Yes! I'm sorry - I meant to say that we'll be using her other materials, and looking for additional sources to cover what isn't covered by her curriculum. :)

I'm afraid I already know the answer, based on search results and extensive Google'ing. But I have to ask in case I missed something.
DD is totally loving science again thanks to Ellen McHenry's Elements. Is there anything out there that compares?
It seems to be at exactly the right level for her, balancing fairly sophisticated information in a very readable and understandable way. She's eating it up and begging for more. This is a girl who did not do well with RSO, MPH, mostly living books on a given topic, nor (to some extent) with BFSU.
Just throwing it out there one more time :)

No worries about hijacking - thanks for the bump! ;)
I actually did PM Parrothead when I originally posted the question - she's up north of Bangor.
We visited in late Aug and really liked Portland :)

I've been contemplating this... Likely going for the microscope, but I'm not sure about the accessories.
Does anyone have any thoughts re: if its worth buying the whole shebang now to make use of the discount? My eldest is 8, and we have a cheap toy-quality microscope with some very basic supplies.

Thank you - that's pretty much what we've now been doing :). It's nice to feel like we're on the right path.

I agree completely regarding MPH (purchased in late 2011/early 2012- I'm not sure when it was revamped). Narrow range of topics, and the Higher Order Thinking Skills requires information that isn't presented elsewhere. I wanted to love it, but also found it very frustrating (even with a background in science).

Love these ideas - thank you.
And Ruth - you come up with such novel ways to teach! :)
-
Thank you, 8, for all your thoughts. Very helpful!
-
If I find something good, I'll be sure to let you know! :)

Chelli, I didn't realize that about W&R - that sounds like it would be a good fit! She really doesn't write much spontaneously, so while I certainly think a blog, etc, would be great for her to be able to just write, I don't feel like I could do without any instruction at all at this point.
Winter - that's a good thought! Any specific suggestions for such a book?
-
Thank you for the input!

A private blog is a great idea! She has a journal, but she's not really motivated to write on her own. The writing she has done on her own for fun - I haven't corrected.
By revision - I mean I'll ask if she thinks there would be a way to make a sentence read more clearly, or change a word that has been repeated in a sentence to a synonym, or perhaps add a sentence (or change its position) to make things flow more smoothly. I agree- I wouldn't have her rewrite the entire thing at this age!
-
Thank you both!
I forgot to say she did some DPE last year and we'll continue with it this year. I try to revise alongside her, but I know it's hard to revise one's own work.
She may grow into the revision part of it - I just want to help her to keep honing her skills.

DD8 likes to write (be it narration or creative writing), but doesn't love it. She's a voracious reader, and I think that's a big reason why she writes quite well, IMO. She loathes revision.
I've been trying to find something that would really help her blossom as a writer. We're halfway through WWE3- it's OK, but she doesn't get excited to do it or anything like that. BW Arrow she didn't like. We've done free writing a la No More I'm Done, using mentor texts. She likes the writing, fights the revision. (I wonder if maturity is a part of that - she just turned 8...)
We've done all of MCT Island and Grammar Town.
I have considered Killgallon and IEW, as well as Writing & Rhetoric.
Help?! Any other suggestions?
She seems to have the basics down - good sentence/paragraph construction, uses varied vocabulary, good voice, etc.
I just want to help her to continue to grow and improve without it being over head as far as age goes.
(& excuse the abysmal writing demonstrated by her teacher in this post - hurrying to type on my phone before my napping babe wakes ;) )
:)

So very happy for you and your kiddos that things are going well!
Thank you for updating :)

Thank you for the input - we have friends with a girl around DD's age, but she is a very strong writer who has been composing stories since kindergarten. Makes it a bit hard to put into perspective where our DD is at compared to peers...

Thank you so much! :)

Congratulations to your DS, and to you all!! Well done (obviously ;) )
:hurray:

Any thoughts? We're looking for a place to put down roots, and to raise out three littles (ages 8, 5, and 2). DH has a good job offer, but we're hearing mixed things about Bangor. Leaving this vague at this point, as to allow free commentary :)

I've been searching for "outside the box" ideas to incorporate into science. We're trying inquiry & discovery based learning this year.
This seems like a neat site, though I've only browsed, so I can't attest to how good (or not) it truly is :P
It does have lessons and web based tools that are searchable by topic/grade.

Thank you both for the info regarding the TM!
Is anyone considering skipping over book 1 and starting instead with book 2?
-
I haven't seen this question raised - would it be ridiculous to start with book 2? I am not getting a definitive picture from the samples, but it seems that it would be closer to what we'd be needing if we were to use these books.
ETA: if buying just the TM, are you simply reading to the student? Somehow I think I should just call it a day and look at this again when it's not so very close to midnight :P
I was initially thinking the oral parts were conducive to snuggle on the couch reading - with just the TM that might be tough...
Other than answers and dictation, is there anything else missing from the student text?
-
Thank you for all the input! :)
Ellen McHenry's Elements - anything at all like it?

Thank you - I looked at the elementary levels a few years ago; this is a good reminder to revisit Mr. Q.
