  1. I think they have a TT 4 out now....not completely sure about that....4 would probably be more like 3rd grade....we are using TT6 to bride the gap between finishing Calvert 5 a month or so ago until we start bju 6 in the fall. I felt like we needed a good review. Math is a weak spot for us. It is working well and is fairly painless.
  2. Ours only teaches from the end of September until the 1st week of May. That is almost 5 months off for Summer!!! Also, she only teaches on Wednesday and Thursday. I can pick just about any time slot so that is nice. On Thursday morning, we have a homeschool gym class from 10 to 12. I opted to schedule our piano time at 8 am on Thurday before gym. I fairly certain nothing will happen schoolwise that morning for gym so we might as well go to piano. Man, I hate Thurday mornings but then at least I'm not blowing another day with it. Do you think you could schedule your lessons up against the science classes? I think it is my personality but I find that if something interrupts my schoolday schedule then it throws me off. Good luck and know that you aren't the only one!!:001_smile: Dawn
  3. wal-mart? are some brands better than others? I have an almost 11 yr. old dd that i've been thinking of trying this on. She weigh about 80 lbs. What would be the correct amount to start with for her? dawn
  4. ok, i won't bump again...i just want everyone that responded to know how much i appreciated their help...
  5. The easiest would be a big pot of Jasmine rice. Fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce...easy and can fill with ingredients that you are able to find. I fill with lettuce, shrimp, sometime pork, shredded carrot, julienned jicama(sometimes), cilantro and vermicelli noodles. The rice paper wrap thingies are usually easy to find nowadays. Just dampen them and fill and wrap. maybe fruit kabobs with tropical fruit such as mango, pineapple, papaya, star fruit, etc...
  6. I don't think I've ever had so many responses. Thanks to all of you. I read through all very carefully and am taking all to heart. Sasharon, I think you may be right about basic math. I'm planning on reviewing basic math this summer. We are going to work on cementing the facts. Thank you. Michelle T., I have considered a LD many times. She does seem to frequently make mistakes. Teaching this child to read was a nightmare but somehow it all started to kick in about third grade. She still often seems to misread or not follow directions correctly. She has struggled with spelling but we are finally improving. The handwriting is just downright scary...lol. I'm having difficulty improving that. Do you think I should have her tested? Who does the testing? Would it make any difference? Thanks so much. SBP, you face icon really showed EXACTLY how I was feeling when I wrote the post. Thanks for the response and support. Sue G. in PA, Thanks very much for the link. We have used the graph paper in the past and that does help a lot. Thanks for reminding me. Reya, Thanks for the response and I will look into the math programs you suggested. Kidlovingmama, Yes, she is very bored. I'm not sure that is the only issue or not but she is always bored with anything school related. Because of this, I think she does as little as possible and does it as quickly as possible. I wish she were more motivated to really dig in and try to understand what she is doing. Thank you for your response. Angie in Tx, thanks for the great link. I will try that this week. Camibami, thanks for your response and support. Good luck with your plan. Let us know how it goes. amary, yes, I understand the brain fog. That could very well be part of it. Although, she has always been like this...lol. About BJU, I have been using Calvert all these years. I'm sick to death of it and burnt out. I just started my 2 younger kids on BJU homesat. It is going very well other thank doing a bit of tweaking to shorten day for my 8 yr. old. I'm planning on starting this child on bju homesat in the fall. I'm hoping to help her become more independent and also lighten my load. I'm not completely commited to doing all bju but right now this is what i'm planning. Peela, thank you for responding. Some thing to think about. thanks again. Isa, I think you make be right about working on those basic facts. That is going to be the goal this summer to really cement those basic facts. Thanks you for the excellent post. ok, I think I cover everyone. Again, all these post were very helpful. I can't thank you enough. I was feeling so frustrated and alone when I posted. I'm feeling better know and like I can make a plan to move forward. Dawn
  7. ok, I know that is a loaded question. Maybe I'm just venting because i'm feeling so frustrated. Please feel free to give advice or opinions. She has done Calvert Math up until about a month ago. We started TT 6 to bridge the gap until we start BJU 6 in the fall. This should be a good thing because it looks like TT 6 is mostly review of what we have done previously. She makes sooooooooo many mistakes when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. I'm talking about the multi digit types of problems that involve more steps. The long division is about to put me right of the edge. She is always forgetting the steps in the long division and just mostly silly error in the others. Is this normal at this age? Just more practice needed? Or something really wrong? ok, I feel a little better. Thanks for listening. Dawn
  8. it is by jesse wise and sarah harrington, i think....you can find it at peace hill press....
  9. If you are on this board then you have probably heard of it. It doesn't have the little lines and marks...lol. I personally think that looks confusing. OPG has worked well for us. It is quick and to the point, no fluff. It is dry and boring but we can handle that if we just spend about 15 minutes a day on it. That does seem to be enough. I do use ETC with it but you certainly wouldn't need to. I also use lots of the little readers such as bob books. HTH Dawn
  10. I've seen those and like the way they look. I'm not really sure how I would use them. I've been spring cleaning and organizing, too. It really feels good, doesn't it? Dawn
  11. i found all of your responses very helpful...I think I probably will take some of the classes and do them myself....that will cut down and I really don't think we will lose much content....The videos really do seem to be fairly rich and he does like them but at the end of the day it is a bit much to do all of it....I decided to do this to help ease the burden of teaching 3. Some days I just felt I couldn't get it all done. It is been helpful in many ways. One of my problems with just about everything is I always think I have to do everything to the letter, kwim? I'm kinda an all or none sort of person. gotta let this go a bit. thanks dawn
  12. this is helpful...gosh, i kept thinking end of 2nd and i thought that looked awfully hard for end of 2nd...lol....i really love how opgtr cuts out the fluff and just gets the job done....thanks again dawn
  13. At what point would you consider an end of K reading level? At what point would a child be well prepared to start 1st grade reading wise? I think I heard here that the end of the book would be an end of 2nd grade level? Is this correct? Thank you.. dawn
  14. We are into our 2nd month of using bju video lessons. He really tries to have good attitude and the work seems appropriate. But after Reading, English, Handwriting, Spelling, Math, Bible, and then either Science or Heritage Studies, he is pretty pooped out. Then he still needs to read for a bit independently or aloud to me and piano practice. Is this too much? I wonder if I should cut some out. The Spelling includes journaling once a week. Then correction of that. Would this be good to cut. Also, at the end of most Science lesson there is a journaling. He can write his own or copy the video teacher's. This seems to be a bit time consuming. This seems to be another place to cut. But then I wonder, does he need this extra writing beyond the writing that takes place in English? Ok, I'll quite rambling now. I think I needed to just write this out? Any thoughts or advise out there? Thank you.
  15. i'm completely shocked....this board always knows the answers!!!!....anybody?....i know you are out there!!!!....lol
  16. we just hatched a few chicks...now we think we are super talented...ok, i know it we aren't but hatching our own birdies sounds really cool...i couldn't find any info about this online but i did find that you can order fertilized parrot eggs....has anyone hatched and raised parakeets, parrots, or something of that nature?....thanks for any thoughts on this....
  17. riding bikes or scooters, drawing on driveway or wooden playset with chalk, jumping rope or tying each other up with jump rope
  18. I've just started this on hard drive. I think if she actually hooked up the satellite(sp?) and recorded that it would be to time consuming. You can get all lessons on dvd or hard drive. I am using the k5 and 2nd. I'm finding that I'm still busy with school stuff simply because I need to prep each day by getting supplies, manipulatives, etc. ready and organized for each day. Also, each day lasts awhile by the time all classes are finished. My k5er really doesn't need any help during lessons. My 2nd grader requires more of my time. He needs me to explain directions to him again and such. I also sit with him during english for writing lessons or he gets lost. So honestly, if she needs to simplify in a big way then I would go with the ACE or CLE suggestion. good luck. dawn
