  1. I am sorry! Bad neighbors can definitely ruin an otherwise perfect home! My recommendation would be to fight crazy with crazy. Put up that orange fencing and stand back and admire it while loudly declaring how much the brilliant color “brightens the place up!” Be sure to adorn the newly installed fencing with plenty of “Birds Aren’t Real” signage, which should be clearly visible on neighbor's side. Show neighbor how concerned you are about his welfare by telling him each time he mows or weed-whacks that he shouldn’t be outdoors so often because the neighborhood bird spies are on high alert. Who knows? He might be just loony enough to take you seriously!

This is heartwrenching. I just can't comprehend how this can just keep on happening. It is so so so far from my reality. It's horrifying.

    Explain it to me.

Is it really truly the case that more of your population care about the right to own a gun than the right to safely go to school/shops/concerts/church? No.

Is it really truly the case that your lawmakers care more about votes than lives? Yes.

Why in the world aren't there restrictions on gun ownership? Because a handful of psychopaths have gerrymandered the $#*! out of this nation so that the voice of the majority cannot be heard.

I'm clearly missing something obvious. No, you’re not. America is going to hell in a hand basket.

  3. Dh and I got second boosters a couple weeks ago. Mine was a little over 6 months from the first booster. I had a not-quite-migraine-intensity headache for about 24 hours then it vanished. My arm was a tiny bit sore, but I think that was down to me tensing up. Dh had no side effects at all.

Eta: I got Moderna, Dh got Pfizer.

The problem is that my Rottweiler/Shepherd mix is a reactive dog.  She'd be growling, boofing quietly when she sees you coming and if you came too close it might escalate.  But we are working hard at it and she's much better with women than men!

Ah, well! Then I would just have to politely avert my eyes and keep my distance. But I’d still be carrying a pocket full of treats just in case she decided I was an okay human.

Also, I love the term “boofing.” It’s such an accurate description of that “I’m not putting any more energy into this bark than I absolutely have to” sound.

If I was in a crowd outdoors, I would mask.  But for my walks around the neighborhood with the dog I am not masking.  But I might pass one or two people on the entire walk and they always go to the other side of the street when they see my big dog.  😉

Yep. This is us too. When my knitting circle meets outdoors (about 10 of us), I don’t mask though, unless one of our two anti-vaxers is there. If the numbers keep getting worse- as I expect they will- I may rethink this.

But I wouldn’t cross the street if I saw you coming, Jean. I’d be the weirdo who would say, “Aww, what a pretty dog (because, ya know, all dogs are pretty dogs!). Can I say hello to him?”

  6. Oh, sweetie, you have had a terrible day! And I’m sorry about the accident on top of the whatever the heck bug it is you’re suffering from!

I do have a suggestion about the DMV. Have you looked into the DMV to go bus? You could explain the possible covid situation, and maybe they could come outside or meet you at the door to the bus for the transaction. I avoid the actual DMV building like, uh, well…..the plague😂, and have always had actually *nice* interactions with the folks on the bus.

(This post contains no actual data. Just my own sad musings. If you’re looking for actual data, scroll on!)

Ok, so someone correct me if my math is wrong here, but it has been projected that there will be 100 million cases in the coming year. If the charts in the link above are accurate wrt case fatality rate (1.2%), that works out to another 1.2 million deaths. Spread over a year, that works out to an average of over 3000 deaths per day. And yet, people are behaving as if nothing is out of the ordinary about that. I feel like people who are higher risk and still being cautious are being told to stop being such wimps about it. After all, the vulnerable are expendable, right? It just doesn’t sit right with me at all. It’s like being willing to get sick and/or risk getting others sick is some sort of psycho badge of honor.

But are hospitalizations and deaths going up based on this wave?  I'm having a hard time estimating risk.  Are these mild, asymptomatic, or serious cases?  Are the hospitals being overrun again or are people able to handle this variant fairly well (assuming vaccination or assuming vaccination plus one booster - or two)?

According to Johns Hopkins, the overall cases are up by 53%  and deaths are up by 15% in the past 14 days. I follow this data on the Guardian's website, because the actual Johns Hopkins site is so dreadfully slow to load, and locks up if you breathe too loudly. Despite its glitchy nature, I have found the  JH site to have the clearest and most comprehensive data available.

I had a second booster on Thursday since I'm going to visit my 93 year old mother.  She also had one last week.  My stupid lymph node puffed up to the size of a lemon, ugh,  but otherwise I feel ok.  I'm not really convinced it was the right thing to do since there seems to be a consensus that the fall wave will bring its own new vaccines, but I feel like I had to do everything possible to avoid bringing it to my mom.  We'll KN95 mask and take all the precautions but it's stressing me out.

Oh, man! I’m sorry about your response to the vaccine! My only side effects to boosters so far have been a day of feeling like I have been whacked upside the head with a frying pan, which I consider to be an acceptable trade-off.

So about multiple vaccines in a year…My mother (a nurse) worked for a while for an internist whose patients were mostly geriatric. He *always* gave his patients two influenza boosters per year, one in late summer, and one in late winter. His reasoning was that immunity does wane, and in the especially vulnerable (like the elderly) double-boosting should be routine. That may be the way we are heading with Covid.

I had to raid my sons dresser for this shirt to wear to work today.   My students love it when we do stuff like this.

I have to admit though that I have ever only watched one start wars movie …a recent one and I have no idea which one it was.

  11. This is intended as practical advice, and I hope I don’t come across as a bitter, old hag for saying it. I love music and dance and art! Dd was a dancer for 15 years. I still play the flute whenever the opportunity arises. BUT…Dh has a DMA in oboe performance from FREAKING EASTMAN, and he is working as a tech monkey at a college. I could understand if he were a pianist, violinist, or flutist, because there are so dang many of us. Heck, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a degreed flutist in my neck of the woods, but an OBOIST? How can there possibly be that many oboists out there, let alone conservatory trained oboists with DMAs? The degree, for which he took out more in loans than we owed on our mortgage, is absolutely meaningless, other than adding a couple of letters to his signature.  We live in a culture that is increasingly turning its back on the arts, and  I truly believe that jobs in the sector will sadly continue to dwindle.

Unless your dd has been attending a pro or pre-pro school, or is naturally another Zakharova, please encourage her to major in something else, and minor in dance. Fwiw, this is the decision dd made- much to our relief- without any of our input. She loved dance, but science has always come first, and she will be graduating with a BS in biology in 2.5 weeks.

is Covid Act Now pretty much useless now? It looks like they reworked their risk criteria so it's the same as the CDC community guidelines.

Yeah, I noticed this too, sadly. For a while, I was depending on their daily updates to determine what activities were “safer.” Numbers mean nothing when they come from the same people who are manipulating the numbers to make everything look better. 😔

May be an image of text that says 'Finally settling down to my vegan, gluten free, soy free, antibiotics free, raw, non GMO, organic, fat free, ow carb meal!'

True story: The convenience store in the town where we used to live had (as most of them do) a self serve drink machine with ice dispensers on both ends. One of the employees had made up signs and labeled the ice dispensers “Fat-free-ice” and “Low-carb-ice.” 😂

May the fourth be with you!

Has anyone experienced a production of a full orchestra playing while the Star Wars movie is being shown? It seems pretty cool.

No, but that sounds like it would be a ton of fun both to be in the audience and to be in the orchestra pit!

eta: When I was a very young flutist, I had a copy of the Return of the Jedi soundtrack on cassette. I played “Luke and Leia” (I liked playing along with the flutes at the very beginning) so much that the tape warped!
