  1. I'm thinking about Easy Grammar next year and using Writing Strands (I have book 3) for composition for my 6th grader. He used CLE in the past but I felt it had just too much repetition and overdid the amount of work. Does EIW have enough with only doing half a year of grammar and half of composition?  My son picks things up quite easy.  If you’ve used any of these, can you give me pro/cons?

  2. I have used both Abeka and CLE. I prefer Abeka for the younger years and CLE for the older ones. Abeka is 2 pages, colorful and gets the job done. It's very easy to use. I didn't care for the all the pronunciation marks that CLE has for those years. If it wasn't for that CLE would be fine for those years as well. Too much!!!. They got so confusing. I had used Abeka for years then tried CLE and finally I went back to Abeka. That being said...... Around 3rd grade I switched to CLE and really like it. I like that it is directed to the student, is spiral and everything is right there in the book, spelling included. I did use a different handwriting though. I am using EIW for LA now because CLE does get bogged down with so much marking that it can become overkill. I ended up crossing things out that my son was understanding. I found I needed less grammar and more composition. CLE is very thorough on grammar and I loved it for that.

  3. I can't find a Science curriculum I think we would actually get done or be excited about. I'm thinking about having a "Science box" which would be giving my son a certain amount of ime to pick out anything from the box to learn about and read on his own. He'll be 6th grade. My thought is that if he gets to choose then it would be more enjoyable and he would learn. This can include magazines, books, experiments etc. What are some ideas I can have already set aside for him to choose from. I'm trying to think outside the box to try to get Science done next year. Any ideas are welcome.

  4. That's pretty cool. I didn't know that. I was going to suggest Dover Historical Coloring books too. I usually peruse them on Amazon and purchase a few for whatever we are on. I have the WWI, WWII, several Native AMerican ones, Colonial Times, the Underground Railroad, ones on dress and uniforms from different time periods, etc.

This year we are in SOTW2, and while it has coloring pages, they are too youngish for my older kids. They do like above poster says and usually color in adult coloring books or work on crafts or their own sketches while I read aloud. But I did purchase the Dover on Vikings, Celts, Castle Life, and a few others for this year that we read through and look at the drawings and occasionally put color on for on those sections. They are very nice and more grown up for coloring for older kids.

Thank you! This will be great because my son will be in 6th grade 😊

  5. Don't know how it compares to the vol. 1-3 coloring pages in the activity guide, but it looks like you can purchase a separate pdf file of coloring pages specifically designed to go with SOTW 4.

The description says "These 42 exciting and accurate illustrations were created by artist Jeff West, whose work for Well-Trained Mind Press can be seen in... the revised editions of Story of the World, volumes 1 and 2."

    Thank you :)

  6. Does the activity guide have coloring pages? We've done the first 2 books then went off on my own this year. I'm thinking of going back for modern history because that's where we are at on the time line. My son liked doing the coloring pages as I read but I thought I ready there were no coloring pages in the 4th book. It might be a deal breaker. He'll be in 6th next year and trying figure out our plan for history. TIA

  7. DD is currently halfway through 6th.

    What is working so far:

    Bravewriter Faltering Ownership

    Singapore Math 6A and 6B

Time Travel Math (done in conjunction with DS)

    MCT Voyage level

CAP Writing & Rhetoric Level 5

Vincent's Starry Night and Other Stories for Art History/Appreciation

    Things we are struggling with:

    Science, History

Science and History is what I'm struggling with as well :)

  8. I'm on my 3rd 6th grader. What's worked for us:

    MEP 7 math

    TT

LLATL Tan (R&S English 5 has also worked for 6th grade but not the 6 book)

    Narrations and outlines for writing

    God's design science

    SOTW

    Logic lift-off

I did a search so that I could link more planning threads about 6th grade and for some reason I couldn't find any. Not sure why.

Thanks! I couldn't find anything either. I figured I just didn't know the correct words to search, haha

  9. I have previously used CLE for LA. I like the small increments and the fact that my child can be fairly independent with me there to help if needed. My issue is that I think it's overkill in the review and number of problems. I have a Writing Strands 3 book that I can use for writing but need something that covers the rest. He picks things up fairly easy so that's why I felt like CLE was just way too many problems and then I had to grade all of it. Any help would be appreciated. This is my last child to homeschool so I'm not needing anything to use for additional children. Thank you so much in advance :)

  10. I have a 5th grader who seems to be a natural speller. He's my last homeschooler so I only want to buy what is necessary since I won't have others who will use it after him. Should I stick with a formal Spelling program? I'll do it if necessary. Just wanting some outside thoughts since I have no one around to bounce things around with :) We used CLE last year and switching up LA this year.

  11. This is especially in the area of writing and composition but I would like suggestions for all areas because I'm not sure of my ability to school upper grades (6th and up). I have sent my older kids to the local jr high and high school but I might need to HS my younger ones longer and I don't think I can give them what they need to succeed. Can I get suggestions? Any programs that teach how to write and grade it also?

  12. What didn't work:

    Math u see

    Voyages in English

    Essentials in writing

    What worked and we loved:

    Mcruffy phonics and reading

    Story of the world

    BJU math

This year I used a lot of "in the middle" things that worked well enough but not loved.

Can you tell me why EIW didn't work?
