  1. I am currently using Zoology I with my DS9 & 11 and all is well. DS9 seems to hold his own with the info., and really enjoys it.

My first thoughts when I looked at the book, was how would anyone younger be able to understand this?? LOL But, like another poster stated...it depends on the child. I personally think that the older, the better :)

  2. Unless you spend $10 for the test prep booklet. That would solve the dilemma.

FWIW, Pennsylvania's homeschool laws -- and their uneven application -- are the Number One Reason why my husband and I are SCARED to move across the river to PA. We could certainly save money in taxes, but I get heart palpitations just thinking about it. :svengo: To have to submit a Reading Log, telling the world what we read in our own home.... to have to submit all those records, all those test results, portfolios, evaluations... to have to submit our school to their "perusal," as you put it, I would feel violated.

Now THAT is what I think is unethical -- for the State, I mean Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to be that intrusive.

    :iagree:

I am soooooo glad to be homeschooling in N.J.!

  3. I laughed when I saw this post because this was SOOOO us today. I woke up late...the kids got up really late...and of course it was raining and 40 some-odd degrees this morning....ugh, forget about it!

We usually start school at 9 ish....well, today it was 12 ish. We did a few subjects as it was working out terribly...and called it a day.

    Oh well

  4. The remark was inappropriate, but I don't see why you would want to talk with a manager about it. Why would you want to get someone in trouble like that? You've already given the drive-through lady something to think about when you mentioned homeschooling. Isn't that enough?

    :iagree:

She was ignorant and I don't think telling on her would have made a difference.

  5. We used T4L last spring for 5th grade. My son really liked the math at first....but got sick of the animation. It was really nice to have someone else (so what if it was "Dan the Anchorman!") explain the new concepts.

The only thing I didn't like was that they assumed you knew things already. If you didn't or couldn't remember something...you were out of luck. Also, if you wanted to review something....you'd have to watch it all over again (not always...there are points where they ask if you understand and if you would like to watch again...but not if you were finished). I often took notes to avoid this. :(

We also had some problems with the program getting "stuck" and then we didn't receive credit for a few sections we did complete (including the quizzes). This was no big deal...I knew they were done...but it really bothered my son.

There are worksheets to back-up the videos...if that wasn't enough you could definitely find more on some free sites.

    HTH :)

  6. Many years ago when my son was leaving public school I was told that he could receive services through the public school.

I was not happy with their speech therapists and he was in private therapy so I did not pursue it.

My son was in PS until last June. He had speech therapy from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. I just don't know if it would be worth the hassle to try and "reinstate" it with our homeschooling status (and all of the budget cuts this year...). Like you, we weren't thrilled with the results.....so I think I am going to contact my insurance and go from there.

  7. We will be first time users of OM4 and OM6 this fall. I also had a major freak about the Language Arts section. I was afraid it would be too much to handle with 2 kids.....so I looked around and even ordered Growing with Grammar, Easy Grammar and LLATL. I thought they needed something more independent....but I just couldn't find anything that meshed with OM. - it seemed to take away from the program (just too different, I think). It seemed to take away from it. So they all went back....and we are going pure OM this fall.

I felt we should at least give it a whirl....if over time it isn't working...then supplement :)

  8. Here is a secular list:

Personally, we love the Apologia Elementary Sciences. To make it suitable for us to use, I took a black marker and marked through the religious content, editing all the preachy stuff out of the text...some pages are entirely blacked out, most just have a sentence here or there. lol! The rest of the information is accurate and the book is gorgeous.

Although, we are much more tolerant than most people ;)

I loved those books too...but I was afraid I would have to disregard too much material....so much for reselling that book, huh?? ;)
