  1. I had MOH but to me it didn't seem to flow.[/u] Then there is doing history TWTM way but I am not sure I can incorporate enough Biblical history to satisfy me.

We love MOH here. Which volume did you use? To me, volume I isn't her best work. I thought the flow was fine, but there wasn't as much to it as volume II and III though. I think she either has or is in the process of making a new volume I edition for this reason.

We do not make the cards, as she suggests. We saw it as busy work. Instead, we focused on literature that corresponds to the time period and a good timeline (both on paper and in our heads). I also add in some reports along the way.

It may not be for you, but if you can borrow a volume II to peek at, it might help.

  2. If you go to the Veritas Website, you can see a sample of the Omnibus book and it has the whole book there for you to peruse. I sat there one night and read and read, enthralled with it. I am beyond excited about Omnibus, I have been reading, reading, reading because it is so interesting. This is coming from a non-history girl without nearly enough literature background :tongue_smilie: You should check out Omnibus, it is very thought-provoking material. I will use it alongside MOH with my DD starting ----next week :D

Here is a link to the sample of OB I, they also have the other levels too.

  3. I would continue and complete MOH 3 & 4, which will give her a full cycle.

You can easily have History daily and get through all of the books by 9th grade. The other option is continue one book/grade, have a refresher course on ancients during the summer before 10th, and have her go right into the 2nd course for MFW for 10th.

Edited to Add: You could even have her re-read MOH I in her spare time over the summer before 10th? Just a thought.

  4. So you got O2? Cool! I didn't realize you had decided and gotten it yet. Have you looked at the writing assignments? By the time you do those and the (very detailed) MOH2 reading, are you sure she needs more? What you might do is use the DK book *selectively*. Pick out one 2-page spread for her to read, outline, and write up each week on a topic that supports what O2 has you covering. Don't duplicate the MOH2 content but rather make it an ancillary topic, kwim? That way they all complement, rather than duplicating.

I did get it. I found it used on classifieds and got it for a great price :D

I haven't detailed it yet or read the writing assignments.

I was wondering too - can we outline MOH or is it too narrative? It isn't really narrative like SOTW is, but more than an encyclopedia. Then, we aren't throwing another resource into the mix. Things that make you go hmmmm..... :001_huh:

  5. yes, I agree. BJU doesn't seem teacher intensive to me either. it seems rather open & go. i own Level 4 and plan to use it next year. this is one of the reasons i was drawn to it actually, as my current curriculum seems like a lot of work....i want something more complete and simple.

Whew, I am not a slacker afterall :tongue_smilie: I could never find the time to go through all of the pre-work in the TM with three different levels.

  6. Just fwiw, Borders has Definitive for 10 bucks now--it's huge, beautiful, and engaging! Look in the Bargain Books section.

Chris, I tried to PM you but your box is full.

Did you use SWB's outlining suggestions along with Omnibus. Is that too much? Is that much outlining even necessary  My head is spinning.

I have been absorbed in the OB II book. I have been reading and reading since I got it in. Wow, what a great book :001_smile:

  7. YEah, I just checked online too and my search brought up a dog encylopedia. LOL. I just sent an e-mail to my mom to see if she can find it in the near future. They're wedding planning, so maybe they'll be near a store and take a peak. For ten bucks, that's one heck of a deal! I'd settle for a store 40 minutes away, closest one to me is probably 5500 miles.:tongue_smilie:

    5500 miles...makes my 40 minutes seem like nothing. :D

  8. wow, it's times like this I wish we had book stores here, the big American ones anyway. Is this the book?

Yes, that is it, but Borders online doesn't have it for $10, not that I can see. The closest Borders to me is about 40 minutes. I may call later and see if they have it in the Bargain section though :)

  9. That's funny -- my experience was totally different. Because the BJU worktext is so large and well-designed, my daughter was able to use it totally independently. She would just read the lesson (which was right there in the worktext) and dig right in. We never used the teacher's manuals at all.

I don't doubt that other people have different experiences, but BJU English was a grab-and-go curriculum for us.

This is how we use it. I am glad to hear that someone else uses it this way. My kids do the lesson on their own, almost every lesson is understandable to them from the Workbook. If I correct their work and find that they didn't understand it, we go back through the lesson together and the I have them complete the extra practice sheets.

  10. Ditto it not being a 5th grade book, mercy. Didn't even think to mention that, since the op's dd is older than that.

How to find LoriD posts? Well that's not hard. You set aside some time on a Friday night (or a Monday, hehe), go to Search and click Advanced search. At that point you can enter a poster's name and keywords. So just play around with it. One evening I read her posts on history, another on science. It's a different way to read the boards, and you learn a TON by seeing one person's progression in thought. It works best if they fit you or your situation obviously. So find someone you click with and read their posts horizontally like that.

Yes, I think it is meant for older kids. My DD will be 7th in the Fall and she has a very advanced reading level.

Thanks for the tips on getting LoriD posts. :001_smile:

  11. My vote is for Lively Latin. I researched several curricula and settled on this one because it is virtually self-directed/independent, has video lessons with the creator of the curriculum, and is FUN! I am learning right along with my 9 yo son. Very student AND mom friendly. : )

Would you recommend Lively Latin for a 7th grader or is it too elementary? (not to hijack, sorry)

  12. Oh, have you become a LoriD fan yet? She has some posts on how to schedule GB that are really good! She mentioned in one how she balances the lit and history and science to keep it all practical. Basically she says to do lit every day but history 2 days a week, science 2 days a week.

I haven't discovered LoriD yet. I am just getting me feet wet here. I need to look her up :D Thanks

  13. Oh Elizabeth, I don't know whether to laugh or cry :tongue_smilie: I usually just stay in my little comfort zone and now I remember why...once I branch out, I just can't decide and I feel so overwhelmed.

DD will listen to MOH along with us, and she is using OB for literature that coordinates with History...I was thinking of adding outlining from a primary source as an addition to OB and listening in on MOH. Is that too much - where is the smiley that slaps it's head? :glare:

  14. Well I can definitely see why they recommend it! It has a ton of content and is a huge step up in depth and detail from the other history encyclopedias recommended for lower ages. I really don't think you can go wrong with it, if you're looking for that sort of thing.

Thank You, what a big help.

Do you think it would be friendly to SWB's outlining plan for the logic stage?

Sorry for so many questions. I have had it in my cart and can't decide :tongue_smilie:
