before.

Wish I had found HOD a long time ago!

    God Bless,

    Elise in NC

About the drawing...dd got inspired by the picture (in the catalog) of the girl standing at an easel and she just HAD to paint twice this past week! :001_smile:

  6. Mine came just a few minutes ago -

'No, the rapture is not going to occur at midnight tonight. You still need to get to bed because we are doing school tomorrow. Your assignment will be to find the passages of the Bible that warn against trying to predict the end of the world and to figure out how many times this guy has made some prediction that hasn't come true.' :glare:

  7. Melissa, when I saw the part about your tire, I laughed. Dd did not want to go to her enrichment program today. It's a fantastic Christian program. It's dropoff; I'm not usually there unless I'm volunteering. I think dd enjoys it for the most part; she just thinks about it too much ahead of time. Anyway, I said the usual this is your Thurs. schedule, you will be fine stuff (several times). We finally get to the car. It will NOT start. I said to dd, "You haven't been praying for car trouble have you??" She grinned and started singing God answers prayer. A neighbor offered to jumpstart the car, but I didn't have the heart to accept his offer.

  8. I am so pleased and happy to find HOD and I owe a big thanks to the Hive! I think one of my first encounters with HOD came from one of those catalog threads. ;) I got my beautiful HOD catalog and thought that it had some great resources in it. But for some reason, it took me a little while to realize what a great fit HOD is for us. We have been using some of the first week online sample. I love the questions Carrie put in the Bible Study section and that it uses Proverbs. I love the poetry and hymns. I think we are going to love DITHOR, but we haven’t started it yet. We were already using Singapore math and R&S English. We are enjoying the history and science. Even though I’ve been sick some of this week, we’ve still schooled every day and enjoyed it.

My dd isn’t used to doing a lot of writing, so I will use a mixture of doing things orally (esp. R&S), being her scribe, and of course her doing some of the writing. I hope to gradually increase the amount of writing she is used to doing in one day. She is a pretty voracious reader, so I will be giving her extra books to read.

I especially appreciate how age-appropriate the guide is. I only have one child, and I am so happy that I don’t have to skip over a lot of things that are inappropriate (as I have had to do in other programs).

My guide and some books are supposed to arrive tomorrow!

  9. Having attempted to use two WinterPromise programs (Animals and CATW), these are my thoughts.

The best use of a WP catalog is to glance through it and pick a couple of books that go with whatever you are gong to study. Then order those items through Amazon or somewhere else.

I do not recommend buying the teacher's guides or WP exclusives. They are not well-written, are hard to follow, have mistakes, etc. They are also overpriced.

I like some of the books that WinterPromise uses. But in my very humble opinion, you would do better to spend most or all of your hs budget elsewhere.

  10. I haven't read the replies  but here's my two cents...

I would start searching for really hard core adventure vacations. Safaris in Africa without a guide... just a map, a compass, a machete and a canteen. Trips to South America in guerrilla territory. Arctic adventures. Climbing mountains, hiking country long trails. Then, when you see a free brochure, order it.

When dh notices all the maps and plans for insanity, just tell him you're planning out your (plural) retirement :D Besides, planning trips one never takes is a great hobby. I love it :p

:lol::lol: I really lost it when I got to the machete and canteen. Thanks for the laughs!

  11. The UPS man showed up at the door today with a box from Amazon. DS3 got very excited when he saw it. "Yay! It's books! Is it books? It's books!!" We opened it up and much to his dismay, it was not books, but rather 12 canisters of Parmesan cheese. He asked me for the box, so I took the cheese out and gave him the box. He walked over to the bookcase, grabbed as many books as he could hold, walked back over to the box and dropped the books in it.

    "There! That's better!"

He may turn out to be a bigger curriculum junkie than me!

That's so cute! I love how he improved the situation. :)

  12. So, who all has the the extremely talkative/extroverted kids? Wanna vent, share stories, or just know that you're not alone?

    ...

And the intense curiosity and pin-you-to-the-wall questions! I value an inquisitive mind. But I've been trying to train dd8 that if someone doesn't give you full information on the first or second question it probably means they really don't want to share it all with you. And YOU DON'T HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING!!! Honest!

Is this just normal for a talkative 8-year-old?

    Mama Anna

Yes! I have one, except she is 7 and an only child, so guess who is the main recipient of her verbal giftedness? :D
