  1. The link for the Master Books is the DVD set only.

What you linked from Rainbow Resource description says : "Ask Dr. Callahan Algebra DVD Set w/ Printed Teacher Guide, Tests, Syllabus"

The RR resource set is from the original printing of Jacob's Algebra, it was OOP for a while.  Now it's been re-released with a new cover and  perhaps they are marketing the supplements differently.

  2. This is where you as the teacher need to adjust the curriculum to suit the needs/level of your child.  It is a lot of reading, my children were not great readers so when we had a TOG week like that I would choose to a) cut the reading assignment down and only assign questions that were covered in what I assigned, b) do some of the reading together, c) do the reading over two weeks.  Sometimes we just listened to SOTW.

TOG will give you all the pages from your book that covers that week's topic, the assignments are not always evenly distributed.  TOG is a buffet, so choose what is appropriate and move on to the next topic.

Have fun with TOG, enjoy the ancients and do what works and leave the rest behind without guilt.  You will cover this time period again so don't worry about gaps.

    I hope this helps.

  3. I still check in on occasion but I don't post anymore.  I started on the boards in 2001, I was Monique in NJ. I remember all of you ladies!  I have graduated one dd ,who just got engaged last week, and still have 4 more to go!  I have 8 more years of homeschooling left.

ETA:  Yes, Cami I am tired!  I am caring for my in-laws on top of schooling.  I am finding being in the sandwich generation a bit exhausting!

I am so thankful to SWB for all of her hard work!  I had the opportunity to worship at Peace Hill Chapel many years ago, the Bauer/Wise family and their congregation were so very warm and welcoming to our family. It was a day we will never forget

  4. I love it. I've taught all five of my children with it and I've never been sorry. I think the best thing about it is it's so simple to use. If I want to add more to it it's easy to get readers or letters to use to suppliment. I don't think teaching reading should be complicated or expensive.

  5. Not exactly a library sale, but a school near me has a annual used book sale fundraiser. This year I found nine volumes ofThe Young Folks' Shelf of Books for $9 and all four of Churchill's History of the English Speaking People for $8.

  6. Most reception halls in my area charge upwards of $70 a plate for weddings. If you want really fancy we are talking $125/ person. I've been shocked elaborate weddings we've attended lately. Most places have a reception coordinator.

I would've liked someone that wasn't family to keep things running smoothly at my wedding. We even forgot to sign the marriage certificate and we paid overtime fees for the limos.

  7. Sorry to be so late to reply.  We were on vacation.

In the past, I have let TOG lead me.  With 5 children I always felt that I was "chasing a train down the tracks".  The curriculum became my master and I was always feeling behind or that I was not doing enough.  I never started the year feeling that way, but I just couldn't keep up the pace.  We have also had many challenging years as we now live with my in-laws and help with their care.  This summer was spent helping mil recover from surgery so we are just getting started and I am planning only 6 weeks of school at a time.

So, what I am doing. First, let me say that I have a very large home library so I am trying to use what I have here.   I want to be literature centered not history centered, so we are walking at our own pace through history.  For my younger children we are doing Story of the World and CC Timeline cards and song together.  Each child has his/her own book to read for history, and we will pull books from our shelves.

We are going to do a Narnia study together, so literature will primarily be related to Narnia and secondarily to history (we are studying Middle ages/ Medieval).  There is a lot of overlap into TOG Y2, so I may pull from it at times but only from the first 2 units and only as a reference and I have many TOG books.  There are probably more changes for my High School student that I won't go into here since I see your children are younger.

My focus will be on building skills, we will read more since some of my children don't love reading, I will read aloud more, we will be writing lots more, and we will be strengthening our math and grammar skills.

I think more than anything, I am trying to be centered in Christ, to be at peace.  Phil 4:8 is my verse for the year, we will think on those things.  The souls of my children are the first priority and I will meet with them face to face and we will walk this journey together.  We will stop and think deeply about fewer things, we will find the joy and beauty in learning.  I will not let my school be led by anyone's schedule.  I will trust the Holy Spirit to lead me as I teach my children.  This intentional focus is the biggest change for me.

  8. The Amish families that I've met in PA ( we buy from Amish farms) all send their children to small Amish schools. Pathway readers and Rod and Staff books are used in many Amush schools.

One woman I knew was as much in awe of how I managed to homeschool as I was in awe of how she managed her farm, housework and children.

  9. My original post was written two years ago, and here I am in the same place.  Trying to plan for my school year and finding myself getting sucked into over planning, over reaching, feeling defeated before I've started.

But,  I am more aware and today I put those binders back on the shelf and refocus on the good, the simple, the beautiful.

  10. My father was just diagnosed with Parkinson's too. This thread is scaring me. I'm glad it's here but I'm not ready to face this. MIL is recovering from major cancer surgery and I'm caring for her.

It's certainly been a challenging summer.

  11. I have used all three books mentioned. I agree with what everyone said about the fonts in 100EZ lessons. It was confusing and dd had trouble reading it.

Phonics Pathways worked well for us and since OPGR was not published yet, it was the best choice at the time.

When OPGR was published I began using it and all these many years later, I'm still using it. I am teaching my youngest to read.

Here are some of the reasons I like it the best.

    - It teaches phonics to a 4th grade level. It is a complete and thorough program

    - Additional readers are not required. There is a story or at least reading practice in each lesson.

    - It is helpfully scripted for those who have not taught phonics before and the script is easily skipped/scanned by a more confident teacher.

    - it is easily adapted to different learning styles, and has lots of opportunity to review concepts.

The only con is that some of my children didn't like reading from the book. So I adapted my lessons so that they were handwritten or typed out. This was a pro for some kids as we made up our own books, drew pictures, and did copy work from the lessons.

  12. I just discovered chalk markers. I used them to make signs for dd's graduation party. They are not cheap although I just googled and found some way cheaper than what I paid.

They wash right off with water. I really like chalkboard better, I may be painting some walls in chalkboard this summer and get rid my dry erase board.
