If you have used CLE's Learning to Read . . .
podoba01 replied to podoba01's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thank you so much for the advice. I would love to do the flash cards because it would be easier, but it's my daughter who balks at the idea. Do you know if the phrases written in the TM in a way that I can duplicate this in Quizlet?- 7 replies

If you have used this program, I have a couple of questions. Is it possible to do this program without purchasing the flash cards? Does the teacher manual list what words the cards say or would I have to purchase them to know this information? My daughter really seems to hate flash cards, so I might enter the flash cards on an online program like Quizlet instead. As an alternative, I might just make "cards" for the words that she finds difficult. Do you add the language arts 100 level with the Learning to Read program or the regular reading program? I can't tell from looking at their website when to start the LA. Thank you so much for your help! Sherry

Questions about using Omnibus for self-education
podoba01 replied to podoba01's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it. I think my family will worry less about me if I stick to writing out my answers, but they probably wouldn't be surprised to find me talking to myself  Sherry -
I have a few questions for those of you who have used Omnibus: Are the reading assignments written in such a way that I could use another edition of the book or a kindle version of the book without any problems? I am considering signing up for the self-paced Omnibus courses to add to what I am learning. Do you think the textbook alone adds enough, or do you think the courses would be worth the extra expense? The online samples are very tempting. Has anyone worked through these textbooks for self-education? If so, do you have any general advice? Thank you very much for any advice. Sherry

Hi, Starting next week I will be working with high school students at an alternative charter school for at-risk students. I will be working one-on-one with a student who probably reads at about a 5th or 6th grade level. The program has asked me to think of a warm up game to start the reading session, bring an article or book of interest to the student, and work through the reading material with the student, helping with unfamiliar words, comprehension, and fluency. The program doesn't have a set curriculum to follow. I need to come up with some games. The only game I can think of is scrabble. Does anyone else have any ideas--books, online resources, android apps, etc.? Does anyone have any advice on how to help with fluency and comprehension? I have a five-year-old daughter, so I haven't had to address these reading issues yet with her. This program is just starting, so I can't ask an experienced tutor for advice. Thanks! Sherry

Have you tried the homeschool planner that is free through Mardel? http://homeschool.mardel.com/Intro Maybe it will work for you.

Thanks for the fast reply. I looked at it before, and it just didn't interest me at the time, but I will take another look. I appreciate the information about the TG for Singapore. That will save me some money.

Hi, I started Rightstart math with my 4yo this fall, but it didn't really seem to click for either of us. We didn't get very far with it, but I think I will keep the math games book & cards to add some drill to the mix later. I really wanted it to work, sigh. Let the math curriculum merry-go-round begin :bored: I think my daughter might prefer more of a workbook approach. I am considering Singapore Earlybirds (Standards Edition), but I am wondering if I can do without the teacher's guide (about $100 for the year), or do the guides add a lot of help that I would miss? I am also considering playing with miquon as well. Would this be too much or too confusing to do both at the same time? Has anyone used both of these programs either together or separately? Is the a steep learning curve with Miquon for someone who loves math but only gets it after someone demonstrates how to do it?
