  1. I was wondering can LOF only be purchased on the authors website? Thanks!
  2. Susie, Thanks so much for your help!!! I'm really leaning towards using MOH for my older two dds (12 & 10), but have reservations that 7 yo (with some LDs) will be able to follow along, but we can just see how it goes! One more thing - did you purchase the LA game? Is it worth the $$? Please stay safe during Gustav- are there any flooding concerns where you are in MS? We were in Cape Hatteras years ago when Dennis hit. I have never seen SO much rain, wind and torrential (sp?) down pours! Take care of yourself!
  3. Ladies, Thanks so much for the ideas & encouragement. I'll keep plugging away at FLL & use the board/lab book ideas. A friend of mine who is a montessori teacher gave me this idea - Give dd index cards of different person, place, thing written on it. Have dd go find these items around the house, then go over what dd has brought back and explain why those items are nouns. She also suggested going together and finding differnt nouns - the family car, tree, flower, etc. Then give them their specific names - Honda Odyssey, Dogwood Tree, Black-Eyed Susan etc. She said dd can recite definition, but since it's still abstract make it concrete by having her pick/touch items. Anyway, just thought I'd share her idea. Thanks so much for your help, I'm eager to try this next week!
  4. Susie, I joined the yahoo group and did find files on both MOH & SOTW- thanks. Now, I just need to decide which one would be better to use alongside AWOA. I just had a few more questions :-) 1) Does AWOA have decent map work skills? 2) I am assuming you used all portions of AWOA- Did you dc use AWOA LA? If so, do you think it was enough or needed supplementation? My 5th grader uses Rod & Staff English and is a year ahead (shes using the 6th grade book this year), so I can slow her down & use AWOA LA 3 times a week & perhaps Rod & Staff English 2 times a week? Would adding LA make the AWOA "experience" more richer for dd? Does LA add a lot to the program? (hope this makes sense) 3)Seeing how you've already done AWOA, if you had to do it again and could add SOTW or MOH which one would you use? 4)What did you think of AWOA science was is "science light"? Did you supplement with any other curriculum or simply added more library books? Do you think it's sufficint for a 5th grader (sorry don't mean to put you on the spot!) thanks so much for answering my questions. It has been so helpful!
  5. Susie, Thanks os much for answering ALL my questions!! I'll have to look on the LA website to find the AWOA loop and see if we can mesh MOH & AWOA... One more thing, do you think my 7 yo (1st/2nd grader) can follow along? I was planning to just do SOTW with her (see my above post), but if AWOA is scripted and I'll like to do that with dc, so I may not have time to read SOTW with 7 yo... do you think it will be above her head? Perhaps I should mix SOTW w/AWOA? My mind is swirling with ideas... any thoughts? We loved Ancients & Middle Ages when we did it years ago; dc did a lot of hands-on crafts & feasts... they still remember our Celtic Feast and dh ripping the chicken leg off the bird (cooked of course) and throwing it on their plates and talking in a Celtic accent!! Ha - it was a hoot. Thanks so much for your help
  6. We are starting up our 4 year history rotation again. So, I need to find an Ancient history curriculum. Older dc (7th, 5th, 2nd, pre-k) have already read SOTW series the first time around. So, I was thinking of using MOH 1 along w/SOTW 1 CDs, and just SOTW w/2nd grader (pre-k'er listening in). Now, I've come across AWOA! 1) Can anyone tell me how they liked this program? Is it enough for 7th grader? We would use the bible, history, possible science w/5th grader (7th grader is already using Apologica Gen Sci). 2)Is it open & go? 3)Do I need the student pages if I'm not doing the LA portion? 4)My kids love to read, are there reading lists in the back of the TM to add more literature? 5)Can I mix MOH 1 w/AWOA- is there a list somewhere to do this??? that would be so helpful! 6)Anyone use ANWOA after AWOA? Is it just as good? I'm really trying to simplify homeschooling this year because my husband is very ill. So, if AWOA is anything like TOG, I can't use it right now... Thanks so much for any insight!
  7. Linda, Thanks for the post! No, I don't write the sentence on wb or paper. That's a great idea. Hadn't thought of it! Perhaps seeing it, would solidify the concept... dont' know why I hadn't thought of that! thanks.
  8. Thanks! Which IEW are you using? IEW TWSS or SWI or history based lessons? We are doing Ancients again, and I'm considering using IEW Ancient Based Writing lessons, but we haven't used IEW TWSS or SWI, I heard on this forum IEW Ancient Based WL could be using as a stand-alone even if dc hadn't used IEW before. Any thoughts?? Thanks again for your time...
  9. We started FLL 1/2 about 3 weeks ago and are lesson 23 in the grade 1 section. DD (7 yo, 2nd grade) can easily recite the definition of a noun, but when I ask her to name a noun (any noun), she can't do it and just guesses. Also, we've spent most of these lessons repeatedly talking about common & proper noun, but when I ask her the question, "In the sentence, The boy went to town is boy a common or proper noun?" She'll guess and sometimes be right, sometimes be wrong. Then I'll correct her and use the same sentence but with a proper noun added "John went to town", then asking if John is a common or proper noun, again she'll guess, usually getting it wrong. So again I go over the difference between a common & proper noun and why "boy" is cn & John is pn. I really feel after 3/4 weeks on this topic she should understand and be able to apply the definiton and previous lessons knowledge to not need to guess. I really don't think she's an auditiory learner (we use a great amount visuals/manipulatives when I teach her math). That's why I didn't use FLL 1/2 in 1st grade, because I thought it may be too hard for her. She has gone to speech therapy and she may had an auditory processing delay... Sorry to ramble, but my question is I'm really thinking we should use another program... I would love to hear any suggestions/ideas of other curriculums that you all have used successfully when FLL wasn't working. I really don't want to go on another month and be in the same place we are now... I knew dd wasn't auditory, but had FLL sitting on my shelf, so I decided to give it a try... help!! Thanks for your advice everyone!!! P.S we are already using All About Spelling book 1, writing is thru' history narrations/copy work, pathway readers & history readers. DD is reading fine! yeah!
  10. Judy, Thanks for the link. Have you used this book? Did your dc read thru' it and have good results (I'm assuming so!)
  11. My dd is going into 7th grade and last year finished the last book in SWO (I believe it's book H). This year for 7th what should she be doing for spelling? I was planning to order Vocabulary from the classical roots (A), but should she add anything else? She is a good/natural speller, but I would like to keep her sharp in spelling. Is spelling not necessary beyond elementary grades (if dc is a good speller)? Any recommendations would be great! thanks!
  12. Lori, Thanks so much for detailed info. It helps a lot. I was planning to use MOH 1 along with KF or Usborne Ancient World Encyclopedia. So, I could incorporated the outlining daily (we will be doing MOH 4 days/week). I believe map work & timeline are already scheduled in MOH. (I haven't ordered our copy yet!!) - thanks so much, I'm going to print your post out....
  13. Thank you all for your ideas. I had one more question- If you're using LL7 & Writeshop or IEW or other writing curriculum weekly, for history do you have your dc do any writing/narration/outlining? I guess I just don't know how much of dc day should be taken up with writing? Should history at 7th grade level be more reading and absorbing of facts or should she still be narrating? (my WTM book is lost! So I can't look this up!) Any thoughts would be of great help...!
  14. angela, Thanks for the post- you make a good point- I never thought of the writing aspect... thanks
  15. I just bought LL7 and was wondering, it has writing exercises for each lesson, but not a lot of instruction or guidance how to write. Should I add a writing curriculum to dd 7th grade workload? What do you all do? Do you also teach a seperate writing (IEW, Wordsmith etc)? Thanks for your help! Also how did you like LL7?
  16. Does each Megawords workbook get progressively harder? Where should a 7th grader who is a very good speller start start? Thanks!
  17. thanks! I think we'll try the CD... do you use anything else for vocabulary? (DD has already finished the SWO series)
  18. Thanks Sue, My dd is going into 5th (10 yo) and I feel that the Prentice Hall Science Explore Physics books will be too over-her-head. Any other suggestions for supplemental reading for her if I use EE? Thanks for your thoughts-
  19. Sue, So how does your dc like Exploration education? Are you supplementing with anything else? - thanks!
  20. Stacy, Thanks for the post! A few questions - C 1) Can this be re-used by younger sibling in a few years? Or do I have to re-buy the package? 2) Did your ds do narrations weekly or daily? (Just trying to get a feel for how you did it... thanks 3) Which Prentice Hall book did your 5th grader use? I was thinking of doing the same! I really don't want anything super academic, but want her to retain what she learns- I know she will learn it again in a few years. Thanks so much.
  21. I'm trying to find a semi-independent physical science curriculum for my 5th grader. I was wondering if anyone has used exploration education's intermediate program? Is it worth the $$? Is it thorough? Did it keep your dc's attention and what was your overall thought? Thanks so much!
  22. Hi all, My dd is starting 7th and I was going to get her Vocabulary from the Classical Roots A (as in WTM), then I saw the Word Roots CD in the Critical Thinking catalog. I was wondering if anyone prefers one over the other, do they teach the same things, which is more thorough? I think dd will enjoy the CD more (some thing different other than another workbook) but if VFTCR is better in what it teaches, then perhaps I should go with that. Also, I know VFTCR has 3 books(?), so if dd used the Word Roots CD this year and finiished it, would next year would she go and do VFTCR book B? Hope this makes sense! - THanks so much for any help!
  23. I've heard a lot about United Streaming, but don't know enough about it... Can someone tell me the details of it?? Does it offer video segments of various topics? Also, what is a typical yearly cost (how much of a savings is the Southwest co-op price?) Thanks for the info!
  24. Pongo, Sorry to sound confused, but.... can I view IEW TWSS then use Ancient History Based Writing Lessons instead of SWI B? Or do I need to first do SWI then Ancient History Based Writing Lessons? Thanks! Trisharog- Thanks! I may go ahead and buy the Ancient Lessons and look it over, it's just pricey with the TM & 2 student workbooks! - thanks again.
  25. thanks Fay, buying the syllabus only is a great idea. Also, can you tell me more about the e-book? Which one is this? I didn't see it in the Rainbow catalog... thanks!
