  1. My child is doing poorly and I'm at a loss. She continues to get so much wrong and doesn't remember the stuff we've been doing for months even years in some instances. We are currently doing CLE where is slowly adds steps of new stuff and continues to review. She just doesn't remember the stuff she learns. I'm at a loss. She is in 5th grade and doing CLE 400 books along with her younger brother. I sit with her and go over all the stuff she gets wrong so she will understand do better next time. Each day she gets so much wrong. It gets hard on her. It's getting worse as the work is getting harder. If we don't figure something out now it's only going to keep getting worse. Can I get some advice please?

  2. I have a 4th, 5th and 6th grader this year. I want to do American History but these are my youngest and don't want to spend a ton of money. I'd like a christian world view. I'd like something that isn't real teacher intensive. I plan to do it with all 3 but just don't want it to be the majority of our work. What is your opinion of Notgrass? Is there something better that you would recommend? I was going to try to wing it with reading books and just reading through The Light and the Glory but I think they will get bored with me just reading TL&G the whole year. I'm thinking I need more of a plan haha.

  3. Do you have a required number of school days you are required to go? Do you count them? I have always counted my days but am considering not counting this year and just doing school everyday knowing I'll have gotten in what I need to get in to reduced the stress a little. Not that it causes alot but just to help be more relaxed about school in general and not to feel like I have to do things like the public school. What do you do and what is your reasoning?

  4. I'd like to do US History for my kids next year. They will be in 4th 5th and 6th. I like christian perspective and I not much planning. Years ago I did Sonlight but sold all the books haha. Now I'm on my 2nd round of kids and need some ideas of what some good ones are. I'd like it to be budget friendly because I'll be done with homeschooling and won't need it any more. Any suggestions?

  5. I recently got a refurbished 7500 a few weeks ago. I love that it sits under the counter and so easy to wash. After many hours of research I decided I'd rather have the shorter under the cabinet model over preset settings. I knew I would be apt to use it more if I didn't have to put it together before using. It's right there ready :) The preset settings are just an amount of time. I'm usually cleaning up the ingredients while it's running anyway. I love mine and am finding more and more I can use it for. I've wanted one for years but didn't want to pay the price. Finally decided to spend my birthday money on it. I would do your research and decide what things are more important for you. It's different for different people. I just wanted to share my thoughts on making my decision because hearing others is what helped me. My sister had one for 10 years, sold it and got a 6300 from Costco. She said that the presets are nice but she doesn't need them. What ever direction you go, you won't be disappointed. You can google reconditioned vitamix and it'll pull up their site. They are much cheaper. Enjoy :)

  6. We've used Core F before & have used many SL IG's.

    Things I like:

The schedule, I use to be cool making my own up, but I reached a point where life is crazy & having that premade schedule means everyone keeps moving & there's no hours spent planning it all out each week.

I like that there's an included book list

I like that vocabulary is included.

I like that there are basic retention questions because I have a child who needs them when he reads on his own.

I like that it's easy to colour code my IG so I can see each thing at a quick glance.

    Things I don't like:

I don't like the way LA is in the new IGs. It means thicker IGs, higher prices, & excess pages per week. I might feel differently if we used SL LA, but we don't. It's nothing personal against SL that we choose not to use it. My children both have VPD/SSS & it effects what LA curriculum we do use.

The size of the NEW IGs. They are just big & cumbersome. I can bind up the old ones, but I just can't do that with the new ones very well.

Over all we enjoyed SL, but admittedly we moved to BkSk last year & I'm glad we did. I like the slower pace with a solid 4 day schedule. SL no longer has a solid 4 day schedule. Some things will still be scheduled on Day 5 {Bible & Reader}.. If you do choose to use the 5 day schedule the book for reading Aloud on Day 5 is ONLY read on that day..

Core F is pretty full on, & there are 6 full weeks spent on China alone with a lot crammed into the first 3 weeks. I'm referring to the newer IG, because that's what we used {2013} & in the end I totally revamped what we were doing & did a combination of SL & WP. WP became our spine & I added in the SL literature {scaled down slightly} to match up to the countries we studied. We covered more countries this way too.

SL's focus for this Core is only on the 10/40 window except they choose to include Australia.. With WP we covered so much more & were able to spend longer on some countries {if desired} then others. There is enough material to cover China, for instance, for an 4 weeks if you move at the pace in the guide.. It was also more hands on. SL does have some options for that, but most of what was up for offer in Core F was hands on in regards to research & writing. Again, something my VPD/SSS child couldn't cope with; It literally took him HOURS, someone who can skim could easily conquer it much quicker.

Having said all that, we did love the book selection {lit} that SL chose for all countries but Australia. Considering we live here we found their book choice poor & a rather limited view of the country. But then one would be partial wouldn't they? I'd check out the 3 week sample in depth.. print it out, really get a feel for the IG & the layout & see what you think. The first 3 weeks are really full so if you look that over & feel you can keep up with it then you'll be fine! :D

    What is BKSK?

  7. I think I'm going to try this Science. I'm only buying Our Planet Earth to see if we like it. What is needed? Do I need the Teacher's guide? Does the TG have worksheets and answers in it? What does it include. On RR there is also God's Design for Heaven and Earth worksheet book. Is this for all 3 of the Earth books? I've tried to look at samples but can't find much. Mostly only the table of contents. Thanks for any help :) I'm planning on using it for grades 3,4 & 5.

  8. I had a 3rd and 5th grader this past year.  My 3rd grader is on level and my 5th grader struggles with writing a bit. When I emailed they suggested starting at grade level, but I opted to put both kids in at the 3rd grade level. We skipped the grammar portions and did one writing lesson a day.  This year we will cover the 4th and possibly 5th grade levels (writing only).  I found that I didn't need to adapt the lessons at all to meet my 5th grader's needs.  The lessons themselves were review, but they taught her to better organize her thoughts and she definitely walked away with more experience and a more pleasing product.  I can't say this route would work well for all 5th graders, but for mine it was a good fit.  :)

Thank you :) Did you do the workbook also? I'm thinking I could get the 4th gr then. A little review wouldn't hurt. Was it worth it to only do the writing? That really is all I need. CLE is rigorous enough for LA and my son would be overwhelmed with both grammar.

  9. Maybe start with the writing included in CLE? We are happy with the writing until grade 6 or so. Then we supplement. My 7th grader is using Essentials in Writing because LA 700 doesn't include a lot of writing.

The reason I want to do EIW is I  need help teaching writing. I forgot to mention that. This is definitely my weakest area :) I thought about trying that with my 3rd and 4th graders but I want to be sure they know how to write.

  10. I am schooling a 3rd, 4th, and 5th grader this year. My 5th grader is coming from PS so he has had some writing.  My 3rd and 4th not so much. I am using CLE for LA. I think I should begin some writing instruction but don't know where to start. My 5th grader struggles with focus issues and school is work. Do I get level 4 or 5? The website doesn't give much info as to the differences between what the years cover. How advanced is the work? I'm debating whether to just focus on my 5th grader or let all 3 join in on the writing and do what they are capable. Some advice would be appreciated :)
