Whoa! I've been asking dh to get me one for Christmas. I need to go tell him to buy it right now! :leaving:

I don't really think he was saying that musicians practice in that way, he was just pointing out that they do a lot of repetition. The point of the post is really just what you said - there's something new being brought to the table every time one repeats something.
-
I love following this blog and thought I'd share this latest post about how practice can be more than mere mindless repetition.

We did Redwall before LotR and we haven't done Harry Potter yet. I'm sure he'll enjoy them. They're fun! :)

I would like to spend more time listening to some of the podcasts on ancient faith radio, but there. are. so. many! I get overwhelmed every time I start to try and browse.
So I thought I'd ask you all what your favorites are. Any and all topics are ok.
Go!

Will be praying for her. Thanks for letting us know!

We cast our votes, so to speak, by saying things the way we like to say them.
Ah. But if that's the case why bother spending time with things like vocabulary and grammar? Why not just use words the way we feel like using them and be rid of the rules altogether? (Ok. Starting to feel a panic attack coming on. Deep breath. Deep breath.)

Has it always been a verb and I'm just late to the party? Why can't we just use the word "give" in its various forms? No offense intended to anyone who uses gift as a verb but it really makes me feel like doing this :willy_nilly: :banghead:
That's all. :)

Oh, and Matins is one of my favorite services. I'm always sad when I have to miss it. In fact, I am very excited for tomorrow because Sunday school is starting again and since it's held during Matins I get to attend with just the baby - as long as he's quiet I can have uninterrupted time in church
As a side note - I think Matins is the perfect Sunday school. All the theology and teachings of the Church are in the hymns we sing each week.

Since it's an Antiochian parish they'll most likely have available a service book to follow along in (probably a reddish/maroon color if it's the one published by the archdiocese). But that does depend on the size of the parish and their resources. If it's a small and newer parish they may very well not have those particular service books yet, but there should be something to follow along with.

I don't have personal experience but I've heard only good things about the Classical Learning Resource Center from some of the people on the Orthodox Classical HSing Yahoo group.

My experience is essentially the same as O6. I have a hard time justifying making ds attend SS when he strongly dislikes it and when I feel that there is almost no benefit for him. I'd rather have him present at Matins. But due to various dynamics in our parish that's not always an "acceptable" option. Fortunately all the girls love SS and are happy to go. If our SS were to add to and support what we do at home in a real way I would support it 100%!

Some things I'd want to pass on:
*Waiting a bit longer to start any kind of school is ok. A child who starts K level things at age 6 will be just as ok as the one who started at 4 (maybe even better off for having had those extra 2 pressure-free years, but it's all so very INDIVIDUAL. Each mother knows her own child best and is the best person to decide whether he is ready).
*Actual school work =/= sitting at a desk. Movement and interaction are good things, even when learning how to read and write!
*a child can comprehend way beyond his reading ability. So read aloud often and read books that have beautiful language.

I'm going to be throwing that siggie quote around in my head I can tell! In my experience, the two (dead men alive and bad men good) are both a part of the process of "righteousness." One doesn't happen without the other, which is probably why I'm having a hard time understanding the separation in EO theology.
I wonder if the separation you're noticing is a result of the difference in the understanding of Original Sin in the East and West. (I'm not sure that's it, just tossing that out there as a possibility).
Words like atonement and justification are actually hard for me to understand because I have no background with them at all. I get it all mixed up. If I could keep it all straight I'd probably be much more help! :)

Caitilin said what I wanted to say, only better. :)

I would love to read along with you all, but I don't have the money to buy just now. It's definitely a book that looks discussion-worthy. Debbi do you think it would be ok to be part of the email group even though I'm not reading just now so that I could sort of participate after the fact, once I get my hands on the book? I don't know if that infringes on people's privacy of I am receiving emails and not much contributing to the conversation...

So sorry. ((((Hugs))))

I am just finishing a book called The MELT Method (here's a link with some info) and the author mentions foam rolling in there. The point she makes is that for something that's supposed to be beneficial to your body it shouldn't have to hurt so much. Pain is the body's signal to stop. Not trying to dissuade anyone from foam rolling if you're sure it's a good thing for you, but just throwing it out there that if it hurts that much maybe there are other things to try....
