  1. First, I think he needs to be much less OCD on a clean house! You start with the basics and add them as they get older!!

Basics: (when you have ANY children under 5)

    Kids are fed...

    Kids are clothed....

    Kids are bathed....

    Kids have some education...

    Vacuum..huh?

Extras: (when all your kids are over 5)

    Kids are fed well...

    Kids are in clean clothes...

Kids actually used shampoo during their bath time....

Kids completed 75% of their work....

Time for one load of laundry and kitchen sink is empty....

Vacuum once a week...toilets cleaned once a week...sheets changed monthly

Extra Extras: (when all your kids are above 10)

Kids helped clean dishes after each meal...

    Kids do their own laundry...

Kids use too much shampoo...need to set aside a new budget for it...

Kids completed 75% of their work without only 3 prompts...

Took kids to 8 events and other lessons...

Vacuum once a week....toilets cleaned when company comes over...sheets changed twice a month

Extra Extra Extras: (when all your kids are teenagers)

Kids start cooking 2 meals a week...

Kids don't need laundry...they just rewear them until they have time to wash something and throw it in with your load.

    Kids need gas money...

Kids get the stuff they need done for school...

Vacuum has lasted 7 years...finally seeing regular use....

Furniture polish is a welcomed scent...

    When it all gets better:

The floors are vacuumed daily, dishes are all tucked away in their spots...sheets are changed weekly, toilets are sparkling...smells amazingly clean and not a speck of dust anywhere...

just waiting for the kids to come visit from college...

Your dh needs to be reasonable..accept a clean house under the clutter...leave his temper at bay....get a grip...the goal is to love your children and teach them how to survive in this life...a clean house is a nice accent...but love, joy, grace are much more valuable....they will want to know a father who shared those rather than his obsession to have a perfect house.

I wish we had a LIKE button :001_smile:

    :iagree:

I think it's not just homeschooling that's hard - it's life with littles. Obviously, I'm echoing what others have said. You mentioned DH grew up in a very clean house; could it be he's passing along (totally unrealistic!) expectations or comments he's gotten from his parents/sister? I'm 9 years older than my brother, and our house growing up looked quite a bit different than mine now - but I spend every waking moment living in our home, along with a 6 yr old, a newly 4 yr old, and a 10 month old. "Tidy" is not a word that comes to mind.... If I don't greet my DH totally frazzled, I count that as a good day. :tongue_smilie:

They say with littles, the days are long, but the years are short. So true! Please don't focus so much on your imagined shortcomings as a homemaker that you don't notice the miracle and sweetness of the little people at your knee. You know they grow up in a blink...

    And :grouphug:

  2. :iagree:

I wish there was a book I could read, a system to put in place, or a ideally a magic wand. Reality is, I must work on me! Change starts there.

Thanks for the reminder, as we have had a very tough week, and I need to work on me first, now, today!

    Exactly this.

I've gotten a lot of good ideas from different resources (Hold on to to your Kids, Screamfree Parenting, Raising your Spirited Child).

I find things go best when *I* control my own emotions, do not let them push my buttons, pick my battles, ....and other clichés :tongue_smilie:

Consistency also helps, though is incredibly hard to implement, especially with multiple caregivers....

Thank you for this thread - very timely in our case. I needed a lot of reminders I've found here.

  3. I know this is an old thread, but we're considering moving to NE Ohio. No set location yet - near Akron? Mansfield? We need a relatively large medical facility, but are also aiming for the snow belt, some "country" acerage, and a decent commute. I keep reading about high crime and gangs, though... Any input from those actually living there (I've never even visited the area, so I have no idea what's truth, and what's legend)?

    Thank you!

  4. We have been using L'Art de Lire and loving it. It's perfect for elementary. I prefer to have the printed workbook rather than the downloads. If you order from a Canadian distributor rather than directly from Nallenart, then you shouldn't have any problems getting your order in a timely manner. :001_smile:

Thank you for suggesting this - any recommendations as far as a distributor?

    :)

  5. I also dislike the strange 'G' and 'Q' of American cursive.

Look at these two handwriting fonts: UlusalOkul.Com Çizgili and Schulschriften (traditional and simplified).

Full list of handwriting fonts, incl. French styles, here.

I feel like an idiot, but...

How do you use the (e.g. Schulschriften) fonts to make up handwriting pages? Tracing? Is there a way to make the lines go away?

  6. I'm a little nervous about it too, but the nallenart customer service worris me more. :D

We can each experiment with our respective choices and report back. :001_smile:

This is why I'm planning to download the first level, rather than waiting by the mailbox. :001_smile:

Where are you thinking of ordering Alex et Zoe from?

  7. I'm trying to decide between these two.

I know Alex et Zoe assumes the teacher speaks French - but at what level? We'd be starting with the first book. I took French in school :tongue_smilie: and can carry on a basic conversation. I am not fluent, though.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you!

  8. We're using BA as a supplement; DD is finishing up SM2B as the primary math. We do SM2B and an "extra" - CWP, IP, Miquon. She started with BA once a week, and has asked to move up to biweekly. :D She works at her own pace, stretching out the lesson as needed. We read the guide book, and then work through the problems as stamina allows. I think the way the practice book is written helps facilitate that approach somewhat.

I was leery of the comic book style, as I personally am not a fan (DD hasn't really read comics), but I agree - very engaging. I enjoy reading BA.

I also strongly agree that the guide book and practice book seem written to be used together - one builds on the other. There is undoubtedly additional teaching in the practice book.

We started with just 3A to see if it's a good fit, but we will definitely be continuing with BA.

  9. My littlest (10 months old) has some funky symptoms (involving what appear to be lymph nodes). Could be something quite serious, or could be nothing at all. Prayers that it's nothing would be greatly appreciated...we see his pediatrician Fri AM.

    Thank you...

    *update:

Thank you SO much for all the prayers!!! The general consensus is that they are reactive lymph nodes, and benign. Just going to keep an eye on it for now. This is what I was thinking, but a bunch of little things had me second guessing myself... I very much appreciate all the prayers!!!

  10. Praying for you. She sounds like a nutcase with too much time on her hands... In my own experience (as a mandated reporter), CPS is a very busy service - they generally have to pick their battles, and what you're describing doesn't sound like something to pursue IMHO... Crazy lady clearly doesn't have a 3 yr old at home - I call mine a "threenager" sometimes ;)

Praying you find a job perfect for you ASAP as well.

    :grouphug:

  11. Angela, we miss you!

Sincerely wishing for you that you are able to find the best possible solution for your family! :grouphug:

And a selfish question :blushing: - did you decide to take the literature list down, or am I just having trouble accessing it?

Hoping you're able to return soon...

  12. Yikes. I hear ya on that one! So we wouldn't be able to download the database to then use on HST+ and then reupload it onto HST Online? So basically, once we start using the online, we're stuck using it and can't transfer everything back to HST+?

You're going to use HST+ on your iPad? How? That's the only reason I've been considering HST Online, because I'm most likely going to be getting an iPad3 in June.

Yes, how are you using HST+ on your iPad? I just got the one month trial of the online version because I use HST to log in what we've done after the fact (not lesson planning ahead of time). It eats up a chunk of time to enter it all at the end of the week, and I would love to be able to enter it via iPad as each lesson happens....
