  1. Ok, I am in the "throws" of Webster's Blue Backed Speller. DS has the syllabary down except for G and C which we review. We are going to start Table 4....I hope I am doing this right. He gets about 75-80% right except some of the exceptions (c with a sound of s and doubling an e or doubling an s). Somehow I feel like I need to be teaching him some rules to go along with the spelling. Advice? Am I going too fast?

Am I on the right track? Elizabeth, do you consider 80-85% mastery? I saw on your site the spelling rules for Blend Phonics. Do you suggest I use that? He is 5.5. Tips?

  2. Today, my son took the Gesell test for private school admission at their half-day kindergarten. The tester did mention to me that I need to work on his comprehension. She said that I need to ask more questions while reading.

Currently, we are reading "The Children's Book of Values" (and discussing), Bible, "Peter Pan" (explaining and discussing), Dinosaur book (reading to him since it is an interest and listening to "Little Bear" and Beatrix Potter books in the car.

Do you have any suggestions on what I should do? I am new to all of this. I am just not sure what level of comprehension is acceptable for kindergarten readiness. Resources? Articles? Advice? BTW, the K is a Classical Christian school.

BTW, he does have a good background in letters (worked with letters from 2 on...he was the kid who would rather play with letters than blocks...did leapfrog DVDs....finished TYCR100 EZ lessons)

  4. I am interested in buying an e-reader. Somehow the thought of having all of my books in one place is REALLY appealing. I have heard great things about the Kindle BUT I love that the Nook Color includes pictures for children's books. Also the NEW tablet functions are appealing. Does the Nook Color bother your eyes? What are the pros and cons in your view? If you had it to do over, would you buy something different?

  5. Are you hungry on this plan? You mentioned that this is a very mental diet. I am guessing you may not be hungry but you may be emotionally hungry.:001_smile:Or maybe get bored and eat. I am just concerned that I will be completely controlled by this diet meaning...it will be all that I think about. Do you know what I mean? I was like that with the SB diet. I do not want to be living for meal time, but be able to live my life without it being a distraction.

  6. My son is a pretty good reader. We finished TYCR100 EZ lessons. We have worked on Webster's Syllabary (he really picked up this concept) and some of the spelling lists. He is almost 5.5. Somehow it is really bothering me to NOT have him read-aloud to me since we are just doing Webster's spelling lists. He is good at sounding out (a little d and b confusion). How much time should I have him read-aloud to me a day? Do you have any recommendations for me? I am a novice since this is my first kid :)BTW, ds will be attending a half-day Classical Christian kindergarten next year that is Phonics-based. They will either use Saxon phonics or SWR.

  7. My son is in half day pre-K. To encourage him to learn to read, I set up a sticker chart. At the end, he would get maybe a movie night or a toy from McDonald's ($1.50). This really helped him to visualize his progress (since he is a visual learner). Also I invited his favorite stuffed animal to be the "professor". Somehow when "Professor Puppy" corrects you it is not as hard as when mom corrects you. Also I would offer to do something that she likes after her lesson was over. Try to make the process of learning to read a challenge, adventure or just plain fun. Right now, we are reading chapter books for me to read-aloud to him. After we finish a chapter book, we watch a movie that relates to the book (Stuart Little, Peter Pan, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Velveteen Rabbit etc.) Hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck!

  8. Well, I thought this might be a great thread. Let's list healthy recipes so good that they are addictive. I will start it off:

Corn and black bean salsa or salad

1 can white shoe peg corn (rinsed)

    1 bunch green onions

    4 oz feta cheese

    2 tsp garlic salt

    1 can black beans (rinsed)

    1/4 c sugar (or substitute)

    1/4 c olive oil

    1/4 c apple cider vinegar

Mix everything together except the corn, green onions and cheese. Once the dressing is mixed well, add the rest of the stuff. it does taste better the longer it sits.

I am eating a bowl of this right! now. IT IS AMAZING! Also, it fills you up
