  1. The Curly Girl book recommended by other wtm members really helped me deal with my daughters super thick wavy hair. My dd's hair was a mess. Her hair really was too big a job to take care of on her own without the proper products. She uses several products from Sally's Beauty Supply which has very reasonable prices. But the main things she uses are the As I Am Coconut Co-Wash and a very large plastic comb kept in the shower. She puts on the co-wash and then uses the comb to get out the knots. Now my dd's hair is gorgeous.

  2. Here is a great article.

The Myth of Religious Violence   by the author of this excellent book.

This is a very interesting article, thanks for posting. The title does not seem to reflect the article content well. What did you feel was important from this article that you wished to share with the group? I have a feeling that my reaction to this article is probably startlingly different from what you hoped and I would like to better understand your intentions. And I would love to know what a few other boardies think about this...

  3. I just don't understand - how do you keep everything from sticking horribly in stainless? How would you scramble an egg? Cook a pan of potatoes? Seems like it would all stick hard as a rock on the bottom of the pan to me. I really would like to know, I don't like having to re-buy teflon every year.  I do own stainless but I only use it for certain foods.

  4. Okay here's the somewat frivolous question: Do you have any opinion about the SAT vs. ACT as far as snob appeal goes?

My daughter is under the impression that the ACT is low brow in comparison to the SAT. (what can I say, she's 16). To me the ACT seems "exotic" as everyone takes the SAT in the area where I grew up.

  5. That is strange. Thanks for letting us know which Tech.

Yes, I also appreciate knowing which Tech. Let's name the names and talk about money!!!

I dropped my daughter off at a test prep center this morning for the first time to take a  practice SAT. $120 just to take the practice exam, with a $75 discount. The counselor there interviewed me about my daughter and her goals. The counselor is surprised that I don't have any private colleges on our wish list, Guess I might have to come up with a few, but I have run the net price calculators and I'm just not interested in spending $60k for undergraduate especially since my daughter wants graduate school as well.

  6. The problem with this share is that people (here, on Facebook, in person life) are going to get upset at CPS and the Police. CPS and the Police were simply doing their jobs, which for this link included following up on stupid, intrusive, and obnoxious uses of "the system."

This link keeps showing up in my feed:

Child playing outside, neighbor calls police and CPS

Joanne if CPS and the Police were "simply doing their jobs" in this situation then what they have been directed to do on their jobs is evil. Pure evil. Why don't parents and children have any rights in this situation? That family could be psychologically damaged for years.

  7. Found this old thread while searching through old posts. This thread meant so much to me that I want to give it a bump for newbies. This was the thread where I finally really got it about college costs. This was a hard lesson to learn, but it needed to happen and I am so thankful to you ladies who were kind enough to talk about money in public.

  8. Because He loved us enough to give us free will, rather than make us mindless automatons or puppets who would simply act in a way that He "wanted" without any understanding of what we were doing. He loved us enough to make us in His image, to give us freedom.

He gave us the freedom to sin and he knew we would sin. He knew ahead of time that he would eject us from Eden. He is omnipotent. Explain why a loving God would do this?

  9. Forgive me, but I'm not sure what you're asking. The EOC affirms God's omnipotence. The point I was trying to (perhaps ineffectively) make is that the EOC also affirms His love.

Why would a loving God knowingly create beings that would sin and that he knew he would then have to eject from the Garden of Eden?

  10. St. John Chrysostom's commentary on the scriptures is, well I don't know how else to say it except "huge" in the EOC.  And it is so beautiful how he helps us understand and the love in the creation story, God's love.  He talks about how God tried so hard to give Adam and Eve one simple rule to obey, to lead them as gently as possible into obedience.  He gave them paradise, filled with, among other things, abundant food, and asked them only that they not eat the fruit from one particular tree.  Easy!  Such an EASY rule to follow, right?  God wasn't trying to make things difficult for them or set them up for failure, He was trying to make obedience as effortless as possible.  That shift in perspective was revolutionary for me.  I had been raised to think of God as this big powerful mean parent who had set a trap for his children so that he could punish them.  But the truth of the story is the opposite:  He is a loving and gentle parent who tried to teach His children to follow Him by giving them the easiest first step imaginable.

The thing I don't understand about this is that God is omnipotent. He knows everything that has happened or will ever happen. He knows all the past and all the future. So he knew Eve would sin. How is that explained by EOC?

  11. Although...then we run into, "What is friendly chatter?" Are Duggar-related topics just friendly chatter? What's to stop them from spiraling down? Is asking for advice for a friend whose DH has left their religion and wants the wife to do so too friendly chatter, or is it debate-board-worthy? I mean, if we can ruin topics like crockpots and shopping carts (or buggies), where will the line of demarcation be?

I think the examples you have listed, if you have been on this board for even a year, are clearly ones that are known to be controversial. But being able to move threads to the Rumpus Room would solve the problem.

  12. I agree. Occasionally I get the impression that some people are just itching to practice their debate skills or something, they will come into a thread that is moving along swimmingly and turn it in a controversial direction.

The debate skill that offends me is when debaters will not respond to factual refutations of their assertions. Ignoring the valid points made by your opponents at a high school debate is an effective tactic, but is not helpful here.

  13.

And here is another issue:  are some purposefully instigating or are they naive in assuming that the community is like-minded?  It is hard for me to assume the best of intentions for posters who return to controversial subjects repeatedly--but not for open minded discussion.

I believe that posters are sincerely trying to persuade the community to consider the facts they are presenting.

Take for example vaccination. The anti-vaccine posters will present their experiences, opinions and facts. The pro-vaccine posters will present their experiences, opinions and facts.

The community is left to decide which side has made the more valid points. If this kind of discussion is removed from a classical education board that would be a real loss. These are the great debates, this is how we join the great conversation.
