  1. here is the link to stop the thyroid madness' recommended labwork

for folate - you might want to do a mthf test.  (it's fairly common - estimates are 50% of the population has at  least one mutated gene. - it affects b12 and folate absorption and utilization.)

Thank you!  We are waiting for mthfr results.

  2. I just buy marinated mushrooms in a bulk container from the olive bar, when I buy the olives.  I serve them in a little bowl with the pickle & olive tray.  It's my lazy way out, but hey, all the other food takes a lot of time and effort to prepare. :)

  3. On a whim I checked my wishlist on Amazon & discovered a couple games were on considerable sale.  It said "Limited-Time Offer" underneath the item and when I highlighted it, it indicated it was for one week.  It wasn't all the games but a few and it ranged from 49% to 34% off.  Might want to take a look at games just in case you have a favorite you'd like to get for Christmas.  Hopefully your game will be cheaper than when you added it to your wish list!

Thank you for mentioning this!  I just checked the "saved" section of my cart, and a brainteaser game I've been eyeing is 44% off.  Merry Christmas to me!

  4. I'd also like to figure out a gluten free stuffing recipe because it's what I miss the most. I've tried rice and other whole grains as a sub but it's not the same without dried bread. I'm not convinced the rice bread I buy would be a good substitute either though.

Do you have a Trader Joe's near you?  They sell GF stuffing.  I made it last year and it turned out pretty good.

  5. People seem to be assuming the kids have a real choice here re whether they actually want to protest whatever this protest is about.  In practice, opting out is probably hard to do if the teachers are encouraging it and/or the majority of kids are participating.

My kid said "it probably depends on who your friends are" and that the teachers appeared either to not care, or to encourage the kids to go.

Kid opted to stay, probably due to highly appealing activity in ___ hour class.

  6. I absolutly hate driving in Seattle so I try to take the bus if at all possible. I almost never see kids on the bus and never see younger kids alone. I never see them waiting at the bus stops either. The only exception to this is the bus from the suburbs to UW in the summer.

Not saying they don't ride the bus, but the area where the protest was yesterday kids are not using it as their primary means of transportation.

Hm.  Drive past the Metro stops near my kid's school, just before or after school.  Hordes of kids at every stop, waiting for the bus or streaming off.  That is the main way kids who live 2+ miles from their MS/HS get to & from school every day.  You may see more kids on the bus/at the stops for MS/HS located in less residential areas, due to significant amounts of the 2 mile radius being taken up with businesses rather than homes, or at schools with district-wide draw (IB, STEM, etc.).

I see plenty of kids on downtown buses too.  Kids who attend a private school or a MS/HS across town often have to transfer through downtown.

Maybe your district provides yellow bus for MS/HS rather than relying on Metro?

  7. Yes I'm afraid I agree with you. I've actually tried to gently bring up the possibility that she may have more going on than her current diagnosis and mentioned possible bipolar. I tried to be very nonjudgmental about it and just told her I'm here for her if she needs help. She got very upset with me. She sees a therapist but I have the feeling she isn't being honest with her or her psychiatrist.

You didn't say if she is taking meds, but if she is, antidepressants can cause manic or hypomanic behavior in some people.  If this were to be the situation, could you call the psychiatrist to report behaviors/symptoms?  The dr wouldn't be able to tell you anything without your daughter's consent, but he/she would then be aware that something possibly med-related is going on.

  8. Had she been ill prior to the heart issue starting?

I had (have?) something similar, which came on after a bout of flu about six years ago.  I ended up with a holter monitor which showed the irregular beats, but the doctor said it wasn't anything significant.  Eventually it got better, but it seems to recur every time I get ill.  It has never been as bad as it was the first session.  I really thought my heart would stop then.  It was very scary.

I hope your dd can find out what is causing it, and that it will go away. :grouphug:

  9. I've been sick a long long time and constantly need new reading material. Nothing scary, gory, creepy, disturbing, depressing!

Loved Maeve Binchy. Also liked John Grisham.

Anything that's a light but good read.

    Because you said Maeve Binchy:

Flambards series by K. M. Peyton.  One of my favorites, which I have re-read multiple times from my late teens.

The Cazalet Chronicle (series) by Elizabeth Jane Howard.  It was actually a four book series for a long time; I just found out the fifth was recently published and it's waiting for me on my Kindle.  I found the first four engrossing.

Shell Seekers and Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher.

  10. I'm old enough that only boys got to take shop class.  Girls had to take Home Ec.  No exceptions.

Boys and girls could take shop at my school.  Very few girls took the class, and the teacher let only the boys use all of the power tools.  We girls could use only some of the most basic ones such as the jigsaw.  I think we even had to use the hand drill rather than the power drill.

My school had wood shop; I don't remember if there was metal shop.  I made a flat wooden mouse shape, and a wood box.  Probably some other things, but I don't remember.  I still have the box.

Home ec was for girls only.  Boys could take "Bachelor Living" class in high school.

My brother's school had wood shop and metal shop.  He took both, and made some useful stuff -- metal candleholders, a wooden display rack for souvenir spoons (remember those?), and a metal trowel with a wooden handle which we used for picking up after the dog lol.

  11. I asked them and they claimed none of the pharmacies are allowed to.  So then I said to the guy who did mine that I was bummed they won't do kids.  He said only once pharmacies were given clearance due to an epidemic and then for a month they were allowed to.

I don't know maybe it is a state thing.

Annoying. Next time I'll call around and ask.

Our whole family has gone to the pharmacy for flu shots the last couple of years, kids included.  Some pharmacies here advertise they do immunizations for age 3+. Yeah, maybe it's a state thing.

This year we have to wait till November 1, as (different insurance this year) insurance is having trouble getting it set up.  If I went now, I would get the vaccine for free but would have to submit for reimbursement for administration.  No thanks, I'll wait.
